The sequence "If I Needed someone" + "Tangerine" was killer
"Carve your number on my wall, and maybe you will get a call from me..."
Was that Harrison's FIRST original to make it on a Beatles album?
@@StreetPreacherr Yes!! I remember watching Scorcese's Living in a Material World doc and that's when i heard the song for the first time (:
@@StreetPreacherr No, ‘Don’t Bother Me’ was the first Harrison original on a Beatles album.
This is what the Holy Grail looks and sounds like 🤩❤️👍! Love that you dropped in a little of “Tangerine” 🥰.
It's nice when he plays songs that were played on the same guitar.
What a great sound
it is easy to hear why the word "jangle" became current around this time. Nice to hear Tangerine, an old fave of mine.
That guitar had a great sound! Great job Lemmo! Thanks Jen and Gigi!
Some things to note on this 360 style 12 string. The output is both mono and Rick o sound stereo. Which on the 12 string makes for a big difference in the sound when going through stereo amps - neck pick up through one and bridge through the other. This is definitely a 360 although early because the 330 is only mono. Also note the blend knob which allows the player to blend the pickups in the mono signal when the toggle is in the middle position. Also note how wide the skunk stripe is on the back of the neck. Not sure exactly why but could be double truss. And last note is that Rick strings their 12s with the heavier string first (the opposite of most) which allows the twangy higher octave to be a teeny bit time delayed.
All twelve string guitars will produce a slight delay between the individual strings in each pair when the pair is struck. The string that is delayed is dependent on the direction of the strum. The reason Rickenbacker 12s are strung the way they are is simply because F.C. Hall wanted his guitars to be different to all other 12 string guitars available at the time.
The Rickenbacker stringing configuration gives the RIC 12 guitars a more balanced and well rounded 12 string sound because the Mids are accentuated more on the down stroke of a strum or a string pair pluck.
People forget that the first Rickenbacker 12 string electric guitar (the first 1963 360/12) was actually strung in the traditional manner. It was basically a prototype and was used by Suzi Arden.
The first Rickenbacker 12 string produced with the Rickenbacker stringing configuration was the second Rickenbacker 360/12 manufactured. That guitar was the one gifted to George Harrison.
The next Rickenbacker 12 produced was the 625/12. It is thought to have been originally strung in the Rickenbacker manner from the factory. It is the guitar that Mike Campbell purchased in 1977 (The one shown on the cover of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers album "Damn The Torpedos"). The general concensus is that both Mike and Tom thought that all 12 string guitars should be strung in the traditional manner so Mike modified his guitar accordingly. Interestingly, when Tom Petty was invited to do a RIC 12 signature model, he came up with the Rickenbacker 660/12 TP which he decided should be strung in the Rickenbacker manner. Go figure.
Never ceases to amaze with his talent ....... beautiful.
Iconic sound,wow!
I just love the glossy fret boards on the Ricks.
What a magical sound. Great playing again Michael.
Jingly jangly. Love it.
Beautiful Sounds coming out of that guitar,Well Done
I love the way Rickenbackers sound but not crazy about how they play.
What a great voice the guitar has. Wow!!!
8 Miles high sounds so fine on that Rick
Really enjoyed your playing here Michael I have a 93 in black love playing over the bridge PU. Chimes!
Lovely specimen. A 360/12 OS (Original Style / Old Style) model with the sharp fin body. Rickenbacker continued to produce 360/12 OS instruments mainly as custom orders up until the late 1960s. The key indicators this is a 360/12 are the shark tooth inlays on the fretboard and the dual output jacks.
1:50 ... If I Needed Someone ... On the original recording George uses the second Rickenbacker 12 string that he received, either a late 1964 or early 1965 360/12 that had the modern rounded fin body. It later "disappeared" and in late 2024 is still deemed to be missing. The retailer never kept a record of the guitar's serial number. Rickenbacker has said five of those guitars could be candidates for George's guitar based on their shipping records. To date, only one of those five is known but can't be confirmed as THE guitar.
As an aside, John played the rhythm guitar part on a Fender Stratocaster. The end result is one of the brightest, jangliest, chimiest (!) songs that The Beatles produced ... a great homage to The Byrds.
6:40 ... Eight Miles High ..... :)
Cheers.
That guitar needs to be played through a Vox AC30 for maximum jangle. I'll let it go this time.....
wow ! THAT was fun ! thank you.
Rick12 & ML = WOW!
ah, tangerine is the first song i can think of when i heard that jangeling sound
To die for
Beauty with a big sound!
Welcome to the JANGLE 😎
Maybe best one yet
It certainly has that 60’s-70’s sound 👍🏻👍🏻
Byrds, Eight Miles High, Roger McQuinn, Great sounding
Cool guitar 🎸😎
The Roger Mc Guinn's favourite guitar!...
What are Majestic sounding instrument I wish I were 50 years younger and 100,000 richer and thank you for the birds at the end house baby Grace doing
Excellent as usual Michael I could listen all night hey jen
You made that guitar sound great.
I want it !
🔥🔥🔥🙋🏼♂🤘🏻
The Edge from U2 uses these often. He has at least 3, but he’s known to keep one as a primary and then have multiple spares. Over the past 15 years or so, he’s seemed to rely on a MapleGlo model and he started using the Rickenbacker 360-12 circa 1988. Ironically, it doesn’t sound always sound like a 12-string, but his tech confirmed he only uses the 12 string models. He’s used it on about 20 recordings over the years.
I wanted a 360/12 very badly as a teen. I suppose I still do 30 years later, but I doubt I'll get one. If I get a 12-string electric model, I'll probably make it a Danelectro double-neck with a bass in the lower position (if there's one for sale when I enter the market).
What equipment are u playing through. It sounds great
Harrison’s first original on an album was ‘Don’t Bother Me’
I want 1
Guy at the end is playing the chords of 8 Miles High
My god, Beatles songs were so good
Bella/Linda.😱✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️
Though in D, George capo'd his 360 at 7th to play A chord shape D for the unique sound and jangle of that song. 360-12's should be a cheap lease for anyone who wants to play and record one. I owned one but they are so distinct and one trick case queens that it last barely a year in the herd because you just can't use that sound much. Ironically John's 325 you COULD use a lot. But, how much would you pay to play one for a week? $100? 🎸
A little Ace , cracked mirror?
Paul Kantner
If you aren’t using a compressor you’re dialed in as can be. The slimmer single bound McGuinn 360 suits smaller players.
Michael, what amp were you playing with the Ric 12-string?
You guys missed the most important control on the guitar- the small knob is a blend control!!!
I had the Epiphone 6/12 double neck. Electric 12 strings are unruly amplified. Only works for a small subset of tunes
Someone should tell the BJM that. They seem to have missed the memo.
Wow. Wish I could make my Ric 12s ring out like that. What amp are you playing through?
Likely a Super Reverb
Yes, very rare RIC. Not many mapleglo 360/12 OS models produced in ‘68!
@benallmark9671 Lemmo's go-to. Funny how the Fender and a Vox both jangle - just a *different* jangle.
@@roughcutguitars They all jangle. But only the Rickenbackers Jangle AND CHIME !!!
Max Jangle and Chime ...
1/ Toaster Pickups and
2/ Serious Compression. JangleBox highly recommended
3/ Flatwound strings
4/ Tune the instrument down by at least a half tone ... and preferably a full tone
5/ Vox AC 30 Amplifier
6/ Play chords or arpeggios rather than single note lead breaks
Some also wire the electronics with the 0.0047 capacitors in the tone circuit but YMMV.
👍✌❤😎
Dude at the end looks like Senior Citizen Gumby
What is the first song he played??
"If I Needed Someone".
Shoulda brought in Roger McGuinn to demo that.
Where’s the Byrds man?? 😄😄
The guy at the end literally plays 8 Miles High and Mr Tambourine Man by the Byrds along with The Waiting by Tom Petty.
If I hear “RickenBOCKer one more time…🙄
Same
So close to sitar.
Isn’t that really a 330. I have a fireglo 1967 12 string with no binding and dot inlays
No it's a 360os - the original 360 was the same shape as the 330 but double bound with those fancier inlays, they changed it to the more rounded body shape in 1965 but you could still custom order the old style 360 for quite a while afterwards
@@bojackhorseman5367 Thanks. I’ve got a 1967 Deluxe 365 in fireglo and the 67 330. Both different body shapes. Also have a 4001 in Azureglo
Yes, definitely a 360/12 Old Style. The giveways are the shark tooth inlay fret markers and the dual output jacks (one for mono, one for Ric-O-Sound). Rickenbacker continued to produce 360/12 Old style models for custom orders up until the late 1960s.
I HAVE A BLACK 360-12
THAT PLAYS IN TUNE
CARLOS GUITARLOS 90042 USA
You forgot the Roger McGuinn! You can't have a 12-string mapleglow Ric and not have Roger--
Is there a guitar with a DISTINCTIVE sound than a Rickenbacker?
I think you meant more distinctive…..
Fender Stratocaster produces a pretty distinctive sound ... especially the out of phase bridge and middle pickup tone.
@@ckelly5141 yes
@@karmicselling4252 Which 5-way position is that?
I can't believe he didn't say a word about the passing of legendary jazz blues guitarist John Mayall.
For all I know maybe he didn't hear about it. I'm surprised Norman didn't make a statement about it.
It's probably coming.
This video wasn't recorded today.
@@russpennekamp5149
Yes, that makes sense.
@@russpennekamp5149
Excellent point.
this sound would have george harrison rolling in his grave!!! Why are you making a video of such terrible sounding rick guitar!!!!
Get Angela Petrilli back...I don't want to see this guy!!!
I guess you’re not too crazy about a great guitarist here?
@@ckelly5141 I like Angela Petrilli playing telecastor's more, Lemo is a brilliant player
I hate these kinda guitars. No offense.
Come on man! You can't hate something and then say no offense!!??
It's a geetarr.
Then don't buy one
@@saltpeter500 I won't
The Rickenbacker 3xx and 6xx model lines are very polarising. People either love them, hate them, or are totally mystified by them. Few other brands evoke such mixed feelings. Personally, I 'm not a great fan of MapleGlo. I think it is the least aesthetically pleasing RIC color. FireGlo is the classic one for me. And JetGlo is timeless.
Love 'em or hate 'em. It;s hard to deny that Rickenbacker guitars are not just musical instruments, they are works of art. And the only instruments that for decades have remained true to the "Made In U.S.A." ethos.
I have to use a chromatic tuner to tune my 1973 Epiphone 12.
I have 70 year old ears.
