Possibly the most clear concise explanation of a simple, moving animatic I have seen. I have not touched After Effects in years. You make it seem like I can just jump back into it with a little practice. Wonderful. Thank you so much.
Thank you! Coming back to AE after years away. Not just a great quick run-through on producing an animatic, but lots of really useful by-the-way tips and reminders on good workflow and shortcuts as well. Also, nice overview of how to make compelling choices in an animatic without going overboard.
this was a very good explanation, I always had difficulties with editing programs thanks to the intimidating interface but your video made me want to learn more and lose some of my fear, thank you!
Thanks Todd! I’d suggest doing a few of the inbuilt after effects tutorials. While this video covers some basics it’s it’s more focussed on process and how to approach it. I’ll definitely try and fill this gap later with smaller videos though.
I'm new to After Effects and this video was very helpful!!! I went ahead and made some timestamps for ease of access, maybe other people will find them useful too! 00:00 - what an animatic is 00:40 - putting frames into photoshop 02:33 - why he names the files like he does (interesting!) 03:19 - creating a composition in After Effects (general set up) 03:40 - importing the psds & moving to timeline (double clicking is a shortcut) 04:50 - lining up frames w/audio 05:20 - retiming audio 05:45 - adding more time to timeline 05:55 - adjusting and panning timeline 06:07 - changing/trimming work area 06:13 - adjusting layer ends 06:19 - how to move & trim frames (alt+[ and alt+] trims beginning & end of frame to playhead. [ and ] will align frame with playhead) 06:51 - adding fade (t pulls up opacity prop.) 07:08 - adding solid layer 07:41 - crossfade between 2 frames 08:00 - remember to save!! (saving for first time (ctrl+s) & increment and save (ctrl+alt+shift+s)) 08:33 - going over animatic (space is shortcut for play) 09:10 - adding detail, back to photoshop! (Using lasso tool to separate foreground from bg) 09:43 - converting to layered comp in After Effects (for me it’s located in the dropdown “Create”) 10:40 - fixing holes in bg, back in photoshop (lasso and content-aware fill) 11:34 - crossfading slowly 12:05 - final product
