Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas.” In that context, it was compared to similar lines in Utena and Haibane. But only Utena's version is 100% convincingly a reference, in my opinion. The metaphor's otherwise straightforward enough that multiple people could have hit on it independently. Sora no Woto's angel skeleton is surely a reference to Angel's Egg though, I hadn't thought of that! I look forward to your colleague's Kingdom Hearts video. That's one helluva game series! I don't know about others, but I usually like long-form analytic content more when I've seen/read/watched the thing in question?

I had to do a double take for this comment because I swear I thought you were talking about "Shoujo Cossette" which is the anime adaptation of Les Misérables, so for a second there I honestly thought you were just straight up trying to tell me to watch Les Mis and I was so confused XD. i really appreciate that you spoke so in depth about interpretation. i had a friend who saw nope and loved it and asked me to go see it, so i did, and i thought it was incredible, but when i explained my interpretation of the ending he called me stupid and said that my interpretation was wrong. which... like. man first of all ouch, second. how can an interpretation be wrong? the inherent nature of interpreting art is so deeply personal that even if two people come to the same conclusion about its literal meaning it will still bring them vastly different emotions. no two interpretations are exactly alike because no two people are exactly alike. anyway, apologies for the long comment but i really enjoyed this video despite never having watched this movie and i have a lot of thoughts lol

@@TheMissingLettr thank you for indulging me lmao and as for my interpretation i considered the ending more ambiguous than my friend did. i left the theater feeling like it was more melancholy than triumphant because my interpretation of it was that OJ may not have survived after all. the shot of him at the end was so distant it read to me as more of a memory of tragedy that had been lost in the spectacle. i understand that context can point to the fact that he likely did actually survive, but i still think my interpretation that the ending was ambiguous wasn't wrong especially considering jordan peele's statement on the matter. so sorry to derail but i appreciate the chance to discuss!

The film in my eyes is about the danger in spectacle, how we pursue spectacle even when it comes at great personal risk, hence the monkey going berserk scene. So I always figured OJ survived because he gave up on getting the oprah shot and just decided the spectacle wasn't worth it. There's a dead/still frame before the drawings shift. I don't think this takes away from your Snow White thoughts w/r/t the forest though. If you saw a version that was all on 1s then I might wonder whether it's been edited/interpolated. (The clips you use throughout look the exact same as the video I was taking frame-by-frame though, so that's probably not the case)

After double checking the footage, you're correct, it is in fact on 2's except for in very specific moments where short bursts of 1's are used, and even then, I could have gotten incorrect counts there since it didn't look to me like much changed. I think the reason I assumed otherwise (with such confidence in fact that didn't feel the need to double check before hitting upload) was because most anime projects are even lower than 2's in terms of frame counts, with 3's, 4's, and even occasionally 6's in there, too. Angel's Egg is more consistent with movement than that, so just from looking at it and comparing it to Akira, where 24fps moments were used frequently, but not exclusively, I assumed I knew what I was looking at from experience frame counting other films. Either way, it's not unlikely that 1's are in Angel's Egg somewhere, but I shouldn't have made it sound like the entire film was done that way without going in and making sure that was the case.
Genuinely a great retrospective video. I love your format and form of thinking, I see it as unique and inspiring. You went piece by piece collectively journeying alongside us with intricate editing skills to convey your interpretation. Only thing I had an issue watching was the apologies before referring to biblical text and considering it "offensive." I believe if you are going to use something so compelling for your argument or even in your content, if you are not bashing on anything, then don't worry about offending others and especially be ready to stand your ground in your perspective whilst simply being open minded. No need to apologize for something you haven't done.

I started to think something similar about "A Canticle for Leibowitz." It appears that their faith might be futile or misplaced, but the recording character of "The Wandering Jew" alone represents that there will still be a second coming of Jesus entirely because of reason for the character's extended life according to the legend. To me it's about keeping faith no matter how bleak. I should probably wait to finish your video before commenting again though.

I was out and so mad... That's a PIVOTAL character moment not only for the boys, but Ed and Hohenheim when he returns... Honestly the American adaptation would have fit better with the original pilot manga about the young boy who found the death note, just age him up and that's basically Light from Netflix Note... Just not handing on the expectation that Death Note holds, but as a seperate inspired work.
I agree, I think the worst aspect of Netflix Note is that they named the main character "Light". If they hadn't you could argue it's a movie based on the pilot, which fans would honestly probably have really liked. I think the Watari bit is stupid, because obviously Watari was supposed to be a codename and not his real name, but I like most of the rest of the film. I think it's interesting, and I love Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. If nothing else, Ryuk is flawless in Netflix Note. What really bothers me, and the reason I defend it so much, is that people really bullied the director over this, and he made it with genuine passion. Poor guy just wanted to do right by something he loves, and the fanbase was so ruthless to him that he had to delete his social media after it released. Given the work he put in, and that Netflix Note isn't a soulless project like Bebop or FMA, I just think the guy deserves to know he didn't do a terrible job with the concept.

But sadly, death note isn't that kind of story, it's like the dune adaptations... Yes the director truely loved the work, but at least the old directors from dune realized before it was released that they fucked up, this director was far to confident and that can trigger more toxic fans which isn't fair to him... No one deserves that, I just find stories like these and even Battle Angel Alita is all just geared towards brain-dead American audiences.
