The D was theorised to be a half-moon some time ago. But if it stands for Dawn or Dusk (not literally, but figuratively), the letter D can also be perceived as a sunrise or sunset if u try (horizontally).
One reason that I couldn't fully get behind the other 'Dawn' theories was because of a lack of connection to Oda's IRL story and his OP story. I've found that any story worth reading has some significances to the authors IRL story. Another issue with this is that there are many characters with very strong convictions that aren’t Ds, like Zoro or Doflamingo.
I think buggy lost his way after shanks didn’t go for the one piece and recently buggy finally got his conviction back. So he can still be a D. And also I don’t think you need to be a D for a strong conviction

I haven't finished your video yet, but I would argue that Garp demonstrated some wavering will when he was faced with Ace's execution. At that time he was faced with conflicting allegiances. He stood in front of Luffy as he stormed the platform but ultimately allowed Luffy to punch him and pass. His love and loyalty to family couldn't allow him to do his Marine duty as layed out to him by his superior officers. Something that has come up elsewhere in the story with Garp. I think in the final saga there will be allies to Luffy within the government itself that will act as aids to the dawn of a new age. Garp, Aokiji, and definitely Koby come to mind. Helmeppo might turn on Koby but maybe not. Ok back to the video lol.
I apologize if this is a known fact, but I haven't read that anyone mentions it anywhere. You have the drum sound at the end of almost every episode in the anime. It sounds every time the "to be continued" panel is shown. yes that "dong" sound. So it's extremely important. And what personally surprised me the most was that I figured it out on my own about 20 episodes back with Ace and Yamato.
What if it isnt Don but Daiko? The drums that we hear every time a character enters the scene are the chū-daiko, but there are many other drums similar to it, like the shime-daiko or the performance using drums Kumi-daiko. The Daiko (or taiko) was originally used to hype the troops and intimidate the enemy. Luffy's heart beat is referred to as the drums of liberation by zunishia and the beating of the heart (aka the drums) is what brought luffy to life and defeated kaido. What if the D refers to the beat of one's heart, it would be very romantic if the whole idea was that each of the characters with a D in their name, their heart beats represent the drums that instill fear in the gods. Each of them making a different sound, so it wouldn't necessarily mean that they have to be ether good or bad, just that they are rebels at war. It would also be quit fitting to the fact that they pull people together, people around them can't help to follow the beat of the drum. Maybe they are the clan the originally rebelled against Imu and got wiped out, but survived the erasing and their descendants, just by the fact of being born are rebelling. People can hear the voice of all things, and certain animals can only speak in such voice, maybe their hearts beat in such a way that produce a sound unnoticed by most that affects them subconsciously. The fact that you can read the names like you are reading different types of drums also would be a wordplay that fits the Oda style. Monkey Daiko, Marshall Daiko, Rocks Daiko, Gol Daiko, etc... .
I was so excited when I was half way through the anime and learned that people with the middle initial of D have so much importance. My middle initial is D so it's a great day to be a One Piece fan
I think the "D" represents either "Desire" because the definition of desire implies a strong feeling of an impulse toward the attainment or possession of something. And considering the fact that they are all driven to find the One Piece Treasure and become the Pirate King, "Desire" would definitely correlate. However, it could also stand for "Discipline". Afterall, they're all Pirates (Navy) or Marines. And "Discipline" is a core belief and/or value amongst anyone enlisted in the Armed Forces. But, again, this is just my theory... Thx...
good one! since the will of D/ inherited will is constantly mentioned in the story, it makes sense that each of the families in the D clan hold a certain desire( monkey's desire, gol desire etc..that could be literally anything )which collectively with the rest of the desires will overtake the current world government. kinda cool!
I like this theory. It made a lot of sense. I also thought the name D related to Gear 5th. My conclusion was "Doki" from doki-doki which means the heart beating fast in Japanese. Also, luffy has a big X on his chest. In a pirate map, usually the treasure is marked with X. So I thought that might be the clue Oda left to show something important. But like always, I bet Oda will come up with his own unpredictable twist.
I also like this! It won't be dawn as this is Japanese, and Oda wouldn't have used an English word to drive the whole theme. ドン is possible but stretching pretty far. ドキ can actually make sense for everything the video mentioned. The drive by your heart.
I actually love this idea..... If it's not this I have a personal theory that is there's almost 2 meanings in 1. D symbolizes Destiny to bring the Dawn or Dusk of a new era I dont remember listening to this video before but i must have as i have a comment already
The will of D. stand for "defiance", think about it.. all the members of the D that we've seen throughout the story have been the most defiant characters to the world government and the celestial dragons, saul didn't want to be part of the marines because he realised the corruption within, garp doesn't like the celestial dragons and rejected the position of admiral for that reason especially, roger and luffy are an obvious case, although I don't understand why roger and garp would defend the CD's against xebec, and then finally we have dragon who is quite literally inspired from chee gevara and is a revolutionary.
I found your video super interesting. I had to go back and re watch some moments where I remember seeing the word "Don". I started to noticed in each moment where there is a final "win" situation for Luffy, you can find that word in several places. For example, in the fishman saga, at the end when Luffy is destroying the Noah ship, you can find several fishmans wearing t-shirts with "Don Don" wording on them. The interesting part is that they were shearing as a symbol of "liberation". I won't spoils a treasure hunt for others, there are multiple moments in which the scenario is similar in other sagas and the word Don appears in random places when the "liberation" (Win moment) is happening. :D
I can't believe you mentioned Franky and ships but forgot one of the most important members of the D. Clan: Thousan D. Sunny. Seriously the sunny is constantly doing D. stuff. Like one thing all the D.s have in common is they defy both fate and the plans of all one pieces villains. Remember when the sunny survived the whitestrom, completely bypassing Blackbeard's ambush and popping up right at the shore of punk hazard? Also it's made from the Adam tree, a tree that remained standing after several wars and served as the point around which the local villagers would gather for safety. Plus oda keeps confirming that inanimate objects can have wills and spirits. I swear the sunny carries the will of d.
I am gonna be bawling when One Piece comes to an end. I don't think I will ever be ready for it. Imo, it's the greatest anime of all time, it's a historic peace of art and story telling that rivals the greatest works out there in existence and has been paving the way for anime for years.
@PrinceOfAllAnime my theory of the D clan is, two words Dawn/Defiance. The C.D. use the word defiance to label them, while Joyboy took those words as the Dawn of freedom.
First. I love this. Don't know if I've actually heard somebody suggest this one. And it's as good or better than any other theory on the matter. Subbed. I always think of 2 things. 1. What "D" words does Oda keep using as themes in the story or which connect the members we know about 2. Did Oda even mean for it to be an English word? Mostly 1 though. So here's my list in alphabetical order. I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones though. Dawn Defiance Denial Desire Destiny Devil Different, Built Dreams To the second point, I'm still on the fence. "D" could stand for nothing. Like Homer J Simson's middle name being "Jay". Could be a fun gag. OR it could be a pictogram for a rising sun (rotated 90 degrees) or a half moon. Or it could symbolize incompleteness. The circle is missing it's other half.
@@SunDogGodi like the half moon analogy even though I personally think the D actually stands for a word. There's LOTS of crescent moons in one piece scattered everywhere. I'm a little surprised there aren't many theories about moons. And not just direct crescent moon drawings but also stuff that could look like a crescent moon. Like the iconic whale tree at Fishman island. And also, noon ties in w the fact that both Brooke and G5 Luffy were shown doing the Nika pose in front of a full moon. I get that its the Sun god fruit, but if there's CELESTIAL dragons, SUN God Nika, and obv, and the ancient weapons, then it only makes sense for there to be a moon *something*
Id like to point out one more thing, I think the reason Blackbeard is a false D. is that he's willing to bow down to anyone if it will serve his own ends. All the other D.s, even when faced with death, refuse to bow to anyone. Blackbeard on the other hand started his entire journey bowing to Whitebeard, who specifically called him a false D. while knowing what a true D. is.
An interesting tidbit on this note is, if you go back and watch the end of Luffy’s fight with Croc, you’ll notice that the “drums of liberation” play. Croc even comments on hearing it
maybe D stands for "drums" as in liberation -- or the "doldrums" even, which is the intertropical convergence zone. the calm belt around the grandline could be symbolic in some way
Honestly I always thought the whole D. Thing was supposed to be Destiny. Basically the whole point of the One Piece is to exact this destiny. To fulfill the Destiny of D. By bringing down the nobles, the world government and give true freedom to the people. And the One Piece is likely going to be the truth of the past and how that truth of how to destroy the world (metaphorically).
fatinating, and whn you started to talk about drums and then mentioned master builder, Tom, it made me think of something....and had to look this up. something I recalled from growing up. There is a type of drumb, that has no snare, called a tomtom, and thin even called a tom drum. Got thinking that after you mentioned the drum references and then mentioned Tom himself.
what if the real meaning of D is Divine?? i search the meaning of divine and it says " of, from, or like God or a God." then what if Roger's "Divine" Departures technique is also a hint meaning of the D?
idk i think determination is a good one if you think about it cuz each of the d clan members were all determined to accomplish their goals like how luffy is determined to be pirate king or like how rouge was determined to keep ace safe when the marines where looking for roger's son i have more examples but cant fit all in one if you're interested in them reply and ask for them
13:33 minutes in and all i can think is what if teach got his main goal and plans to obtain power by doing it the same way someone in the past had done it. Maybe someone like rocks?
The D could also stand for DAUNTLESS, cause Silvers Rayleigh said in the Human Shop on Sabaody, that a Hat like this fits a dauntless man like you ( to Luffy )
Before watching the video, I want to say i've always believed D stood for Drum. There's a lot of reasons I believe this, but the thing that convinces me most, is Gol D Roger called Gold Roger could become Gold Rum Roger, the three most important things to a pirate. Gold, rum, and their jolly roger. Edit: after watching the video, I still feel strongly that drum is correct. Learning about the D and blackbeard and Ace on drum island, luffy in a drum barrel early on breaking out with a don, Luffy destroying usopps snow queen while his snowman had a drum barrel hat. At wano the drums of liberation bringing the dawn. I could go on but it just fits everywhere to me and this video still has some truth to it, the drum clan doing things with a don.
I think you are absolutely right. The D means drums. Nika has drums around his hips. There is the Drum Island with Dr. Hiruluk speech. Drums are related to songs, which includes Bink's Sake. Drums were used in wars, right? To motivate the soldiers. What else?
To me, the D could be as simple as one of the most quintessential aspects of One Piece…. Dreams. Protagonists, heroes, antagonists, villains-- it doesn’t matter! One Piece is, to its core, a manga about pursuing your dreams, and that is whether you’re Chopper, or Kaido. Even the villains have dreams, and if you’ll notice, the people that are actively partaking in the world changing are all members of the will of D. whilst those without the moniker tend to assume a more passive role. Maybe it’s something like the members of the D clan’s dreams having the potential to revolutionize the world
I think the D in Initial D stands for Deja vu I've just been in this place before Higher on the street And I know it's my time to go Calling you and the search is mystery Standing on my feet It's so hard when I try to be me uoooh! Deja vu I've just been in this time before Higher on the beat And I know it's my place to go Calling you and the search is mystery Standing on my feet It's so hard when I try to be me yeah!
i just heard something actually dope about one piece. So there was a monk in bhuddism who was called Devadatta. He could put souls into fruits. its also written that he is actually the devil. So devil fruits are made up by this Devadatta story. And its also possible that The D in Monkey D Luffy stands for Devadatta. so people think Luffy could be a relative to the devil. if thats not a fire lore, what is.
Maybe The D reflect their personality. Some with the Will to carry other Dreams, some that would bring the drums of liberation. And some that would bring the darkness to destroy..
I guess my sister is a D clan member since her middle name is Dawn. XD She also shares a birthday with Jinbe, LOL! But yeah srsly good theory. I also like "Drum" theory being another possibility.
Luffy could be the dawn of the beginning and Teech/Blackbeard is Dusk of the end, possibly everyone is seperated into what name they get, im just gonna write this cause I dont wanna write too much.
I keep hearing pride, pride, self, self, more pride and more self. Those are the words that stand out the most. Oh, and the word will. So…..pride in self-will

Doki would be cool
I also like this! It won't be dawn as this is Japanese, and Oda wouldn't have used an English word to drive the whole theme. ドン is possible but stretching pretty far. ドキ can actually make sense for everything the video mentioned. The drive by your heart.
tom literally says live your life with a DON!@@jordanJ0822
franky isnta D , but tom gave it to him despite he not having a D. Cutty D Flam. Cutty D Franky@@jordanJ0822
I actually love this idea.....
If it's not this I have a personal theory that is there's almost 2 meanings in 1. D symbolizes Destiny to bring the Dawn or Dusk of a new era
I dont remember listening to this video before but i must have as i have a comment already
Don Don Don bummer in english they put "Doom"
Clan:
Thousan D.
I swear the sunny carries the will of d.
youre just talking bs and thats why no one talks to you
Well done! Good theory!
Also Don - Gangsters and mafia leader..
Like pirate captains who seeks freedom..😊
I am gonna be bawling when One Piece comes to an end. I don't think I will ever be ready for it. Imo, it's the greatest anime of all time, it's a historic peace of art and story telling that rivals the greatest works out there in existence and has been paving the way for anime for years.
Agreed
9:45 oh yeah Roxc also broke a lot of forbidden taboos too
Defiance is another word that can be used by all d clan members
True, defiance can be seen through every d member, seeing as they’re all quite resilient
@PrinceOfAllAnime my theory of the D clan is, two words Dawn/Defiance. The C.D. use the word defiance to label them, while Joyboy took those words as the Dawn of freedom.
That's why Sai in recent chapter was doing that thing against the celestial dragon. Don Sai, Don Chinjao. Nice theory!
I thought Tom said do it with gusto not don but thats the anime
REALLY GREAT MATERIAL BRO
Bro caught me in the middle of my eyes rolling.. thanks for the laugh
First. I love this. Don't know if I've actually heard somebody suggest this one. And it's as good or better than any other theory on the matter. Subbed.
I always think of 2 things.
1. What "D" words does Oda keep using as themes in the story or which connect the members we know about
2. Did Oda even mean for it to be an English word?
Mostly 1 though. So here's my list in alphabetical order. I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones though.
Dawn
Defiance
Denial
Desire
Destiny
Devil
Different, Built
Dreams
To the second point, I'm still on the fence. "D" could stand for nothing. Like Homer J Simson's middle name being "Jay". Could be a fun gag. OR it could be a pictogram for a rising sun (rotated 90 degrees) or a half moon. Or it could symbolize incompleteness. The circle is missing it's other half.
its just danger
When you have two parents with D it fills the half circle to be a full circle ⭕️ therefore a sun
You must have felt awesome when the card game uses this exact sound effect as a mechanism for the game. To me that almost confirms this theory
Don Accino would approve of this heeeaaatt
Yooo KatsuDon or Donburi yooooooo
The word "Dreamer" describes them better xd
It could also be that the Donquixote family was also a member of the clan. Both Corazon and Doffy could be representative of the Will of D.
Donquixote is a spanish tale of a crazy knight who fought dragons, the dragons he saw were just windmills
Id like to point out one more thing, I think the reason Blackbeard is a false D. is that he's willing to bow down to anyone if it will serve his own ends. All the other D.s, even when faced with death, refuse to bow to anyone. Blackbeard on the other hand started his entire journey bowing to Whitebeard, who specifically called him a false D. while knowing what a true D. is.
Willing to bow to someone
Takes great WILL🙄
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
And the One Piece is likely going to be the truth of the past and how that truth of how to destroy the world (metaphorically).
great video!
Dreamer.
The entire theme of One Piece is dreams. Every member of the D Clan rabidly pursues a dream. The entire world itself is dream-like.
"dragon hasn't done anything in the story yet"
*shows the one time dragon actually did something in the story*
fatinating, and whn you started to talk about drums and then mentioned master builder, Tom, it made me think of something....and had to look this up. something I recalled from growing up.
Don krieg sitting there like 😉
It’s easy to forget Dragon brought down lightning and changed the winds in logtown. Dragon vs Enel battle would be fun
Will of D. = dreamer..
idk i think determination is a good one if you think about it cuz each of the d clan members were all determined to accomplish their goals like how luffy is determined to be pirate king or like how rouge was determined to keep ace safe when the marines where looking for roger's son
i have more examples but cant fit all in one if you're interested in them reply and ask for them
Go ahead. Spit 🔥
🔥🔥🔥
Im ngl you just snapped
13:33 minutes in and all i can think is what if teach got his main goal and plans to obtain power by doing it the same way someone in the past had done it. Maybe someone like rocks?
The D could also stand for DAUNTLESS, cause Silvers Rayleigh said in the Human Shop on Sabaody, that a Hat like this fits a dauntless man like you ( to Luffy )
LETS GOOOOOOO
OMG!!!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me??? Where is your RUclips channel???!!!!
I think you are absolutely right. The D means drums. Nika has drums around his hips. There is the Drum Island with Dr. Hiruluk speech. Drums are related to songs, which includes Bink's Sake. Drums were used in wars, right? To motivate the soldiers. What else?
Luffy himself is a drum if you think about his shape in gear 4. Rubber stretched filled with air.
@@tauanwerneck3197 after this @GameDogReiku comment, I have no doubt that the D. means Drum. It's genius.
Some time in wano one of the characters literally said the D is for danger, I forgot which episode but it was in wano arc
Maybe it’s something like the members of the D clan’s dreams having the potential to revolutionize the world
So even if toki already mentioned the Dawn , it seems like she was talking about Don , and that Don was still on the dark continent.
Initial D Is ...
Deus Vult Or known as God Wills it
The Famous Motto of Templars knight
I think the D in Initial D stands for Deja vu
I've just been in this place before
Higher on the street
And I know it's my time to go
Calling you and the search is mystery
Standing on my feet
It's so hard when I try to be me uoooh!
Deja vu
I've just been in this time before
Higher on the beat
And I know it's my place to go
Calling you and the search is mystery
Standing on my feet
It's so hard when I try to be me yeah!
i just heard something actually dope about one piece.
It brings to mind the phrase commonly used talking about people who "march to the beat of their own drum."
How about Ask D. Question?
It’s so frustrating telling people my dog’s name (Ace D. Lemon) and when they ask what the D stands for I tell them I don’t know yet lol.
Maybe The D reflect their personality. Some with the Will to carry other Dreams, some that would bring the drums of liberation. And some that would bring the darkness to destroy..
The energy of one piece card game is Don! as well
I bet that rouge got the will of D from Roger.
I guess my sister is a D clan member since her middle name is Dawn. XD She also shares a birthday with Jinbe, LOL! But yeah srsly good theory. I also like "Drum" theory being another possibility.
Imagine it just stands for Devils and we thinking too far ahead 😂😂😂
First thought off hearing this theory, there may well be something in "the ancient king 'Don'" rather than a kingdom?
Maybe Don Krieg thought he was Joyboy as he has the name Don and wore shiny golden armor which would reflect the sun and shine brilliantly.
So…..pride in self-will
You really did this video with a don!
