  • Here's highlights of charismatic Malian superstar Omou Sangaré performing at FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE LOUISIANE on April 27 2024. She's backed by her incredibly funky and adventurous band including background vocalists Kandy Guira and Emma Lamadji, virtuoso kamele ngoni player Abou Diarra of Mali, bassist Elise Blanchard of Paris, electric guitarist Julien Pestre of Benin, keyboardist Alexandre Millet of Paris, and drummer Mike Dibo. She performed at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on April 26 and the up the road in Lafayette the next day. Their Congo Square / Jazz Fest set was to me a knockout performance, the highlight of the festival. I later discovered there was little if any footage of this remarkable line available on line, so I took my DSLR to Lafayette the next night and shot 30 minutes of Omou's amazing set. (The other 30 minutes I put down my camera and just grooved, sorry! And I was surrounded by dancers left and right, so further apologies when camera jostles now and then.) Special stand out musicians include Abou Diarra of Mali who has been called "the Jimi Hendrix of the kamele ngoni", and Elise Blanchard who IMHO channels the spirit of legendary US bassist Tina Weymouth. (The driving, joyous funk of the encore song is reminiscent of "Stop Making Sense.") It is my pleasure to have shot and edited this for you, I hope you enjoy it. Oumou please come back!!
