Hi Harry. Welcome to N gauge. The only downside (for me) is the lack of choice of locos - especially in the early eras of steam. I look forward to following your progress.
Not many swap 00 Gauge for N Gauge, as far as I know. You could have a 009 gauge steam engine running on your new railway, like Prince of Ffestiniog Railway status. 009 gauge models will run on N Gauge track.

I switched from 00 to n 10 years ago for the exact same reason. I recommend trying Kato track for reliability. Looking forward to future progress 👍
