The making of the knob was so satisfying. I found myself blowing on my screen several times to clear the saw dust😂. That's how into it I was. Beautiful work👍🏾
Awesome! The perfect way to finish my weekend. I know it was a lot of effort but the gate looks the business and the viewing window for the mechanism is a clever solution. Once you put the steering wheel on you’ll be sat there playing with it and the shifter like a very happy six year old in his dad’s car. Congratulations to you both!
i've seen some beautiful things in my life but this is probably THE most beautiful thing's i've seen, there's just one thing i personally think is missing that being a piece of stainless steel that has been laser etched for all your gears and pressed into a dome shape that is then flush mounted to the top of the knob.

Nothing better than spending some time building stuff with your dad! Love the work man! First video of yours I’ve came across and now I’m gonna have to watch all other 45 episodes!
Really appreciate your attention to detail. And agree that doing activities like this is really not about saving money, rather it is about expanding skill sets and having fun.
There is always a budget and the more you can do with that money the better the car will be but ill take time and skill over money every day of the week
The aluminium polished? I don't know, I'm tempted to leave it until we trim the centre console and then I'll decide if the space should be brushed also.
Another bit of awesome- even if the YTY gallery (include me!) proposed not hiding the handmade, bespoke shifter ; at minimum wage it took way to long and it was an absolute pleasure watching you both working to bring it to a conclusion. And the gate looks like it was made by some old world craftsman in coveralls, with a grease rag hanging from his pocket! To bigger budgets and more awesome! Saw the Seven Spot piece- it was nice exposure and nice to see others "in the trade" see the work you are doing accepted.
I love everything you guys are doing to the mosquito . But I think that the shift cables shouldn't go under that bar ,because if the car was to roll back it could hurt those cables, or something could snag them from underneath. But I hope nothing hits them. Keep up the great work and God Bless you guys and your family. 👍🏻 🙏🏼
Awesome stuff. Haven't even finished watching yet so maybe you already covered this... you don't just have to be able to disassemble it in the tunnel and take it out in pieces, you have to be able to reassemble it as well.
Absolutely fantastic. A thing of beauty! Was that an old file I saw which looked as though it had been converted ( modified) to make a wood turning scraper tool? Very resourceful!! Chapeau!
something you might want to think about trying is a wood router. They work just fine on alloy if you need to remove a large amount of material before moving onto the hand file. they do like to be lubricated with wax and will cut better in one direction more than the other (it will make sense if you try it)
The gate looks excellent! The lengths of those gates appear pretty close to the lengths of the throws...I would suggest making the gates longer (maybe 2mm per gate) so you have no danger of not getting into gear if there is cable stretch etc.

Lovely work!! Not sure if the gate was necessary... I was digging the Lotus Elan/Elite vibes of the simple ungated shifter. I loved the gearknob though... What kind of aluminium was used on the gate? should be strong otherwise you'll bend the strips of metal between shifts...
The gate is just a guide that prevents miss shifts, there's little to no contact when shifting and fear not those teeth are more than up to the task we've made sure of it
An incredible effort to make, But as said , Quality is built in not added after, great to watch a tradesman work, fasinateing to watch. Iv built kitcars since the eighties but im learning still, great videos. Amazing car build
Wow! Really well done! I appreciate the patience employed in both design and execution. I’m always inspired and motivated to do the same on my build after watching you guys! 🙂👍👍
Now you need to light the inside of the shifter box. The shifter would look cool through the window lit. And the light spill through the gate would be awesome. Just keep the light source away from direct line of site.
Wood shift knob for the win! I'm curious about steering wheel and I know the time will come soon to show what you've got. I'm hoping for a MOMO Grand Prix, but I also enjoy the Nardi Classic. Whatever you choose will be right as it is bespoke by you, for you. I'm guessing you'll have a quick disconnect and no bigger than a 350mm wheel. Keep up the great work!
I have bought the wheel, it's classic and you are kind of on to the right track because it's loved by both the Germans and Italians although it's a bit more obscure than the Momo GP and far more rare 😉. I prefer larger steering wheels being so wide myself
@@OliverPickard I also prefer a larger wheel and preferably one with a thinner rim. I'm not fond of the newer designs that are honestly too large to grip. I can rule out you going with a Prototipo since those are so common. :D
Interesting. With any project at this level, a lot of people get disheartened about half way through. After getting an endless string of endorphin rushes from completing what they see as huge milestones (milestones like getting all the chassis tubes welded together in a vaguely car shaped single unit, getting that to the point of being a rolling chassis, fitting the engine, and the first start/moving it under it's own power) people find they don't get that same kind of rush while working on the never ending list of fiddly finishing touches. The multiple days of filling and sanding it takes to make door/bonnet/boot gaps look 100% perfect doesn't give anywhere near the same kick as the relatively quick job of initially hanging all the body panels, so these sorts of job often get done to a much lower level of quality. You'd often notice this drop in the builders enthusiasm when looking at the fit and finish on kit cars. You'd see that under the bonnet, all the alloy engine parts had been polished, and everything else was perfectly painted, but then you'd notice things like the door handles that didn't even look like they'd been cleaned since they got removed from a car in a scrap yard, let alone polished. Now, I'm pretty sure that fabricating this spacer block and shift gate (Which look stunning BTW) falls firmly in the realms of "Fiddly finishing touches", but it's been done while a significant number of the endorphin producing milestones haven't been tackled yet. So I'm now pondering if this was a task where they had all the materials on hand, so they just did it now, or if there's some much deeper "Motivation management strategy" going on here to get some of the fiddly, time consuming, motivation sapping, finishing touches done amongst some of the enthusiasm aiding milestones?
Dad and I are built differently, dad's a mechanical engineer and I have a background in marine restoration fiddly stuff is how we made our livings. The tunnel, front bulkhead and floors..exc can't be welded in without the gear shifter fully inplace
Awesome! Although the construction is verry different, it gives a bit of a Spyker c8 cind of interior feel which is one of the most beautiful cars in the world and has the most beautiful factory interior in the world.
C'est magnifique ce que vous construisez ❤est-ce-que avec dad vous allez utilisé du carbone de chez easy composites ?(ils sont anglais aussi)... Bravo a tous les deux 😊
You guys need to get a cross slide vice! It wouldn't turn your drill press into a mill but a close enough facsimily to mill out that gate! A vice, an end mill, and a chamfering bit and you'd be in business. Just my two cents...
Wow I want one PLEASE….. pretty please…. I will never again look into a car with a horrible shift boot and want it I need indeed need one of those. I adore simply adore the gate. Top video Oliver and Dad simply Top.🎉
No it would not and I love the Italian Job also I watch it often. But sadly I will never have your shifter and gate Which I do Love An incredible video Oliver simply the best as I have said before. You both need the algorithm to pick you up now x
Hi Oliver I did ask last week iam sure u arre very busy but can u give me a link to your lovely metal saw , I checked its not in the description. Another great episode. Thank you .
I replied to your comment with the place I bought it and the make and model, I believe its a vevor and was from Mano Mano but I can't find the comment now as I get a few hundred comments a week. it should be easy enough to google though
Always so nice to see your delicate work. What about the door hinges? Think that I saw a video where you were driving a Renault cv4 with the hinges at the back of the door. It seemed that it was rather easy for you to get into the car? Something for the Mosquito?
Yes I'm a fan of suicide doors, my daily driver Citroen 2cv has them but the down side is you need to open the door really wide to get out and with the Mosquito being that little bit wider of a car it would make carparks very tricky
Let the shifter shine! Not full Pagani, but still nice to know that part of that beauriful piece of engineering and machinging will still be visible. That said, I am completely shocked by the amount of weight that you have added to the car just for the old school look of the gated shifter. (Though It is beautiful.) Not having driven one, I don't understand the appeal of the gated shifter beyond aesthitics. As you said, it already shifts great. Do the gates really improve the shifting or just the fun factor?
The gate is there to prevent miss shifts mostly so you get a perfect shift every time but fear not because the gate spacer has had so much meat removed but underneath and above it weighs next to nothing despite still looking so substantial
@OliverPickard hmm.. okay. Never considered a Honda anything performance. What's it compare to a short throw t56 unit? Still alot of rowing. But again...such beautiful fabrication!!
@@OliverPickard I haven't seen the video to the end, as I was doing work in my workshop, and needed to watch, yet also get work done. I'm now curious on rake/clearance angles on your cutting tool. I need to check other stuff you have made, I'm a recent subscriber 😊
Once you pay for the expertise and your time and your father's time, this shifter is probably on par price wise with the ones made by Gordon Murray for the t.50 and t.33. If you are in North America Palatov makes a similar one for his cars, functional, but not nearly as beautiful.
also in terms of hole saws. I was taught in machining class that if you see steam or smoke that means there's no coolant where you want it. With a better understanding of thermal stuff now I would say that technically all the energy that can go into the coolant has done so. So you either need more coolant or less energy.
@@OliverPickard the engine oil was acting as coolant. The small drill bit part was actually about your father you could see a hefty bend when he was punching his pilot hole. I will also express how much I like your oak dimple die and the fact that it does it's job exactly as needed to build you one dream car
Doing a similar project myself. I have a question, instead of adding the spacer (which looks very good btw), did you considered moving the pivot point of the cables up in the lever, to make the throw longer?
I know without the body the suspension won't work right and yadda yadda yadda but as close as that thing is I'd have to take it for a rip in the yard go kart style before too long.
You guys clearly know what you’re doing, but I would have thought you’d want a heavier shift knob for a better shift feel? I think the lever needs to be equivalent or heavier than the linkage mass?
This is a real drive manual gearbox but I think you mean longitudinal like in a BMW or Mazda MX-5 Miata. Yes although it may need a spacer see the Ferrari 250 for an example
The only way this shifter could in way be better is if there were micro switches that would light a display informing the driver of what gear the trans is in.
@@OliverPickard What? So it's not getting painted lime green, with a couple of 10" base cones in the doors, bright yellow under body neons, and nitrous purge nozzles in the bonnet then?.......... Well, in that case I might just have to unsubscribe....... maybe. 🤣 Mind you, although I said that in jest, now I'm picturing it..... And I'm thinking that a light green with black accents might actually work quite well on that bodyshell. 🤔
Only just, you would still need to retain the leather on both the tunnel and the stick plus the spacer is carved out from both sides so it's far lighter than it looks so I'd say it's worth it in this case
See everyone your comments really do make a difference 👍🏻
Don't listen to us too much, ok? Before you know it, Mosquito will be renamed Carrie McCarface.

The handmade look of the gates gives it a really nice character!
Agreed it gives a subtle classic look

Thank you very much
a gated shifter looks great...but you would probably have to add more throw side to side to make it practical
Looks great! Now a round one for Jolene. I replaced my black plastic one because it got so hot.
Mines one of the big ami 6 ones. Maybe one day when we have the kit to make a sphere
Nice job, keep up the good work lads! :)
Thanks!
Very accurate work 👌👍
You guys need to get a cross slide vice! It wouldn't turn your drill press into a mill but a close enough facsimily to mill out that gate! A vice, an end mill, and a chamfering bit and you'd be in business. Just my two cents...
We need a lot of things but we are doing pretty well with what we've got and we'll get there
Inspirational channel... Thanks so much..
Thank you!
THAT'S SO COOL!!!
Thanks 👍🏻
Have you ever thought of adapting the lathe to be able to do some basic milling work? Which may have been easier making the gate
Wow I want one PLEASE….. pretty please…. I will never again look into a car with a horrible shift boot and want it I need indeed need one of those. I adore simply adore the gate. Top video Oliver and Dad simply Top.🎉
Thank you so much! it simply wouldn't be a supercar without a gated gearshift
Yes of course but it might be tricky for you to get into the car with standard doors, or?
Muy buen trabajo pero estoy deseando ver el coche terminado
a very nice shifter mechanism indeed! nicely done guys ^^ now, can you fix thoes brackets for the stearing rack?
The steering rack mounted are perfect, one is wider than the other because that's how it is on the rack if that's what you mean?
Just lovey, well done.
Thanks 👍🏻
Beautiful work~!! But MAN is that a long shifter!! Its going to be like rowing a canoe!!
The throw roughly 60% less than an OEM honda unit and the placement is full rally car
@OliverPickard hmm.. okay. Never considered a Honda anything performance. What's it compare to a short throw t56 unit? Still alot of rowing. But again...such beautiful fabrication!!
There's a first for me. Never seen wood turning on a metal lathe 😊
We are nothing if not resourceful, we used it to make our oak dimple die tool also
@@OliverPickard I haven't seen the video to the end, as I was doing work in my workshop, and needed to watch, yet also get work done. I'm now curious on rake/clearance angles on your cutting tool. I need to check other stuff you have made, I'm a recent subscriber 😊
This one is definitely worth watching to the end I'm particularly proud of it
You should include your other channel on this channel somewhere...I cant find it
It's Pickard Home and Garden I'll start putting a link in the description 👍🏻
Thanks...that shifter is the bees knees😊
@mickeydelano6706 I've put a direct link in there just for you 👍🏻
The interior is going to look so good the bodywork is going to be hard to match up . At the moment it looks like Leroy cleetus McFarlands car .
Yeah as much as I don't like seeing it as just a bare chassis it's easier to film us working on it with the body off
That hole in the side of the tunnel will become known as the Hoover hole!
Haha
A beautiful thing.
Thank you 👍🏻
Once you pay for the expertise and your time and your father's time, this shifter is probably on par price wise with the ones made by Gordon Murray for the t.50 and t.33. If you are in North America Palatov makes a similar one for his cars, functional, but not nearly as beautiful.
Thank you very much 🙏🏼
something tells me the break small drill bits a lot. all in good fun though I am really enjoying this series
also in terms of hole saws. I was taught in machining class that if you see steam or smoke that means there's no coolant where you want it. With a better understanding of thermal stuff now I would say that technically all the energy that can go into the coolant has done so. So you either need more coolant or less energy.
I've broken a single 2mm drill bit in the last year, it might not be coolant it might be used engine oil 🤣
@@OliverPickard the engine oil was acting as coolant. The small drill bit part was actually about your father you could see a hefty bend when he was punching his pilot hole. I will also express how much I like your oak dimple die and the fact that it does it's job exactly as needed to build you one dream car
@jimysk8er it's a bit harder to set coolant on fire though haha that oak dimple die will out live me
Doing a similar project myself. I have a question, instead of adding the spacer (which looks very good btw), did you considered moving the pivot point of the cables up in the lever, to make the throw longer?
Not really because I wanted a short shifter but you can see my proto type shifters in the previous video
I know without the body the suspension won't work right and yadda yadda yadda but as close as that thing is I'd have to take it for a rip in the yard go kart style before too long.
There's a lot to be done before it runs for the first time but other than some different springs and a front antirollbar the suspension is done
Thanks for another interesting video. As a matter of interest, do you have any estimate of when you expect to have the car on the road ?
No im making promises I can't keep as you never know what life will throw your way
You guys clearly know what you’re doing, but I would have thought you’d want a heavier shift knob for a better shift feel? I think the lever needs to be equivalent or heavier than the linkage mass?
The linkage mass is on the other end of a pivot and doesn't weigh much so that little lump of french oak is more than adequate 👍🏻
hi, that is an awesome shifter. I'm curious as i haven't seen it yet. Can a RWD manual gearbox be made to have a gaited shifter too?
This is a real drive manual gearbox but I think you mean longitudinal like in a BMW or Mazda MX-5 Miata. Yes although it may need a spacer see the Ferrari 250 for an example
The only way this shifter could in way be better is if there were micro switches that would light a display informing the driver of what gear the trans is in.
Not being a sequential box it's not necessary it's easy enough just by feel
Next will be a polycarbonate window and strips of LED's in that tunnel just to "Display" that shifter linkage properly. :D
🤣 definitely not that's far too early 2000s show car for my taste
@@OliverPickard What? So it's not getting painted lime green, with a couple of 10" base cones in the doors, bright yellow under body neons, and nitrous purge nozzles in the bonnet then?.......... Well, in that case I might just have to unsubscribe....... maybe. 🤣
Mind you, although I said that in jest, now I'm picturing it..... And I'm thinking that a light green with black accents might actually work quite well on that bodyshell. 🤔
@Reman1975 Most definitely not 🤣
Get a polishing mop on your bench grinder 👍
Then I wouldn't have a bench grinder
Will the gate be hard anodized for wear resistance (I assume you have used 6082 alloy or similar) or is made of 7075 alloy? Ditto the gear lever...?
No anodising and there's not much wear to resist 👍🏻
you need to make or buy a mall attachment for your lathe, save you heaps of time from filling.
A mill would be great but i think we are doing pretty well and you'd struggle to get the same classic look as something finished by hand
Looks lovely. You do know a leather gear boot would have weighed less . Just saying 😂
Only just, you would still need to retain the leather on both the tunnel and the stick plus the spacer is carved out from both sides so it's far lighter than it looks so I'd say it's worth it in this case
