The number of Space Marines in active duty depends on the time period. At the beginning of the Great Crusade there was almost exactly 200,000 marines (20 legions of 10,000 marines each) By the end the Great Crusade there were ~3-4 million marines, the largest legions by far being the Sons of Horus and the Ultramarines. After the end of the Horus Heresy the number of loyalist marines was typically between 800,000 to 1.2 million, the aim being 1000 chapters of 1000 marines each. After the Ultima Founding with the introduction of the Primaris marines, there are easily 4-5 million loyalist marines in active duty, with possibly another 4-6 million Primaris still yet to be awoken and deployed.
Krieg of the Hill! Old 40k Quote about Marines: "There is less than one space marine per world in the Imperium, yet they have numbers enough for the task at hand."
Even if there was 100,000 chapters with 10,000 in each thats still less than 1 per planet :) There is a Billion, Billion planets that we know of in Imperial Census acording to lore, writen as a number, the total number of known planets is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000.
@@ChaoticPinky Lore wise the Imperium of man has around 1 million inhabited worlds so it's roughly 1 marine per planet. Due to the Horus heresy chapters are with a few exceptions like the space wolves and Black templers limited by imperal law to 1000 marines.
@@newhope33 Nope that doesn’t even work. Each company has 6 ten man tactical squads, 2 ten man assault squads and 2 ten man devastator squads. So 100. Then they have a captain, a lieutenant, a standard bearer, an apothecary, company champion. So minimum 105-107 if there are two more vets in the command squad. Then you have dreadnoughts and transport drivers. So 1070 marines over 10 companies, not counting dreadnoughts or vehicle crew. Then you have the chapter master, and maybe his bodyguard, the chapters chaplains, Librarians, master of the forge, chief apothecary and armoured vehicle/aircraft crews. So realistically you’re looking at closer to 1300-1500 depending on how many tanks/aircraft a chapter has.
At about the 9:30 mark I think the orcs struggled because the back lines could finally fire on them once they got over that hill. The final approach to the original front line actually gave them a lot of cover.
It's honestly worse than that if you think of the odds of survival for a standard Imperial Guard to survive any battle a space marine is involved in. Add to things like the defense of "Core worlds" like Space Marine home worlds and such that have hundreds if not thousands of space marines defending them at all times you get the result of very few sectors ever seeing a space marine, let alone worlds.
Sadly I think things mostly went down hill so to speak once the defenders lost the front line. While the formation and terrain favored them massively Orks just have too much health and it took to long to kill things once most the tanks and space marines died.
I actually think more people see custodes than they see Space marines. Bassically, Holy terra is, well, a Holy site. It's a place of pilgrimage for the entire Imperium. And whilst very very few people are wealthy enough to be able to afford a trip, that's still a hell of a lot more than are able to see space marines, and getting anywhere near the imperial palace guarantees seeing Custodians. Giant unmoving Golden armoured figures. Then again, the fact Space marines have tributary worlds, where most of the population will see space marines with some regularity, like a couple times in your lifetime.
Indeed that is true and even with all them sightings there is still 99.99999% of people who will never see one, remember we are told there is a Billion, Billion planets in the emperors grasp (1,000,000,000,000,000,000 as anumber). Assuming each planet has atleast 1 Hive with the average population of a medium hive being 400 Million people we can work out at the very least there is at least four hundred quadrillion people in the imperium. (This wont be including hive planets or planets with multipule hives on them, while some planets wont have hives at all we are jsut establishing the most minimal number possible. Also exluding TERRA which reportedly has 10 Quadrillion people living in its under ground hive cities that now span the earths lower crusts) Now lets be bold and say there is 50 Million space marines in total (there is way less) that leaves 1 space marine per 8,000,000,000,000,000,000 or 8 quintillion Imperial Citizens. Thats 1 Space Marine per 20 BILLION HIVE CITIES! And thats with 50 million space marines..... And the lowest estimate of imperial citizens.... in reality the number is probably closer to 1 space marine per 10,000 Billion hive cities :)
@@ChaoticPinky i think the billion billion worlds is a bit much (i always remember it as being a million worlds, but might well be a million million), but yeah, it's still a tiny number of space marines per world. And even less per citizen, as you can already fit like a billion people into an area the size of England with the population density of Tokyo, so an average hive city, with density many times greater than than any existing city, would easily fit a billion into it, not 400 million. Still, Imperium is absurdly gigantic.
@@Santisima_Trinidad Large Hive cities would have a Billion people yes, but Large hive cities are not that common hence why i based it of the average size, there is an actual calculation that was done by a mathmatician using population density for the warhammer 40k universe, its quite an intresting paper to read.
I don't know why I am basicly watching the "same" vid over and over again every other day - and still enjoy it. But I clearly do have fun... So: keep up the good work ☺
Well if 99% of Imerpial Guardsmen die in their first and only battle, if there wasn't a space marine there, then ya, they're rarely ever gonna be seen LOL
2 million ork waaagh? Seems small, must be a skirmish, or orks are bored :p Unless they are purple orks O-O Edit: that ending was glorious! Exterminatus
You really need to do a better job of making the sides a little more balanced. Add a couple of dreadnoughts next time and give the imperials a fair shot.
Nah I don't think I do. I don't like balanced fights. I always prefer having a small force against overwhelming odds and seeing if they can win it. Balance is boring, and no fight in any warhammer lore has been fair or balanced so I'm sticking to the lore. It's always the few against the meany or the weak against the strong. Show me a balanced fight and I will show you a boring story :)
So, uh, astronomy nerd speaking here. 🤓 There's about 100 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, even if we're being extremely generous and give each star 10 planets, there's no more than a trillion habitable planets in our galaxy. There's no way the imperium have as many planets as you said.
