  • Introduction:
Printing on PET and OPP film requires inks that have good adhesion and printing quality. In this video, we will discuss how to make water-based gravure ink for printing on PET/OPP.
Part I: Choosing the Right Resin
PET and OPP films are difficult to wet and adhere to because of their low surface energy. Therefore, it is essential to choose the right resin. Taiwan PU has developed TPUCO WPU-97-8971A and WPU-97-8971C, aliphatic water-based PU resins that bond and adsorb electrostatically with the substrate. These resins improve adhesion without the need for additional adhesion promoters. They are also highly compatible with pigments and ink.
Part II: Choosing the Right Pigments
Preferably, choose pigments that can withstand prolonged exposure to light, have good heat and chemical resistance, and have finer particle size for smoother and more consistent printing. However, cost is also a factor to consider.
Part III: Choosing the Right Additives
If you're in the printing industry and looking to formulate water-based gravure ink for PET and OPP, you need to know about the right additives. Water-based gravure inks need to have stability and fluidity, and this is where additives like defoamers, adhesion promoters, viscosity modifiers, and dispersants come in.
Defoamers can be anti-foaming, de-foaming, or foam suppressing. When choosing a suitable defoamer, consider compatibility and defoaming ability. Mineral oil-based defoamers are suitable for semi-gloss and satin latex paints, while organic silicon defoamers are more suitable for high-quality water-based coatings or inks.
Adhesion promoters are another additive that enhances the adhesion of ink to PET/OPP substrates. You can select PP adhesion promoters based on melting point and polar group content, with non-chlorinated adhesion promoters being recommended over chlorine-containing raw materials. Start testing with small amounts to see the cost-effectiveness of the amount added.
Viscosity modifiers can improve the rheological properties of the water-based gravure ink. Most coatings and inks are pseudoplastic fluids that require flow modifiers to establish an entangled structure with the resin and pigment, resulting in high viscosity and good storage stability. Thixotropic fluids are another type of flow modifier that establishes a 3D network structure through hydrogen bonding.
Surface wetting agents can affect the wetting and leveling of ink and substrate, which affects print quality. Adding an appropriate amount of wetting agent in the ink formulation can reduce surface tension, improve wetting and leveling, and enhance print quality.
By choosing the right additives, you can improve the adhesion and printing quality of water-based gravure ink on PET and OPP.
    Conclusion:
Using the right resin, pigments, and additives can significantly improve the adhesion and printing quality of water-based gravure ink on PET and OPP. TPUCO WPU-97-8971A and WPU-97-8971C are highly recommended as the ink binder. When selecting pigments and additives, consider the characteristics of the PET/OPP film, cost, and usage conditions.
