I remember seeing Bob and Etta in the pits at Indy changing motors in the heat and humidity....3times! (in the grass, no fancy trailer with crew)Theirs been some really great drag racers in it's history, but Bob has to be one of the GREATEST!
He was definitely the car to watch in Pro Stock. Amazing record and amazing family. He took on the guys with big money. The guys with 20 crew members on their team. Including teams with tons of outside help. The Gliddens had to work their butts off to stay ahead.
He dominated with the Cleveland, so they changed the rules to 500 in³. He dominated with the BOSS 429, and the DRCE was created and allowed. The man and his family/crew were so dedicated that the entire drag world was doing everything they could to slow him down. No matter how many more wins other guys rack up, Bob Glidden will forever be THE GOAT in Pro Stock Drag Racing.
If the schedule had as many events as it did after Bob retired, there is no telling how many more wins he would have had. Also being the only guy to have rules just to slow him down prevented many more wins. And that little nitrous thing the Dodge Boys had for a couple of years cost at least another championship. If he was in a Chevy there would have been any Glidden only rules.
And what do you deem as stupid and inappropriate? I knew Bob personally and documented over the decades many of his career happenings. Certainly anyone who knew Bob, clearly understood if he didn't want to answer a question or thought it was stupid - he would let you know.
