Since I was a kid, I've always loved the 928. If it were my call, and assuming I had the deep pockets, I'd go for a full restoration. There aren't many of these around anymore, and as Bob suggests, they're probably going to continue appreciating in value; especially with a manual, lsd and sunroof delete. That is a pure sports car!
RUclips algorithm playing with me, I had a 81 5 speed. Loved that car. Broke the timing belt going at least 80, no damage to the engine, just my wallet is
Why is it I love cars like this? It refuses to die and I think she needs one more chance. Someone would treasure this car, and I think with a detail and some minor work it could be a cars and coffee queen.
Well i don't know but to part it out would be a shame....l am not a Porsche guy but i like this one....l have a 1958 Corvette i drive sometimes......THANKS BOB AND BECKY..... Old F-4 Shoe🇺🇸
I had a 89 928GT. A five speed is very rare !! I like the look of the earlier ones more than ever now. If the wiring harness is ok they are not to complicated .
Now that would be hard decision indeed…..if they just had a better following. They were not that bad at all and the engineering that went in to it was revolutionary for its day.
Critical to service timing belt, tensioner and water pump, all at the same time. Otherwise bulletproof. Still a fantastic GT car built to cross continents. Clean it up and drive it.
Looking forward to the video overview. I remember these cars well - was 13 in ‘79. My dad was a die hard 911 guy, but I’m an equal opportunity Porsche lover. In the same vein, I love phone dials as well, especially on the 928!
Cannot wait for this series/what becomes of this gem of a 928! I too hold the first v8 Porsche near and dear to my heart. I had one while in high school for a while, back in 2002-2003. My 928 was an '84 S Automatic in Zinc Silver Metallic with Red interior. The 928's sleek, sharp angled shape, unique pop-up headlights, and of course the distinguished burbly growl certainly add to the charm of these particularly "under the radar" Porsches. Your 'newly acquired '79 928 showcases the highly desired Phone Dial wheels. The color is Light Blue Metallic. With lovely 2.7 V8 paired with the sought after 5 speed manual transmission make for a wonderful drivers car destined to charm the enthusiast with ease.
This car is right on the cusp. Maybe consider a sympathetic restoration. Leave some of the wear but complete running and driving, with some of the major cosmetic flaws handled. I think you'd recoup your money and someone would have a darn interesting Porsche. Just my opinion, you're definitely the expert here. Thanks for sharing ~ Chuck
I would leave it original, undertake paint correction as best as you can to restore, do all the main servicing stuff; oil, coolant etc and just drive and enjoy. Considering the kms its done, you can easily put another 30K miles and sell it and still wont be a loss. The restoration route is only for love and keeping it for life and not worth economically. Nice car and drives well!
You took quite a chance driving a car on 20 year old rubber and 20 year old oil. Nothing blew up, so I guess all's well that ends well. I bought my 69 mach1 from someone up your way in 71. I haven't been back to Wichita since the end of 79 except for my mom's funeral in 91. Those 5 speeds are rare in those cars, so I'd say it's worth fixing up.
As a 928 S4 owner - I say part it. The interior parts will be tough to find used for an early car in good condition and I'm sure there's a ton to do under hood as well that will eat your wallet. These are definitely a case of buy the nicest car you can find and I'm glad I passed by plenty like this knowing what I know now.
That's a running drivable 5speed. Don't part it out unless it's rusted too bad, but you don't have to restore it either. Repair it and make it look good and enjoy it. Not every car has to look like it rolled off the showroom floor.
Seems like a cleaning, alignment, tires, and paint are the main needs. Interior is livable. Easy for me to say, but seems like it should be saved. Fix the mechanical stuff and leave the ascetics for now.
If it was an automatic I’d say who cares…but because it’s a low mileage uniquely optioned stick car I’d be inclined to not part it out. It deserves to live on.
Apart from needing a new bonnet, it looks like it does not need much... I am torn! Do it up and give it to me... Still thinking how much would it cost? I love the colour... Shame about the dash! I am looking at it, but it really does not need much!
Don’t part it out! Drive it or sell it as a driver. Would recommend timing belt and water pump, but a non-interference engine, so no timing belt worries when it fails before changing.
Bob how much for that car?! As is??!! I was born in 1979 and my dream car has always been a Porsche. May just be a perfect fit?! I would do the repairs it needs and leave it a patina car.
Sell it. You’re a dealer. You know, make some profit and move on to the next one. I’m sure there is someone out there looking for a low mileage 928 project.
@@krtacct if so, why don't people do them or maintain them then? Sometimes I think people just hang on to something and let it die on the vine to keep somebody else from having it.
isn't this the same car that belonged to the Wizards customer who had the building that fell on top of it? I think it may have been the previous owner's father who owned this car and I think he eventually got dementia and then ultimately went into a nursing home.
I would actually leave it as is. Fix the mechanicals, but leave the body exterior to show not all Porsches are garage queens. And just to piss off the gold chain hair shirt crowd. 😅
It would be a shame to part it out, but bringing to back to 100% isn't economical. I would sell it whole as a project.
You should save it, 68k is restoration worthy!
Hey Bob & Becky, I think that this Porsche is a keeper!!! I'd change the fluids, put tires on it & drive it!!! 👍👍🙂
Save it!!!

Clean er up. Keep complete.

All engines with timing belts should be noninterference, but most are not.😮

Drive it as is and enjoy it.
Thanks Bob and Becky. That's my favorite Porsche color back then.
If the drivetrain is good, I'd say keep it and drive it as is (or with only minimal cosmetic repairs.)

It's easy to work on, there are parts out there, interior is tricky but doable

This is the kind of car we used to see on Bring a Trailer. I’d list it there, no reserve 😮.
Edit: list it just as it sits, dust and all
Good call!
The older the car the more desirable "sunroof delete" becomes - it's got euro H4's too!
Car is perfect. Drive that every day

I’d love to do a outlaw singer style 928 without a sunroof is a perfect candidate Keeping the phone dial rims

It's a save, but it's for a person who is willing to put the work in, and it's a manual 🤔😃
I always loved those cars, to me they look best gray.
Save it Bob!
Great RUclips channel!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Valuable car being a mk1 928 manual. Most are autos. If the American market doesn’t appreciate it the European market will. Or sell it to hoovie.
My first sports car was also an 82 928 auto with sunroof. Fun car to drive!
I am in love with that car. Drive it like it is.
wow. it runs?! save it!
Drive it!! Figure the rest out later. My favorite car as a kid, so I'm biased.
Looks like a keeper. Should check the health of your fuel and power steering lines to prevent a fire.

Restore it, early 928 manual. Even though the interior will be expensive. (ive got an 86 S twin distributor in lavender metallic)
I would restore it. Like you said, they are going up in value. It's too nice to be a parts car.

Cool to look t but you said it, cost you more to restore it than it would just go get a sorted one with less miles. Cool vid Bob!

I love 928's. You can't say it isn't a.... Unique?....look.
If it's rust-free just clean it up good, do something with the hood like black primer, and mechanical restoration to make it a driver, done
Oh definitely save it. It's in plenty good condition to not part it out.

Certain cars just appeal. An early 928 with phone dial rims is one of those cars. The only way I'd buy one though is if it was fully restored.
Don’t part it out! Drive it or sell it as a driver. Would recommend timing belt and water pump, but a non-interference engine, so no timing belt worries when it fails before changing.
Definitely don’t break it if I was in the US I’d buy it and restore it specifically being a manual
Is that the same 928 car wizard had in his shop a while back?
I was born in 1979.
This must be saved Bobo!
id love to see what a good detailer could do with that car.
I'd say keep it and drive it, or sell it as a driver to someone looking for a Porsche. I'd drive it...lol
Keep it and sell it. Do what you can to make it presentable and sell it at a profit. Does not seem like it's your basic trip ...
The car is way too good to be parted out.
Save it! They're not making any more of these majestic old beasts.

There's no market for those unless you can afford to sign blank checks over to your mechanic.
