Thank you for a great lecture. I think the main problem with the academic publishing industry is the fact that the revenue doesn't follow where the value comes from. Scientists are bringing enormous value to the publishers by serving them results that cost hunderds of thousands of dollars to make on a silver plate. Then, other scientists bring in value in their expertise within the peer-review process, provided for free to the publisher. The publisher then brings comparatively miniscule value in editorial work, but collects all the revenue. Scientists are charged for both publishing and reading and at the same time they provide almost all of the value to the publishing business. The global academic publishing revenue is estimated at an astonishing $19 billion, and the beneficiaries carry a tiny fraction of the cost and labor required to produce the value they are selling. To say that this business model is immoral is an understatement.
