I hope you stayed out of Rachael's way so she could "Go Out and Fix" it! Great video!
Hello Sir. I worked in the Oilfields for 22.6 years on riggs. Drilling, work over, and production. A lot of the smaller drilling rigs and all the larger work over/ production rigs are built, with the derrick in two sections. The over all height of them are 95 to 120 feet. There is two ways to scope the sections apart. One is with cable/winch. The other is hydraulic. The rams to scope are 4 or 5 " dia.and travel is 50 to 55' the cylinder half is usually bolted in the top section and ram to the bottom. As the ram lifts the top section at couple of key points, as top section clears going up, a set of ram stabilizers, bolted in bottom section, fold out catching the ram to hold so does not bend or buckle. Personally I like the old school cable lift/scoping way. But if you do not pay attention, you will crunch and destroy. The drum used is the main drum winch usually has a 35 to 40 ton pulling capacity. So a 1"" cable(straight pull gives 70 to eighty thousand pulling force) then for every sheaves used. doubles the pull so a three sheaves block Equals 6 lines x (35 to 40 ton drum draw works) = 210,000 to 240,000 pull force. The larger drilling rigs run even bigger draw works bigger lines and more sheaves to reach up to over 1,000,000 pulling force
Thanks !!! Haven't seen any of this done before !!! Wondered about the plastic line cover and hen you showed the whole thing !!! Great stuff !!!! Thanks !!!
Steve you are the man!
That track is called a cat track most booms have them for extending in and out some have ribbon hoses that do the same thing with out the plastic cat track but they are expensive and when 1 hose blows you have to change the whole ribbon hose assembly that's why most just use a cat track so you can change individual hoses
A thought I had watching you clean the inside of the boom. If this is going to be a common cleaning task for you, you might look into the pressure washer nozzles that they use to clean sewer pipe. Multiple jets coming out radially and some spin.
Wonderful job Mrs Cox. Stephen you did ok too. I guess. LOL new new camera guy he is a keeper.
Dang, you must be working on the same kind of boom as I am. 4 stage boom.
elevators will go up to 5 stories on a single stage cylinder. on another note take a 3/16 tig rod and bend 2 inches over at the end put a piece of scotchbright in there and hammer it home
I saw a single pole lift that raised cars 4 floors up from the basement to the 3rd floor in Bethesda Maryland it was at one time a Chrysler Plymouth dealer and was at that time making some of the first foxbody convertible mustangs about a 3 ft diameter tube was crazy to see in action at least 40 ft up fast down slow up . I worked on datsun z cars there till they had me switch transmissions to give noise to another persons car and had to fix a 280z that a mechanic filled a cylinder with cat litter oil absorbent. Another mechanic went to put the timing chain on a l28 motor after putting the head on and had the gear in the back was a nuthouse time to go too much traffic was my reason did encounter a 6 carb lamborghini totally screwed up was like working on 3 240zs at the same time
hey man if you still have the launch usa lift could you do another update on it?
This is paltry compared to the ones that were built by a Remco Hydraulics in Willitts California. The built some monsters single action cylinders over 35 ft long. Most of there largest ones were used in the construction of our ICBM Minute Man silos (super fast opening ) and in the legs of Jack Up oil drilling offshore oil rigs.
The end of the building of the silos and Catapiller offshoring their cylinder supply to China the company caused the company to fold.
I removed and reinstalled a cylinder on a trash compactor it was huge
Somehow RUclips turn off several of my subscription. I missed last couple of your videos, but I'm back now.
Thanks for posting video. Good stuff. Work safe.
Great video. Nice to have the tools you need to do your job, and nice view of your shop...
Stephen there is a simple solution : pressure wash sewage high pressure hose and nozzle.

Thanks for the video!
Hmmm......lots of fire equipment out there. Always will be too. Perhaps a lucrative career direction.
Nice work. I'm few videos behind.
I am not a robot my dear Captcha
Using a hydraulic cylinder to install a hydraulic cylinder, who'da thought. COOL.
That's what she said....
You need fork lifts around there. That's how I put together boom lifts.
Mostly he is just a regular mechanic prolly not cost effective?
Great for R&R on engines too!
Stephen and others who are gracious enough to share their endeavors are likely at a disadvantage filming everything. It takes time, effort, eqpt. and the like. Biggest is a willingness to share their exp3riences and knowledge despite having to overcome obstacles.
Most don't consider the small to medium sacrifices providers surely make in making these vids. So to financially a fo4k might be outa reach at the moment? I know RUclips doesn't provide much despite wrangling profits in the millions they hand out very very little compensation to their "Partners".
Might figure that before using the SHOULD or NEED words? Can make folks feel poorly when they commanded to have something they might not need want or cannot afford?
A great and adult way to phrase that would be "Nice work, I use a forklift to lift and push Hydraulic Acuators into blind installations."
Maybe the whole Fire Crew wants to assist installing the ram into the boom? Comradery and all that mushy team building stuff?
It's too early to be awake.
While some things are bigger in texas upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2f/Peterborough_Lift_Lock.jpg/2560px-Peterborough_Lift_Lock.jpg , 7ft diameter 140 ft long cylinder
That is a large cylinder. Like to have all the used hydraulic fluid for my truck when they do maintenance yowzas free fuel for me baby!
i like to be a ---------------- , i deal with 12 5/8' and 10 5/8 " dia hydraulic cylinders for in ground truck hydraulic truck hoist that only need 300 Ibs of pressure to lift a medium duty straight trucks
I feel for the guy that had to polish that bore.
If the rebuilder doesn't clean it all out when they are in there, put them on blast and never go back. If it wasn't cleaned, it wasn't inspected and therefore the job was not done even close to satisfactory. I used be said rebuilder so I should know.
I hope you inspected that energy chain lot of time it's junk
