- I frequently get asked how many lights are needed and how many studio lights do I use for different shoots. You’ll be surprised how often I use very few lights so, in this video, I show you some really useful 3-light setups for fashion and beauty photography.
I also run you through a selection of shots and how they were captured and the light setups I used. Whether you’re using one, two, three or more lights, it’s how you use the light - knowledge is key to capturing that perfect image.
Portrait photography lighting ideas. Three creative ways to use three lights. From soft, angelic lighting to darker, more contoured lighting, there’s no end to how creative you can be using three lights for portrait photography.

Excellent info on lighting, very helpful! Curious to know the brand/type of light used as the backlight? When I search for Studio Light with reflector L40 not finding anything (I'm pretty knew to photography so I'm probably not searching the right name). Thank you!

What strobe lights are you using ?? . I have one godox 400 pro but I need more lights for my small studio . Nice video btw
Hi, broncolor 800
May I ask why you have used so wide 120x30 softboxes for pose 2 and pose 3 in horizontal way? Wouldn't simple octabox be also allright for these situations?
When used correctly a simple Octabox such as a 150 will provide a very softlight (too soft for most beauty shots) a simple Octabox 75 is in the mid range and with the quick fall off if used close to the subject and too hard if too far away. The physics of the 30x120 gives you hard light in one direction and soft perpendicular to the hard light which provides a better sculpting effect. If you don't quite understand this then it's important to learn and understand the physics of all lights and modifiers. Many people just think in 'hard and soft' which is way to simplified for proper lighting. By understanding the physics you can determine a choice of modifier and lighting solution for every situation. A good place to start is in my lighting theory chapter 1, in the portrait section on my site.
"L" shape lighting setup? I like the looks of that! Going to have to try that.
Hi Karl- was wondering how using a larger softbox, say 90x120' would change the look of the last shot? Do you think that would be more flattering for everyday people/nonmodels?
Yes if the light source is replaced with a larger one and kept at the same distance then the light will be softer. The good thing with larger softboxes is that you can easily make them smaller by masking them with black card.
Very very nice 👍 video presentation sir
Many thanks

There is a lightstand at the back. And it is not seen on the final images. Meaning the rule for this is to remove that lightstand behind via photoshop?
I have 3 lighting, 2 speedlight and....sun
