That man was a force of nature. James Brown once said about someone and I paraphrase 'Some guys play what they can but this guy plays what he wants'. Joey Defrancesco definitely fell in to the latter category. RIP Joey D

One of the best, in Jazz there is no best - it's all "same league different division.
There are just too many great players including the King of the Hammond B-3, the great Jimmy Smith.
The 1st time I heard Joey was on the album with the great Danny Gatton - known as the "best unknown guitar player" on their Relentless album.
Take a listen of 2 greats playing.
At the time, for me it was like Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery - inspired - but clearly the artistry of 2 great players.

@Tero James why would any "free thinking" person ever want to go an invisible heaven, spending an eternity groveling and begging to the Jewish god of Abraham and Isaac that monitors every thought you have?
For any "free thinking" person that would be hell and I would not wish that on Joey D. or any person.
Luckily, an invisible heaven (allegedly seen only by dead people) is just an ancient, primitive, superstitious middle eastern fable that originated in Iraq, then Mesopotamia.
Same with Adam and Eve and the garden of Edin which was also in Iraq, then Mesopotamia where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers meet.
Even Noah was an Iraqi, then Sumeria, in the southern part of Mesopotamia where the Hebrews plagiarized the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh to the Noah fable.
And is why they used Mt. Ararat and *not* the 100 plus other mountains twice the height.
If you want heaven on earth, you can find your utopia today by immigrating to North Korea where you are monitored 24 hours a day.

    • @casyatbat
      @casyatbat 2 года назад

@Tero James _"Suppose you're right concerning your beliefs."_
_" What if your opinions and outlook on life was absolutely right."_
I have no beliefs or faith, at least concerning the supernatural.
Either something is real or it is not.
Either there is evidence or there is not any evidence.
As far as science, reality and reason is concerned all things die.
There is no evidence of any supernatural "after life".
_"One of the things is still a mystery is what's beyond death."_
As far as science and reason is concerned, there is nothing beyond death, and any reasonable person should not rely on ancient, primitive, superstitious middle eastern fables.
You know like the Jewish account of genesis, where an invisible god (allegedly seen only by dead people) created a flat earth in a dome with water above and below the dome.
Also described in the incredibly brutal immoral Jewish 2nd commandment where an angry god punishes 4 generations for the sins of the father for the crime of not believing that god exist due to no evidence.
_"So far it's a theory but never solved. What is your educated guess beyond death?"_
A theory, maybe since all theories are conjecture needing no evidence.
But does not come up even remotely close to a hypothesis.
And never a "scientific theory" since all scientific theories must have evidence and that evidence must be repeatable and predictable.
Here is you something for you to think about.
Every person allegedly having a conversation with the Jewish of Abraham was alone with the exception of the Iraqi Adam and Eve - and Balaam and his talking donkey. Since the donkey could talk and had a conversation the the Jewish god, I am counting him as a person.
      That's it.
When that god commanded Abraham to murder his son, he was alone, no witnesses.
When a god commanded Noah (who was 600 years old at that time) to build an ark, so he could brutally murder a planet by drowning, he was alone no witnesses.
When a commanded Moses in Numbers 31, to kill all the boys, kill every woman who had slept with a man, but save yourselves every girl who had never slept with a man for the subsequent rape parties, he was alone no witnesses.
So that is your religion - a hearsay religion - where every person, less Adam & Eve and Balaam and his talking donkey, were alone, no witnesses.
That is what you are giving your life to - a hearsay Iraqi religion, then Mesopotamia.

To let a beautiful creative soul like this man to pass and allow people for whom malevolence is a byword to carry on 'picking off mankind in order to make more room for them is frankly beyond me. Shocking and miserable news. I feel so fortunate to have seen him last month in a packed house in north Portugal. A joyful performance, full of empathy for the audience. He's an entertainer who really knew how to connect. He started the gig on tenor, switched to trumpet, blitzed it on keys and when he sang an immaculate and moving ballad dedicated to his wife, I asked myself 'Is there anything he can't do?' I was only waiting for the dance routine... What a delightful man and out-of-this world musician. People like him are rare but they give the rest of us all so much, and help us keep going. Hammond Organ Jazz Maestro Joey DeFrancesco has passed away at the age of 51. I have followed Joey for decades. He was recognized as the musician "carrying the torch" for the Hammond sound from the early pioneers - Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Shirley Scott, and Dr. Lonnie Smith among many others.
I have heard him play dozens of times. He was a regular at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, but our paths crossed in many places over the years including in Japan.
    Two quick stories:
In 2016, Joey had just released his Christmas Album called “Home For The Holidays”, and he was booked in his usual spot over the Thanksgiving weekend in Chicago. The first night, he proffered these CD’s to the audience. “I’ll be back near the door, come by and say hi. If you bring your friend Andrew Jackson, we’ll get you a signed copy of the CD”. Never one to let a good heckling opportunity go to waste, I shouted at Joey - “But Joey, this is the Land of Lincoln!”. He looked right at me, waited for the audience laughter to subside, and said “well, Lincoln won’t be freeing the CD’s tonight”. I HAVE that signed CD, which he gifted to me gratis.
This past June, Joey was again at the Jazz Showcase. I attended two nights, as usual. Joey was one of the first “big-time” Jazz acts to return to touring after the Covid-19 winter. On the way out night two, I chatted to Wayne Segel, Jazz Showcase owner. I noted that in all the many times I’d heard Joey perform, I don’t think I ever heard him do the same tune twice. So deep was his command of the Jazz and modern songbook he could pull up anything and make it swing.
    51. Way too soon.

I first saw Joey in 1988 at Blues Alley in D.C. The late, great Michael Brecker was playing with Mike Stern, Jeff Andrews and Victor Lewis. Kenny Kirkland (who was scheduled to play piano and was notorious for missing gigs) was a no-show for rehearsal. I was friends with and a quasi-roadie for the opening act, Secrets; a group out of my home of Richmond, VA; the group that featured Carter Beauford. As we were bringing in gear, Mike Stern was on stage noodling. I had just met him in a few weeks prior in Boston while I was studying at Berklee. As he and I were getting reacquainted, Brecker was running around trying to find a replacement for Kenny. He remembered that he saw this cat in upstate New York and found his contact information. It was Joey DeFrancesco! Long story short, he managed to make arrangements for Joey to take the train from New York and made it just in time for them to go on stage.... no warm-up.... no rehearsal.... nothing! What transpired that night was nothing short of musical genius! Joey stole the show!!! He was 17 at the time and people were absolutely mesmerized! His solos were articulate and spellbindingly creative. We were witnessing the birth of a legend! I am completely stunned and saddened to hear of his passing. The world has lost a true master; the likes of which we will probably never see again. For musicians, such as myself, losing such a gifted artist as Joey tears at the fabric of our being. And as unjust and unfair as his passing seems, we must be grateful for having the opportunity to be witness to the artistry and talent that Joey shared with us. Joey's incredible legacy will be treasured by many forever and he leaves behind an amazing blueprint for future generations of jazz pianists and musicians, in general. My heart and my prayers go out to his wife, Gloria and to his family. You were taken far too soon, Joey D.......... far too soon! Rest in Peace, brother!

I had the honor to play with him when I was in a college starter program in highschool. Was in awe to watch him play, he played for keeps everytime, always full of passion, a true master and virtuouso. Sad to know I will never experience his live music again. Such a loss, but quite the legacy. RIP Joey D

Joey’s music was so positive, swinging, and grooving. I cannot forget the time when I saw him live in LA. The legends pass too soon.. Chick Corea, Roy Hargrove, Kenny Kirkland, Mulgrew Miller, Michael Brecker to name a few. May Joey rest in peace with music! Your music will live in our hearts. Thanks for the great music!

What a shame!!! ...I only just discovered him about a month ago, in a video from 1988, with Miles, and was looking forward to hearing more from him.
Yes, he died much too young. ...A very talented multi-musician.
Hope you are doing well down there in Mexico, Jazz Video Guy!

It is really tragic. Jazz has lost so many too soon. I wonder if Joey’s girth contributed to his demise. I always feared for his health. God bless him and give his family peace. He gave joy to everyone who heard him play and to hear him live was a religious transcendent experience and to have the privilege of speaking to him was to know how truly humble sensitive and modest a great artist can be. He was a gentle giant who changed music and through that music changed lives.
RIP JOEY and THANK YOU FOR LIVING AMONG US
