  • A couple of days ago I was decided to take my Jeep Cherokee XJ for along (4 hours ) trip to Orlando Florida and on my way pass by Lazy Springs Recreational Park to have some fun with the Jeep. Unfortunately, the Jeep started acting up 30 minutes after leaving my house: The steering became unpredictable, pushing to the left side of the road, so I decided to come back home and take my other car instead. On my way back home the Jeep became even worse and It started to overheat for the first time in one year of ownership. The temperature went up to 250f and then back to 210f and it kept doing that for the next15 minutes. Very strange!

    First ,before you change any sensor. Check the coolant level and see how fast it heats up after starting at idle. Run your blower if the air coming out heats up fast and temp is high even with full radiator. Check fans and thermostat .

    Welcome to jeep ownership. You are always going to have to fix something on it. Quit complaining and just fix it. In your case pay someone to fix it.most jeep owners such as myself take pride in fixing our jeeps ourselves, coast less and you actually learn more about your jeep. Instead of just handing it off to someone to fix it for you.

      I've been dealing with fixing cars since I was little with my dad, I am not afraid of fixing stuff by myself, even less when is my second vehicle. But if a frined can give me hand and do the job faster toguether I'll take it.

    never spend a single dollar replacing a part, until you have verified the part is bad. there are millions of internet experts who cant diagnose a no start on a lawnmower, but always have a simple fix remedy for your vehicle. start reading jeep forums, and download a shop manual for your specific vehicle. Then, start buying some tools instead of useless pretty bolt on crap. Floor jack, bottle jack, 2 jack stands and a dvom are a good start.

    the pulling is either a locked caliper or your steering knuckle where the brake pad rides is ground down and not releasing the pad (happened to my xj) so check those and the coolant temp sensor may be on its way out or you have air in the system

    I think it’s your thermostat not opening properly. When you change it keep the original and test it by putting it boiling water and see if it opens up like it should

    I have a 2000 Cherokee and I had the same problem with my temp gage. It would randomly shoot up to 260 and back to 210, it only lasted about five minutes and solved itself. I haven’t had any problem with it since. I’m assuming yours is a problem with the sensor.
    Also nice headlights, I have the same ones 😂

      It could be air in the coolant line. Burp your coolant system and check the thermostat.

    Overheating is a common issue in the XJs. The XJ was originally built to have a 2.5 inline 4, so when they stuck the 4.0 inline 6, they had to make the radiator smaller to fit. Change your temp sensor and replace your radiator with a three row.

    • @russellh22a
      @russellh22a 5 лет назад

      escozx2 no the common issue is that xj owners especially new ones don’t maintain their cooling system. My xj cooling system is all updated. Stays below 210 or at 210 even at 100+ degrees days

    • @escozx2
      @escozx2 5 лет назад

      @@russellh22a I have an 01 XJ, with hood lovers, a high flow water pump and thermostat, fan relay switch, a 3 row radiator, coolant filter, and I run flushes every season, and I still see over 210 temps during summer months. I live in Vegas so temps get up to 115 during the hot season. Any other time I'm about 180-190. Those precats certainly don't help either.

    Yup that's a sign that the coolant temp sensor is going out, easy fix though and located right on the thermostat housing. Also common for calipers to seize if they are the originals. Go to orileys and you you can get an entire brand new caliper for $25 after core exchange.

    • @VehicleTribe
      @VehicleTribe  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! these calipers are not the originals though, I replaced the originals couple of months after buying the jeep. I'll take a look and see what's going one.

    the same thing happend to my 2001 xj , just took it apart and cleaned the areas the pads slide on with a wirebrush and put just a small amount of high temp grease , the temp you should check the heatercore mine was all clogged and the coolant was rusty water , mine did the same it went to full overheat and then down to normal .. im guessing a airpocket and when it overheated it sucked the air out , ive got a vented radiator cap with like a little tab you can lift so it realeases the pressure to the expantiontank so it helpes to get out bubbles ( check the hose to the expansiontank mine was clogged) a new termostat and a rinse ( check chrisfix video on cooling flush) now my jeep runs like normal :D keep up the good work greatings from Sweden !

    My 99 pulled to the left just like yours. The rim, caliper and hub were also too hot to touch. I replaced the unit bearing and caliper and the problem stopped. No advice on the overheating issue.

  • @danhambrick6331
    @danhambrick6331 5 лет назад +2

    I would put a new coolant temp sensor on it for the cooling issue.The pulling issue could be the brake caliper sticking on the drivers side.Good luck...
