  • This presentation starts with a short video film looking at Sowerby Bridge from Norland in 2016. The air is clear, the buildings are clean, there are many trees and lots of greenery. It wasn’t always like this. In 1972 I took photographs and cine films of an Industrial Landscape. These are some of my images. There are trains in some of these films, please focus your gaze on the mills in the Landscape that the trains are passing through. Music by Kevin MacLeod from You Tube Audio Library. Please feel free to share this.

Hi David, what a wonderfully atmospheric piece of film you have put together here. So many of those fine buildings have now gone from the landscape. Also of course that type of diesel traction, and the semaphore signalling and infrastructure of the railways. Luckily you had the foresight to record it all whilst it was still there. Thank goodness that you did. Where would we be without people like yourself, and a number of others, who have documented life and the environment of the town, or area, where they grew up or lived.
Indeed, were it not for the invention of the camera, then we could only speculate how people lived in Victorian and Edwardian times .
I very much enjoyed watching your film and looking at the photographs from a past age .
Thank you for sharing them with us David.

Hi David, I wonder is it possible to get copies of the
    photos at 9.03, 10.46 & 10.51. I am currently exploring a bit of family
history, who hail from Sowerby Bridge. My grandfather was William Bates and
they had connections to a number of mills in the area. Obviously the one at 9.03
and I believe the other one is Canal Mills. Nice bit of classic traction in
    your videos. Regards Chris

Hi David, I am wondering if you could help me and my wife? We are trying to find an old photo of our house and seem to find one anywhere. We are trying to get an image of the old Freemasons lodge, now on eaglescliffe on beech road. Do you have any idea where I could find one please?

You could try asking Steve Gee. You could join the Facebook Group "OLD PHOTOS OF HALIFAX, WEST YORKSHIRE, Part 2" and post a request on there. If Steve doesn't have a photo, someone else might have one.

What happened with all those factories? ..did the people lost their jobs? ...because it seems that most of those factories doesn't exist anymore. ...

The factories closed, many of them were demolished, some of them were converted into apartments. The people who worked in them lost their jobs.
