It’s going to be extra expensive for you. Yes, the ratio of money is better right now however, they do increase everything for tourists, especially around the cherry blossom season it’s going to be really really crowded. Really really hot, really really sweaty and if you aren’t paying attention to their costumes when you go to the shrines and don’t cover up, you get a lot of judgey stares
I appreciate the tips. I have a binder I am filling with the info. I plan on a month long trip as a 40th birthday gift for myself, and things like these will help me enjoy the trip more.
Searching the comments to find out why the out of service train has people on it or that the doors open to let people in. Also, I thought rawdog was something you could get arrested for doing in public.
YES I am so confused about the out of service trains! Why are they "sneaky"? "If no one gets on it when it stops or if everybody gets off of it suddenly when it stops, don't make the mistake of just following the crowd," This part is REALLY confusing, why would you want to get on the out-of-service train when nobody else is getting on it, or stay on the out-of-service train when everybody suddenly leaves it? Is there some benefit or advantage to being alone on an out-of-service train?
i think i understand now!! i dont think she meant “don’t make the mistake i did and follow the crowd” as in the mistake is following the crowd. i think its “don’t make the mistake i did, follow the crowd” as in DO follow the crowd. im guessing it isn’t obvious that the train is out of service sometimes which means if you get on ure kind of fucked 😭

I've seen tourists do that here on our Rapid Transit system here in Seattle since we have a Light Rail Subway system that goes through the city connecting the airport downtown University and other big sites
It's well worth it. I do recommend going with either a good tour group, or if you happen to know someone who's been living there a while and is comfortable with the language & customs going with them, at least for your first time. And by knowing someone, I mean a friend/acquaintance you've known for a while, or a family member, and not just someone you've met online a few weeks ago. :)
rawdog originally was a term to mean having sex without a condom , now it seems to be getting used in normal conversation as a term for doing something without something else.@@-Tarra-
After nearly 44 years of flying from my home in Florida and transiting through Haneda or Narita on my way to projects in Southeast Asia. I actually paid a tourist company for an 8 day excursion for my family to Japan, and saw most of the places you just described. We had a wonderful time and are already planning a hiking trip for next year to Mount Fuji.
I’m use to that first thing because I live at the last stop. So often the train is going out of service temporarily and the other one on the other side is the new train.
Seriously, the cold drinks from vending machines practically saved me during my trip to Japan last summer. It was sooooo hot and I was sweating so much, but thankfully there's one of those vending machines like on every corner. Sadly I drank so much to stay hydrated I couldn't eat much delicious food...
I visited Japan end of June. Humidity did definitely suck. But Japan has too much to do and see that I was perfectly fine with changing clothing 4 times a day. haha
Here in Japan, there are different train services for each line. For example Local and Rapid. Limited Express is also available for some. Be careful when buying train tickets! Rapid and Limited Express does not stop at all stations.
Wearing your backpack in front of you in a crowded place is a no-brainer and yet many people are oblivious to that. I used to ride the commuter train in SF Bay Area and got hit by backpacks worn behind when people turned their body.
Living in Tokyo now and just changed my job so I now have to take the super crowded Ginza line to work. This week, there was a Japanese guy standing behind me who did not bother to do this and kept hitting me with his backpack. 🤬
Some people, like myseklf are not 'targets' thus no one would try to rob me therefor I put mine on the back still. That and Im not stupid to put something like my wallet or any valuables in it.
@@izumiruki I was always mindful of people around me. If someone was about to smack me with his/her backpack worn on their back, I'd stop it immediately and the person always turned around to find out why and I told them off.

Quite similar with Finland with the trains. And for the love of god, you will get so many angry looks if you are loud on the train. But at least we don’t have a heat problem :D (Help it’s October and I’m already freezing to death)
I went to Japan last august and let me tell you I will never go in the summer ever again. I woke up at 4am due to jet lag and walked outside and it was 98 degrees out with 94% humidity. I almost fainted and it was 4am! But other than that, was the best experience of my life and will definitely go back to Japan. Just not in the summer time lol
Best piece of advise. Immerse yourself in the culture, go to public demonstrations, ask why things are done in the manner they are, walk or take a rickshaw if you can and talk to to the operator (they know all the cool spots), take a day trip on the train system to anywhere and explore. Climb Mt Fuji if able and enjoy the warm camomile tea at the new 5th station it is delicious and absolutely worth every ache and pain you earned from the climb!

Yeah, ppl from more southern states will do much better in Japan summers. I had some family from the north tell us how unbearable the late spring / early summer was and that we shouldn't book our tickets for Aug. But we did anyway and it was fine. Coming from Texas, it felt like a pretty normal summer, just a touch bit more humid but nothing crazy to us.
I recently moved from Missouri to Philadelphia where they consider anything under 20F to be unbearably cold. Several people here have said "oh you're probably not used to cold winters. I just laugh.
@@MichaelfromtheGraves I’m in NE Mo and I shit you not, 3 days ago it was like 65-70°F and I walked out the next day to drive to school and I was like “oh it’s sunny, probably warm” and proceeded to walk out into 10°F and froze my hands off because I ✨didn’t start my car earlier✨

@@Alec_RTR North has nothing to do with anything in this case. Ive lived in South Mississippi on the gulf and Northern Wisconsin on the great lakes. Sometimes between the great lakes and the corn sweat it seems even worse.
Well, I just came home from a 2 week trip to Japan. After the initial 7 days in Tokyo and Sendai, we went from a reasonable 21°C in Sendai to 27°C and extreme humidity/rain in Kyoto. I would have prefered a rain coat over an umbrella, but the heat and humidity would have made me soaked with sweat.
Taxis are expensive but quick is where you need to go is close. Trains are inexpensive and good for long distance travel. Bullet trains can be expensive depending where you are going but are worth it due to speed.
Spent a couple of weeks in Japan a few years ago. Since you mentioned vending machines: It's just not done in Japan to buy food or a drink and consume it while walking down the street. That's why there are almost no trash cans on street corners like you'll find in American cities. They're all next to the vending machines. (So if you need a trash can for some other reason, look for a vending machine.)
Went last year september 25th to October 9th and had an absolute blast. Just watch out for the deer in Nara, they are very persistent if they see you with the deer biscuits.

Also don't take a taxi from the middle of the line unless you're the sixth chairman of the Tojo clan and you wish to vent to your predecessor and father figure before disappearing in dramatic fashion.
Eating isn't forbidden on the train but it's considered unsanitary, rude, and likely to cause mess. Also people don't want to be sitting next to someone scarfing down lunch. The exception is bullet trains, which have a tray table like on planes

It’s funny she never mentioned that. The way she represents Japan is basically saying I should just never go. He calls her and I quote (Japan for dummies, but if it was 50% right and 50% wrong ). The train carts meant for specific genders, have doors on them, same as the bathrooms would So, there’s no excuse for confusion And this actually almost never happens. Also, they do have public intoxication charges that you can get They’re just a little more Tolerant than American cops are in this matter. The more prayer to help you for being drunk, then throwing you in a drunk tank and then fighting you because you’re fighting them because you think you’re being arrested. Rofl

I'm heading to Japan next month for the Sakuras (Cherry Blossoms). It will be my first time Japan and I've seen some useful tips, thank you for giving more advice.
Damn ur going to have to pay extra for the J pass unfortunately. They increased the amount drastically.

@@Kdija89Thank you. It’s my first time going there.
It’s going to be extra expensive for you. Yes, the ratio of money is better right now however, they do increase everything for tourists, especially around the cherry blossom season it’s going to be really really crowded. "In Tokyo, average summer temperatures typically range from about 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F" man, I wish my summers were that cool.
In India it goes upto 40°C
As someone who's body hates high humidity, thank you for this knowledge.
Yeah, I'd recommend avoiding Japan from July to September, if that's the case 😅 But autumn and sakura season are absolutely perfect there!
I ABSOLUTELY LOATHE high humidity!
Still pretty humid in October
I feel like my body wants to melt and explode from high humidity. I feel like trapped in a liquid net, if that makes any sense.

Searching the comments to find out why the out of service train has people on it or that the doors open to let people in. Also, I thought rawdog was something you could get arrested for doing in public.
lmaoo
Maybe you’re too young 😅
im still wondering about the service train.... rawdog not so much lol.( I already know what it is.)

We had a wonderful time and are already planning a hiking trip for next year to Mount Fuji.
the deer bowing was so cute!!
I’m use to that first thing because I live at the last stop.
So often the train is going out of service temporarily and the other one on the other side is the new train.
People shouldn't mistake being quiet on trains with not having (quiet) conversations with other people they are travelling with though.

Seriously, the cold drinks from vending machines practically saved me during my trip to Japan last summer. It was sooooo hot and I was sweating so much, but thankfully there's one of those vending machines like on every corner.

I actually love how respectful she is
Wearing your backpack in front of you in a crowded place is a no-brainer and yet many people are oblivious to that. I used to ride the commuter train in SF Bay Area and got hit by backpacks worn behind when people turned their body.
In Latin America you won't find anyone with their backpacks in their back reason n°1 are thieves
Anyone can rob you with your backpack in the back
I thought it was for pickpockets but good info about accidentally smacking people, I’m from a very rural area and rarely see crowds
If someone was about to smack me with his/her backpack worn on their back, I'd stop it immediately and the person always turned around to find out why and I told them off.

the taxi lights really should be the opposite 😭 !

Quite similar with Finland with the trains. And for the love of god, you will get so many angry looks if you are loud on the train. But at least we don’t have a heat problem :D (Help it’s October and I’m already freezing to death)

I've lived in Missouri my whole life. The weather here is almost identical to Japan. Same hot humid summers, and dry frozen winters.
I concur! Does Japan also have 2 weeks of 60°+ weather followed by a snow storm, because if so I’m all set!
The rain can be so warm that you can walk in it without an umbrella. You get soaked and not feel cold.

Spent a couple of weeks in Japan a few years ago. Since you mentioned vending machines: It's just not done in Japan to buy food or a drink and consume it while walking down the street.
