- At the 2015 Budapest fencing world cup Alexey Yakimenko pulled a controversial move against Nicolas Rousset. This video looks at how this affected the history of fencing.
Once again, huge thanks to @CyrusofChaos for capturing this historic moment.

😀😀😀
Hmm
It’s also important to note how the timing change screwed over Yakimenko as well. A lot of his game doesn’t work as well in modern Sabre and he hasn’t changed his game. Unlike Reshetnikov who’s style was made for this timing
My coach even qualified for Rio
😀
hey guys whats the timing change?
After Rio 2016 the FIE lengthened the lockout time on the box (so if one fencer hits the other has a little more time to hit in order to get two lights). The aim was to increase the number of parry ripostes as it would cut out a lot of one light remises but another consequence was that it made it harder to counterattack.
@@SlicerSabre thanks for sharing, wouldn't this affect rousset evenly? Disadvantage at counterattack and advantage at riposte as his defence is phenomenal.
@@platinipirate710 perhaps but his biggest strength is definitely his counterattack rather than parrying
How Pancho Paskov managed to qualify at Rio being just 302nd in the world? 🤔
He came through the European qualifying tournament. Once all spots are allocated from rankings the remaining ones are determined through zonal qualifying tournaments where only one fencer from a nation that has not already qualified anyone may compete.
@@matemindak384 how so? Is there video of his qualifying bouts?
From his FIE profile, Paskov appears to have (for most part) only attended competitions relatively close to his home nation. So he was possibly also underrated. He played his qualification game right with some luck of course.
@@Demphure Paskov vs Honeybone is somewhere out there but I honestly thought the reffing was ok.
@@SlicerSabre pretty sure for Rio's men's sabre, there were about three slots for zonal qualifier since there's no team event for it.
These two gentlemen need to settle this controversy through a sabre duel. And extra assault of 1 point, a sort of sportive duel one could say. should be allowed if one participant believes to have been unfairly judged.
Not too familiar with the rule-set of Olympic fencing... Why was his sabre drop controversial?
Yakimenko was in a position where there was a 90% chance he would lose the touch since he had lost right of way and Rousset's attack had been very strong that day. Instead of attempting to defend against Rousset's attack he just dropped his sabre which forced the ref to say halt. For this he got a yellow card (which would only result in a point penalty if he already had another yellow) but it meant that the touch would be restarted. Basically instead of losing the touch (and hence the match since the score was 14-14 in a match to 15) he got to have another go at winning the match in exchange for a measly yellow card.
@@SlicerSabre Yeah....no. That was dishonest fencing at best, offense against sportsmanship at worst. He didn't even TRY to make it look like he'd lost his grip....just straight up and in the open dropped it...should've cost him the bout, to be honest. It was cheating.
Karma biting him on the ass against Paskov makes me happy.
@@samsignorelli One could have black carded him for unsportsmanship behaviour but then you wouldn't ever ref in your life again so...
Why does does dropping the sabre result in a halt? It seems like the far more sensible thing to do would be to let things play out, most likely to an unsurprising conclusion.
@@logitimate I think it's in the rules that a halt must be called when a weapon drops. Safety thing.
Nico now represents Georgia. Hes my friend too glad to see him onboard with bazadze.
So Bauer now coach.... not only Russian fencer?
He was sacked by Russia earlier in the season. Now he runs the "Christian Bauer Academy" in Paris where he has been coaching fencers from multiple countries, including Sandro Bazadze.
Slicer Sabre seems like a dumb move on Russia’s part but go off I guess
@@SlicerSabre Curious, why was he sacked? He's got such a huge reputation for producing amazing sabre fencers. What happened?
@@xDinomanx He fell out with Usmanov
At 3:17 didn't he cross his legs?!
well spotted!
