Great video Martin thank you. I found Lowry ‘s grave in southern cemetery where I often have a nice walk, very peaceful and beautiful as cemetery’s go, a simple grave and somebody had left an old jam jar on the plinth, brought a lump to my throat, maybe consider a southern cemetery video, plenty of famous Mancunians in there.

We should be thankful that a humble man with Lowry' talents and love for his native Salford was around at a critical moment in time. Long may his memory live on and long may we appreciate his work. The industrial scene is not to be despised. It is in many ways inappropriate for the present private hoarders of so much of Lowry's work should be basking in the appreciating value of such because I very much doubt most of them have any love for the area in which he worked. Kudos to the many public galleries around the north that hold Lowry collections for all to view and appreciate. Well done, Martin, for your insights.

Hi Martin was served this up this evening purely by chance. Some years ago when I was frequently in England working on my Masters I spent a couple of days before heading home wandering your city. I went out to Salford Queys and to the Lowry, which at the time was running an exhibition called Lowry's people. One of the paintings I saw was of the central park in the city and I remember finding the setting so I truly enjoyed this. I will have to pull out the book I bought while there and now look at some of the sites in your tour. All the best from State side.

Martin, if you're interested, you're just in time! Two other scenes featured on Lowry paintings - 'Funfair at Daisy Nook' is the Good Friday/Easter fair run by Silcocks. That was our Good Friday treat every year when growing up. It looks as though it's still on over Easter, 11-22 April. silcocksfunfairs.com/event/daisy-nook-easter-fun-fair/. Also 'Crime Lake' isn't far from there - just over the hill in the direction of Oldham.

There was a painting of what was called Oldfield Road Dwellings. As a kid around about 1970, I went and took a look. Proper terrible looking block of tenements, I mean scary place. I walked around to the back of the building and what I saw was like a scene from Charles Dickens. I must have stood there mouth wide open. The scene was epic in its awfulness. It must have been really bad, as I was still living in what were considered 2up-2down slums with an outside bog in Pendleton! Long gone now, as you say. Great video.

Ps. Part of taste of honey was filmed around St. Mary's Church in Stockport Market Place, beyond which one shop looks the same. Keep up the good videos, you and your team are great. Very interesting Martin, I love Lowry's industrial landscapes. I have quite a number of prints including The Footbridge. You did well locating these vestigial features from his paintings. Very atmospheric the past landscapes of the city. I think it's such a shame so much of our heritage has been swept away in the name of progress.

I grew up in South Manchester, on an estate of detached houses buit in the sixties on ground that was once the hamlet of High Grove. We used to see Lowry when he visited a house on the estate, I believe it was his niece's house and he went around for his Sunday dinner. Before the estate was built there was a grand old house which stood there called High Grove House which had a long cobbled drive that was lined with poplar trees. Lowry must have been visiting this area for years as I found a scetch he made of the house just before it was demolished in 1964.
Loving your videos Martin, I left Manchester in the mid nineties and now live on a small "remote" island off the north coast of Scotland. I've always been fascinated with Manchesters past and the forgotten places and am finding your films fascinating and compulsive viewing. It's like being home again. :)

If you wish to further your investigations of Lowry, Salford’s current “ Lowry,” is Harold Riley. the Salford artist, who was a great friend of his. Harold is a world renowned artist and is a mine of information on Lowry. He still lives in Salford at Irlams o’th Height. Shelagh Delaney who wrote “ A Taste of Honey, “ was born in Broughton, Salford. Mick Coleman, who wrote “Matchstalk Men,” still performs with his brother, and lives in Hyde. In case you wonder why I have knowledge of these people, I was photographer for the Salford City Reporter in the 70s, early 80s, and had much to do with these people. Bob Smithies started his journalistic career at the Manchester Guardian.

The Lowry Theatre at Salford Quays has a Lowry Exhibition. Well worth a visit - not as big as it was a few years ago - possibly they rotate paintings. It is interesting to see his early more conventional works showing how good an artist he was. Although the simplicity of his famous style belies the technicality in creating that look of simplicity.

Just caught up with this episode. Grabbed me as I'm a huge LSL fan.......as well as a Manchester/ Stockport fan. I had many trips to the Lowry collection when they were housed in the Art College in Saĺford before their recent move to the Lowry Centre which I have to say displays them very well.
I know that you concentrate much of your productions in Manchester, but Stockport has many areas of industrial and architectural interest.....including two or three sites depicted in Lowrys paintings that can still be found, even though slightly composite.
    Keep up the good work.

When I was a kid an elderly relative had some Lowry prints on the wall, they always fascinated me. I think that and growing up in a coal mining and cotton mill area gave me a love of old industrial buildings and their history as well as the social history.

Lowry also painted Crowther Street in Stockport. It’s at Upper Hillgate, and it looks very similar now. I believe the council has made efforts to preserve the look so that we see the same view that Lowry was inspired by. Being from Stockport, I must also mention our wonderful viaduct which featured in many of Lowry’s pieces.

Similar tour to the Berwick on Tweed Lowry trail , both interesting . Beauty is in the eye of the beholder , there lays the value .

Brilliant, video, really interesting, shame there aren't plaques up at those locations to show what they were. I have a few prints from a local artist showing fen landscapes from where I live now and I went out to take pictures of the locations in case they changed over time.

I was hoping you'd do a film about Lowry and linking the present with his atmospheric world. Good to see there are still cobbled streets. Thanks Martin as ever.

I was born in Salford and 40 years ago i met many elderly people in care homes that knew LS Lowry during his days as a rent collector and also debt enforcer too ,he was regarded as quite a nasty bleeder actually .The lovable old man image you see him generally portrayed as is not quite correct in truth ,as always in history the truth gets forgotten as stories merge into myths .

Rent collectors had to be pretty tough. They were carrying a lot of money through sketchy areas, and retrieving rent from people who didn't want to give it. The characters in his paintings are more like types than people, and that may be the way Lowry saw humanity.

I've been watching your videos for about a year now and have seen quite a few of the older ones. I love Lowry and can't believe that it's taken me this long to find this video. It's phenomenal. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this.
I think that you're right on all accounts here. The final one at the junction of Aspin Lane is shown quite nicely on Google Maps. For a few frames there are older photos dating from July 2008, before Aspin Lane was blocked off, and it creates a 'hairpin' corner identical to that in the Lowry. Great spot.
By the way, my introduction to Lowry was as a young kid when the Grattan Catalogue of Autumn / Winter 1978 showed a Lowry on its cover. I was so fascinated by it, instead of wearing out the toy section pages, I studied that painting endlessly engrossed in its detail. If you could do a video pinpointing that Lowry cityscape I would be grateful beyond words! All the best and sincere thanks for all your efforts.

@@MartinZero Well, if you're up for the challenge (which would be amazing), then I've managed to find out that the painting is called Industrial Landscape (Ashton-under-Lyne) and was painted in 1952. Apparently it's crossed the Pennines and can now be found at the Bradford Museum and Art Gallery.

I once lived on Boarshaw Road at the bottom of 24 Steps and the fact that Lowry painted this scene has always fascinated me. I know Bob Smithies' niece and recently asked her if she knew where the painting is now but sadly it is no longer in the family.

Hi Chris. You lived on Boarshaw rd ? Was the painting owned by The Smithies family ?

@@MartinZero Hi Martin, yes I lived in the row of houses situated at the bottom of 24 Steps in the 1990's. As far as I know the painting was in the Smithies family for many years and I have been told it was then sold for a considerable sum to the Uncle of another friend of mine...unfortunately nobody seems to know where it is now? Can I just say that I am finding your videos very interesting indeed, and your passion for local history shines through...keep it up!
