- Approaching a spiral roundabout and how to drive on the spiral roundabout using different lanes for different exits.
I cover going ahead on the spiral roundabout to take the second exit using the middle lane then using the right lane to go ahead on the spiral roundabout.
Next I cover taking the 3rd exit on the spiral roundabout, where to start and where to move on the spiral roundabout.
Finally I cover a right U turn 4th exit on a spiral roundabout. I cover where to start on the spiral roundabout, when to move left into the middle lane on the spiral roundabout and finally when and how to exit the spiral roundabout for the 4th exit.

Spiral roundabouts are good as long as the highways agency or local authorities keep the road markings well painted otherwise they are dangerous.
That’s a good point
Unfortunately that's not what happens around here 😂
Exactly that's a good point, because when there are no lane markings and arrows on spiral roundabouts I get very confused and that's I'm hating them lately but I advice just be patient and slow if you're not sure
I just came across this video at the right time. It made spiral roundabouts so easy. My exam is in few weeks. Thank you
Safe driving and good luck
I struggle with spiral roundabouts and no matter how many videos iv watched can't grasp it. But this video helped a lot as I take this roundabout all the time in my practice lessons.
Its so easy when u can see it in a place u drive.
Good luck in the roads
I’ve only just realised how easy they are I’ve struggled with them as the town I used to live in didn’t have any and moving to a city with a lot of them it’s a pain
Safe driving
Thanks so much! It’s help me a lot to understand what happens in this round about! 😂
Safe driving
Thankyou , the lane disiain I understand but the signals ie when you are in middle lane but still indicating going right on the roundabout but not moving to the right lane
Yes it takes practice. The signalling is helping other drivers behind you on the roundabout.
Thank you so much , made it look easy 💯
Safe driving
This was so helpful. Thank you.
Thank you. Safe driving
Thankyou ❤🥰
You’re welcome 😊
I've passed my test but in an area where there were no spiral roundabouts so if I've faced with this which eventually I will be, I am going to freak out!
Where did you pass?
@@JamesTravis West wickham in South London
@@Mike.Cebert me too. nice area that
I passed my test and have been driving for 2 months but really struggled with a new 4 lane spiral roundabout in a new city yesterday [actually cut in front of someone]. A lot of the roundabouts are much more complicated than the one above, any general tips for new spirals? Thanks
Hi Travis, excellent tutorials. A question I hope you will answer. If one of your students nearly takes the wrong exit on a roundabout would you grab the wheel and steer into the intended exit. Or would you let your pupil take the wrong turn.
As long as it’s safe, they can take the wrong exit
Do you need to keep your right signal on around the roundabout if you are taking the 3rd or 4th exit. If so wouldn't the other drivers think you are wanting to change into the righthand lane.
That’s a good point. But the signal is to inform drivers waiting to get on the roundabout that I am going round to the right and not to pull out in front of me.
This is so confusing or normal roundabouts you stick to the lanes anyway good
Thanks for sharing
If steering prematurely cancels a turn signal (while you are, say, busy manoeuvring around a roundabout) does the examiner expect the student to reengage the signal?
Yes. But I would only reinstate it if I had time.
Hi , I’ve been driving for years but still get really confused !
When I’m setting off from the roundabouts n see so many lanes on the floor then I get really confused in which lane to stick in while driving around .
Can I ask when you did 3rd n 4th exit , you started with right lane but gradually went on the lane that said straight ahead ?
The lane markings can look confusing.
You need to plan your route on the roundabout starting with the entry and exit lanes. Then because it is a spiral roundabout, you know that you will gradually move from the right to the middle and then left to exit.
Is there a ruling in spiral roundabouts as in when you have to move from right lane into middle lane n then left lane?
Once I set off from the roundabout I get confused in which lane I should be in while I’m driving and which exit to take!
Ive always been bad at roundabouts and in my driving lessons we were never taught spiral roundabouts,we just did standard roundabouts
My eyes stop working when i entered to spiral roundabout
That’s funny
@@JamesTravis can i drive slow so that i can focus on the lane ??
@@Normalacademic yes whilst you are learning to drive on spiral roundabouts

This video came at the perfect time, got my driving test next week and spiral roundabouts are the only thing I'm still having trouble with. Thanks for making so many helpful videos!
Glad I could help!
how did it go?
Avoid them is what I do
Sometimes you need to go through them.
@@JamesTravis I don't really use them in my everyday driving because I don't live near any.
And me 😅
And me 😅
I’m planning on taking my kids out tomorrow (schools on strike) and where we want to go there’s one I might need to use. I find these so confusing, with trying to follow your lane markings and not other ones. I’m going to see if I can find another route 😂.
Was a helpful post though Travis, I’ll keep this in mind if I end up on it by accident.
Love your videos, I passed a year ago and I'm still scared to go anywhere far away in case I come across a big roundabout, 😢
Thank you for watching. Hopefully there will be a time when you try the bigger roundabouts. Safe driving
I've been driving for a few months now and am the same. I just booked a refresher driving lesson to go over these as I was never taught them. I think it's worth doing as you can't avoid them forever.
My question when you finish at second exit why have you styled in the middle ? I didn’t get the point
It is because the spiral lanes continue round and eventually work to the left to exit at the next exit. Hope that helps.
Hi where are u based? Do you instruct in Birmingham
I only help in Milton Keynes.
What to do if spiral roundabout controlled by traffic lights,
Right turn 3rd exit, do I need to signal right even if I follow in the road markings?
I would keep the right signal on untill at least three quarters round.
@@JamesTravis thanks,
God blessed..
I hate roundabouts 😂
I love them
Please can you explain the signalling when turning 3rd exit it more detail?!! It's something I can't grasp despite trying to!
I keep thinking that if you are indicating right whilst following the correct lane for the 3rd exit, won't the cars in the right lane (who want to exit 4th exit, U Turn) think that you want to change lanes and merge into theirs?
I'm probably overthinking this as this is a big problem of mine 🙃
Thanks in advance for any help 🙏
Other cars won’t be thinking you are trying to get into there lane as long as you change to left signal just before you intend to exit off.
Is there any way you know you're coming up to a spiral roundabout before you approach (like do they have different signs)?
Usually if the roundabout is big, then it could be a spiral roundabout. But the giveaway are the lanes crossing over.
Spiral roundabouts are horrible; so badly thought out.
If you want to turn back up the road you came down, it is impossible to not cut someone up.
They also rely on the road markings not being worn out and they're different to the 'proper' roundabouts.
The 'proper' roundabouts are that you stay closest to the centre of the roundabout until you wish to exit, then you go to the left lane after the exit before yours.
It is easier when road markings are painted
I think its very difficult for first timer to get it correct and if one gets this on driving test most probably going to fail. Its easy to drive when you know the road, everything in your head and you position urself correctly, But first timer on such road and getting it right is quite difficult.
It takes practice
You'll only fail if you go the wrong way to where the lane is taking you, the key is, if you are about to cross any adjacent lines to your left or right, without knowing why you're crossing them... then something is wrong so stay with the lane, wherever it ends up. Everyone has trouble with spirals novice or experienced.
@@Grahamvfr I am still not sure if one will pass going into wrong place when told to go to some other turn. I think there is so much confusion and i have not seen anybody giving any definite answer.
Different instructors teach differently and nobody covers all the cases,
People spend thousands of pounds to end up getting failed. And on the test examiner deliberately bringing to some difficult junctions, roundabouts.
I still see any easier way to pass the test on unknown roads easily when examiner is hell bend to fail you.
@@arjunpandav7077 examiners are just people like you and I, its not personal otherwise nobody would pass, they don't make up the routes they are pre set.
I can assure you that if you go the wrong way (correctly) there is no box on the test sheet to fail you on. Having said all that, undoubtedly you will feel more confident on easy roads as we all will. Good luck whenever your test is.
Better trying to learn them than avoidance because driver will need to use spiral at some point.
Thats the best way. Keep at it. Safe driving
How about if there is a HGV or lorry when yo approach a spiral round about? Do they always stay on the right even if they go staright ahead?
They will attempt to do the same.
At 4:30 if you wanted to take the 3rd exit what would you do if that car on your left blocks you from moving into the middle lane
Drop off the gas a bit and they will go ahead of you, then look to move in.
I DREAD spiral roundabouts. Failed my driving test because I went on the wrong lane on one of them. They're just so confusing
They do take practice.
Great video thank you Travis! Got my test in Bletchley coming up very soon so this really helps 👍🏻👍🏻
Best of luck!
Great video, I've been avoiding that particular roundabout. I'll give it a go 😁
Good luck
I wish I saw this video before so I can ask my question I have test in 2 hours and this is the only problem I have
Just seen your posts. Hope your driving test went well
Sir i drift around these types of roundabouts is that allowed?? I get people cussing me and swearing i get really upset and get flustered and go around again for another drift 😢
Unfortunately you need to stick to your lanes on roundabouts. Safe driving.
Very helpful ,and I will watch this again until it becomes more familiar for when I get into this scenario for real
Safe driving
GOSH, I wish I had this video before my exam in Milton Keynes, I did this router :( I am right with 3 exits but the 4 exits were a bit confusing, I am gonna do my next one here in Aberdeen which is going to be much easier I presume. Thank you very much for this simple and thorough explanation!
Good luck on your next test.
Milton Keynes aka roundabout city.
Should we use indicator in spiral roundabout
Yes to tell other road users where you are going.
Do you have any videos on the redmoor roundabout in mk?
I have bits of it. The problem at the moment is half is closed off because of road works.
that car overtaking me on the left hand side at 4:42 is what scares the hell out of me on these roundabout. I feel like i would have drifted left into his/her car at that point.
Hopefully the video will help other drivers to be aware of drivers in the wrong lanes. Good luck with your driving.
@@JamesTravis lets hope so. I also realized my question was answered in the comments previously. Love the videos :)
2:10 whats that roundabout on that sign Thanks
At 2.10 you are approaching the Roman roundabout.

Hi Travis sorry to say few of my friends failed when they used right lane when enter right at roundabout they want you to enter on the left always 😮
Oh, is that in the UK? If so where?
Hi in Edinburgh
This is very helpful mate . Appreciate your time and help
Glad it helped
These roundabouts are so confusing to me
They do take lots of practice
They do help alot. Have you any advice for poorly marked spiral roundabouts were the line are faded
Be extra careful. Try and watch out for other cars drifting into your path.
