- Sweden has received more refugees per capita than any other country last year, but many Swedes have started to question the country's immigration policies as crime rates and extremism are on the rise.
Traditionally, Sweden has been viewed as welcoming to refugees.
In 1970, most immigrants came from other European nations like Finland, Yugoslavia, Denmark and Greece. The 1980s saw people come from Iran, Chile, Lebanon and Turkey.
In the last 10 years, the numbers have taken off and in 2015, nearly 163,000 individuals applied for asylum in Sweden, a nation of 9.8 million people.
Syrians accounted for 51,000 of these asylum seekers, 41,000 came from Afghanistan, 20,000 from Iraq, along with thousands from Eritrea, Somalia and Iran. A combined 4,000 came from Albania and Kosovo.
Today, around 1.6 million people living in Sweden were born in another country - that is 16 percent of the population.
Many new arrivals are languishing in temporary housing, beggars and homeless live in the streets, and some neighbourhoods have seen an uptick in violence and extremism.
Concerns over security are growing and recent information about members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) living in Sweden and going to fight in Syria has received lots of media attention. According to Swedish police, around 300 people, many of them from the city of Gothenburg, are believed to have gone to Syria.
Then there's violent crime - in the past several months murders and assaults have taken place in asylum centres and in neighbourhoods with large numbers of immigrants.
The Sweden Democrats, the only party that has been advocating a more restrictive immigration policy, is now the third largest party in opinion polls, despite efforts by established political parties to isolate it.
So, what is behind the recent backlash against immigration in Sweden? Why is the tide turning for refugees in Sweden?
Al Jazeera went to the Swedish community of Ostra Goinge, an area that has received a number of new immigrants, to speak to citizens and politicians about the country's immigration policies.
Mayor Patric Aberg is a member of the Moderate Party, traditionally seen as a business-friendly party opposed to the ruling Social Democrats. He is calling for a "pause" to accepting applications for asylum. While he speaks of economic benefits he says there's a need to foster better "social integration".
"In Sweden right now I think we need a pause. In a very short period of time, since June last year, we have received more than 100,000 refugees. As you may have seen here in our community, we have very few apartments, we don't see a growth of jobs enough to employ all those coming.... We cannot in such a short period of time take care of so many people, our system cannot handle this," Aberg says.
"You look around the world and you hear reports about whats going on in Stockholm, Sweden, Europe and ask: will the people arriving here bring these problems with them? And I think this spread of fear is growing and we really need to work hard to ease their fear. It's not as unsafe as people think. But it's a feeling people have and we should take it seriously," he says.
Locals in Ostra Goinge have mixed feelings about refugees and migrants settling in Sweden.
"I guess they are doing what they can, but I think perhaps there are too many immigrants. It's been hard on the schools and our welfare system... We have received so many, and it takes time for them to integrate.... We have had problems with break-ins, we are not used to that... it happened to me, but they say it's being investigated," says citizen Maria Alm.
We also speak to the Swedish Interior Minister, Anders Ygeman, who is responsible for police and border controls; Marja Lemme, a political scientist at Stockholm University; and Ivar Arpi, a columnist for the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

As an immigrant myself i feel that we are guests in someone else’s house and would be very impolite to not take off your shoes,be demanding and not respecting someone’s house.
If you’re an immigrant it’s your job to be productive,polite,respect the culture and try to blend in with the locals and not the other way around.

Are these refugees or invaders? When my mother was waiting to come to the US, she perfected her English and took classes in American culture. When she got here she did everything she could to respect and adapt to her new country. My family and I immigrated to the US over 20 years ago from the Philippines, when I was only 11. Even then, we knew we would need to learn and be fluent in English, and work hard to be successful. My parents worked themselves to the bone to make a successful life for us. Their English isn't perfect, but they get speak it well enough to gain respect. They're both healthcare workers, and they are good friends with their co-workers, families and patients from all backgrounds. My siblings and I worked hard to uphold our US lifestyle, and have fully integrated in this society. My point is, immigrants will have to adapt and integrate into their new country they will call home. They will have to learn the customs, language, laws, and to abide by them. It's not the nation's job to accommodate you because of where you came from - of course you can get aid like affordable health care, housing, tax incentives, etc if you are really in dire need. But don't ask or expect handouts like you're owed something. You need to work hard and create your own successes. Immigration is good when well regulated, but if immigrants are taking advantage or are unproductive, then what's the point of accepting them for the good of society?

yeah for the most part. a lot of them are here for the swedish girls also though. many girls are too scared to go outside these days. the number of attractive girls ive seen recently walking around outside i can count on the fingers on one hand. back in the 90s there were beautiful girls everywhere. so already now they have managed to create a kind of taliban society with just old people and men everywhere
I live in Canada and one thing I have noticed is some immigrants never seem to fully learn the language (English/ French are our 2 official languages) of Canada. I've talked to or met some , who have been in Canada for years and still don't speak proper English. To me, that should be one of the FIRST priorities and a condition of coming to a country. That you HAVE TO learn the language. It would be in everyone's best interest, including the immigrant.
For most people one year is not enough to pick fully a language. But when they still can't speak properly a second language after 10 years, that shows they're unwilling to learn and is worrysome.
Well I travel a lot and I make sure to learn the basic language and etiquettes of that place . Really its not that hard . How can someone be not interested in other cultures is beyond me .
The same thing in Brampton on, some people live there 20 yrs still don't know the language, they don't need to learn it because the middle east owns Brampton.

Actually we do have a big problem with this overwhelming quantity of refugies from other cultures.
I'm an immigrant myself. What I have learned is this.
We immigrants are moving to a new country.
We are NOT meant to import everything about our country into the new country.
There is a reason we all left our country.
And if we bring those problems and toxic traditions in the new country, you are just tainting your new home.
We are proud of our cultures, but we have to admit there is something in our culture back in the original country that made that country a failure.
Do not bring the bad things and terrible practices into the new country.
A lot of immigrants think they can just transplant their entire lives into the new country without having to change.
This is wrong.
There are things you need to leave behind. Those are the things that made your country fail.
Leave them behind. Whether it's maltreating women, child marriage, old religious rules that make no sense... All of that needs to be left behind.
There is no place in the new country for old, damaging ways of thinking.

You must understand that there is just as many immigrants from the balkans both christians and muslim as there are from the middle east. I dont like certain journalists that are pro-muslim. They have an easy time judging other nations for not accepting immigrants without giving it second thought. Last i checked, any country has the right to accept whomever they want within, either to live or work. Those who are accepted must accept the countrys local way of life, respect it and try to integrate withinthe countrys culture. As a Greek, i wouldnt be mad if Germany or Sweden didnt accept me, even if i have a masters degree in engineering, its their country, and their right to accept whomever wants to live there

That was due to the lights blinding traffic and being deemed unsafe.
