Dude!!!! Thank you so much for this video. Absolutely best how to for the fluid change i've seen since i started looking 3 years ago. You are a savior!
Oh gosh. You make me blush. Lol
You are welcome. Glad I could help!
@@BigFrogs4x4 when I filled mine I went through the fill cap on the top of the transmission. You know what I mean the black cap on top of the transmission. I'm just wondering if the way I did it is also the correct way, or did I do something and I'm not supposed to. I'd really appreciate if you could contact me back on that
It's fine to do it the way you did it. I've heard others doing it that way. I just skip a step by doing it the way I do it because the full level plug needs to come out anyway.
@@BigFrogs4x4 thanks for the response
I have look all over to find this info thank you so much thats so easy to do. I loved how you started your video with a Jeremiah passage too. God bless you bro and thank you again.
there's also a fill port on top of the transaxle as well; will still need to remove the fill plug on the side to determine fluid level. my drain plug was too close to the frame to use a "L" wrench, I cut the end off of a 8 mm allen key, & used an 8mm wrench to break the plug loose/reinstall. these F23's have an alarmingly small fluid capacity.
Ya, it was "good times" lol
Dude you're awesome. I don't even have a cobalt. I have a 2014 cruze but im glad to see other people using amsoil instead of the gm fluids.
Gm tells you to use there fluid for a reason
I've been using amsoil for 120k miles. And their motor oil the cars entire life.
@@BigFrogs4x4 what car
Every car i own. The cobalt now has 220k miles with no oil leaks and no measurable oil burn
@@BigFrogs4x4 is it an ss
Excellent video but away loosen fill plug first.
i use a squeeze bottle like gear oil comes in. clean it out good, put the right fluid in it and squeeze it through a piece of rubber fuel line, you can actually squeeze it up into the tranny if you cant get to a high enough point for a funnel.
I can't thank you enough lol I have looked in my book and and on line they keep telling me it's a sealed transmission lol
Glad to help. I think amsoil update the fluid they recommend for this trans. Just be sure to get the correct fluid no matter the brand.
This way we don't have to remove the battery box?
I didn't
Great info thank you
Are you sure you are suppose too use that kind of trans fluid for a manual
That is what amsoil recommends. Got it directly from their website.
So you cant top off the trans fluid ? You you just have to change it ?
You shouldn't have to top it off unless you have a leak. But you can just pull the top plug and check the level and top off if needed.
is this the same as a 2011 chevy hhr motor with the manual transmission? 2.2L?
i heard the cobalts and HHr have the same motor.
I believe they are the same but I don't know for 100% certainty.
Why did you add automatic transmission fluid?
Thats what it calls for.
Most manual transmissions calls for manual transmission fluid, not ATF.
@@kevinulliac4080 what is manual transmission fluid. I know some use gear oil? Check out this trans. It calls for ATF. DEXRON. I drained atf out of it.
@@BigFrogs4x4 How is it that you're telling people how to work on their cars and you don't know what manual transmission fluid is? The service manual distinguishes between Dexron ATF and manual transmission fluid.
@@kevinulliac4080 because it is gear oil. I've never heard anyone call it manual transmission fluid. And my 5spd uses dexron atf. Or in my case the amsoil equivalent.
I had an issue with my radiator on my 2006 Chevy Cobalt do you think I need to flush the transmission out because my transmission is empty
Do you have an automatic transmission? Does it have a transmission cooler in the radiator?
Hell yeah
Why wouldn't you fill it from the top of the Trans where the actual fill plug is?
That is the fill level hole. At least from what research I did at the time. Keep in mind the ss 5spd is different from the std 5 spd.
No The fill Port is how you check the level there is a cap with a gear symbol on top of the transaxle that is how u fill it you fill it till it comes out to the whole that you filled it from, I have an automatic and a standard
Either way works
Now was that on a manual transmission or an automatic
Manuel
Thank you now I will change mine in my 2009 cobalt lt
75 85 gear syn mesh oil only trans fluid fry trans . We tested it
One of my Cavaliers had this same tranny and my plugs were totally seized and wouldn't come off. I just bought a 05 cobalt ls a week ago so here we go again. Hopefully it isnt seized as well.
Good luck!
@@BigFrogs4x4 update, just checked it while replacing the entire front suspension and be dammed if isn't froze solid. I even hit them with pb blaster a week ago. it's an 05 with only 100,000 miles and no rust. I'm trying to keep it going but I may have to skip the fluid change. on my Cavaliers I ground a slot into the drain bolt to chisel them off, that didnt even work. any suggestions? seems like I'm the only one here with this issue. these are northern cars, one from Pa the other Maryland. Mabe it's the salt spray.
You could maybe try these, if link comes through. I have this set and they grab well in plugs if you can get one to fit tight. amzn.to/3ju21DW
I got it! all of them. I was scared they were going to do the same thing the Cavaliers did, but they didnt. I got them all! fluid is changed! I'm relieved. i ground down one of my Allen wrenches to get the drain bolt. 100 thousand miles and it looked brand new. previous owner never changed it. I know him personally. strange. there's a fill plug atop the transmission with the same plug. fill plug, check plug, and drain plug. 3 total.
Awesome!
Is this on a ss or base?
Base, but the idea is the same
Plugs and fluid may be different
PSA! Always loosen your fill plug before draining fluids like this. You will be out of luck if you drain all of you fluids just to find out you can't remove you fill plug.
Stop yelling at me.. lol Jk good video bro
Lol I never know how well my mic will pick up my voice. Thanks for watching!
Thank the fuck Christ thank you so much

Always open the fill plug first. Not good if you drain fluid and cannot get fill plug loosened. 👎🏻
Good point. I had drained my fluid once before and knew it would come out.
Wrong fluid for manual transmission
Its not. Its what it calls for and recommended by amsoil.
Buddy just put ATF in a manual
Gotta use what it calls for and the same stuff that's drained out.
DO NOT USE THIS FLUID, ONLY USE GM FLUID, THIS WILL DAMAGE YOUR TRANSMISSION !
You should contact amsoil then. I've been using it for 150k miles without a problem.
Unless they have updated their recommendations since this video.
wrong it takes 75-90 manual transmission oil. damn yankees.
Not according to amsoil for this year and transmission of cobalt. It has 220k miles on it and still running good
@@BigFrogs4x4 I will go with GM's recommendations over an aftermarket company.
❤❤ty
Quiet welcome
Is this the same for a 2.0 supercharged engine ? 2007 cobalt
That I can't say for sure. See comment below
@@BigFrogs4x4 If its a five speed then yes. I have an 06 and had the issue of finding the info until I say this awesome video.
no do not use atf in a Supercharged cobalt. you will damage it. use gm part number 88862472 gear oil. or the part number the turbo cobalts call for. But not the other way around. If you choose to use a generic gear oil, which some owners have reported premature failure doing so, do not use a gear oil with any additives. As this almost always leads to premature failure. If you want go read all the horror stories in anu of the cobalt forums from improper gear oil change.
Thanks for the input
