  • On January 30th, 2024, We decided to spend some time trackside on the old Reading Railroads East Penn Branch, now, the NS Reading Line.
Around 12:40, I received a heads-up from a friend that NS 19G-30 was spotted just east of Allentown, Pa, with a very notable consist. After receiving the report, I contacted a few friends to let them know of the situation and to see if they wanted to set up a planned, private, train chase. Around 13:00, NS 19G was beginning its work in Allentown, and it was assigned to drop some of its cars.
19G's crew, on this day, went on duty in New York City around 04:00am and departed at 07:00am. Stops at Allentown, Pa, and Reading, Pa would be todays assignments. After their work, they would Bee-Line their train to Harrisburg, Pa, ultimately to terminate.
Around 14:45, our chase group decided to meet in the area of Longswamp, Pa, which is addressed to the village of Mertztown, Pa. As we heard the horn in the distance, we decided to set up shop along Longswamp Road, planning to shoot 19G from across a local cornfield. The epic power for todays train consisted of NS #4004 (DC - AC Conv Unit) ~ NS 4105 (GE AC44C6M) NS #5212 (Ex Southern RR HIGHHOOD) & NS #1700 (Erie Lackawanna PR Interest Unit).
That lashup will make any train videographer or photographer surprised. The Northeast has not seen something as rare as this in years, strongly due to Norfolk Southerns cab signal program, which doesn't allow locomotives without cab signals to lead trains.

After the train cleared Longswamp, we chased it to the town of Blandon, Pa, to get still photos after being notified by dispatch that he was coming to a pause for 2 eastbounds. After the 2 eastbound cleared, we decided to call it for the night.
    Thanks for watching!
