Hey guys, a couple comments have notified me that the first 2 trainers in eterna forest can be battled individually(as opposed to what I thought had to be a double battle) by talking to one of them at an angle. This means that no risks are necessary there.
Congrats man! This play through felt so skillfull. You studied the AI, you played around your opponent's pokemon and stats, and you didn't 100 all of your pokemon
Love to see some Pokemon Ranger references pop up and the naming scheme is great as a result! Also I loved Murph being a Teddiursa -- such a shame Slowpoke isn't available in this run because that would have been perfect
You're not the only one to run into the thick fat issue. One of the running theories is that if it's possible for a pokemon to have thick fat or another ability, the AI acts like it doesn't know. Then, once the ai figures out it has thick fat, it acts accordingly. Purugly can also have own tempo as an ability. So the AI acts on the assumption that it might have the other ability and when it learns it doesn't, acts accordingly.... we think. You're not the first person to run into that issue. Great video though. Very entertaining. As always.
I'm just curious what makes everyone think the AI supposed to know your pokemon has Thick Fat. I know they read your types but I don't remember even the good AI trainers ever reading your ability unless it's one of those abilities that's announced or if the ability snuffs a move. Gale of Darkness was the only exception where they definitely read your abilities first.
My theory is a stretch, but I think it might have to do with the fact that Pokémon on a type specialists team are more likely to use moves of that type. Probably not true, but it’s an idea
@DisplayThisOkay more often then not its can be seen, as pokemon with abilities like lightning rid and water absorb the ai will avoid even if it would be super effective otherwise
I don't remember whose run it was but it was theorized that the AI essentially acts without any knowledge of the ability your pokemon has if it can have more than one ability. It then uses the information given afterwards and damage stats to re-adjust it's decisions. That might be why Flint's pokemon opted for fire moves against your Purugly since it went without knowing if it had thick fat or own tempo.
The way I think the AI works is that if it "predicts" a swap it is more likely to attack with a move that might affect your Mons (especially with High Jump Kicks heavy recoil if it goes into a Ghost type) and Cynthia uses this to her advantage to get up a free Swords Dance if the AI thinks youll swap or heal. It gets better and better as you progress though the game, as you said, and it really does show
Must be why Garchomp decided to SD in front of a Roserade, that or it didn't see a kill. Doesn't matter though, since I got the opportunity to Stun Spore it.
@@nal4026 Yea it can. If you're at a disadvantage you're likely to swapp (stuff like type disadvantage, it knowing you don't have moves to hit or properly take it out, or you're at low hp and might heal or swap), it then decides you're likely to swap and sets up a swords dance for example (this is predicting a swap..humans do it and it's basic enough it can be coded into an AI).
@@vibingone101 yeah Guardian Signs was good too but it’s also been a decade since that came out. I want to see some gen 5 and later pokemon in a ranger game!
Regarding Dual Chop's 90 accuracy, Machop can have the ability No Guard, which will make it always hit. The dusk ball would guarantee catching the Machop. Unfortunately, Machop won't always have No Guard, so it isn't a perfect strategy.
Whilst I love these videos/challenges, it’d be nice to see another nuzlocke on the channel, it probably wouldn’t be as popular as these because RUclips is flooded with nuzlockes, but it would be nice to see regardless
Seeing Purugly used is pretty interesting. Most of the time the only thing people know about Purugly is that Mars has it and it’s faster than Latios. Cool run!
I could never have the patience to even attempt a run like that 😅 Also, I absolutely love all those dry humor moments, especially “rival battles come first I guess…”
Awesome run!! I was planning on doing it too, but it looks like you beat me to it lol. Guess I'll still try, but I'll add the additional restriction that i can't use any of the pokemon you used. Guess that'll make up for being second. Probably will also allow starly line because i don't think it can be done without them
Great run! Something is definitely weird with how the AI handles Thick Fat in this game - I've seen someone try to bait a Wood Hammer/EQ from Candice's Abomasnow with a Thick Fat Azumarill and have it just Blizzard on the switch anyway when the other two moves were kills and Blizzard wasn't, so its definitely either not factoring it in or doubling instead of halving. Although in your case I would assume the fighting moves would have still done more damage to you even if the fire move's power was doubled in some of the cases which makes it stranger.
Damn what a nice run! Meanwhile im still trying to get a good Team up for the Pokemon league, which Im stuck on since a good month or so. Cynthia is my main problem I guess, but only because im just learning about how all of the iv and ev's work. Never cared bout my stats to much but I should've lol
When I was in the forest i figured out that you can skip all the double battles by just slowly walking up to the one to the right and pressing a, then you should be able to avoid the double battle
While I didn't recognize Kellyn due to my name in my Shadows of Almia playthrough being my own, I did recognize Keith and Barlow immediately. Pokémon Rangers : Shadows of Almia is the theme of your nicknames. Man, I loved that game.
I’m not sure if anyone knows, but if you can change the date, then restart the switch. You won’t get locked out! That was the only way I could get driftloon lol.
I always do a Normal Only run in each game after it's released and Purugly probably put in the most work out of any I've used because it hits hard and fast. Only things that have outperformed it in my eyes so far is later gen Kangaskhan (OP Mega form), Obstagoon (Obstruct + massive move pool + Guts) and recently, both forms of Ursaluna (Dear god, they hit like trains) Edit: don't really count the Gen 1 normal titans or Gen 2 Snorlax because they are too busted for their Gens.
It could be that the Infernape saw a kill with Fire Punch due to it thinking that Thick Fat causes double damage from fire, rather than half. In that case, there was no reason to lower its defenses with Close Combat if Fire Punch was a kill anyway. On the other hand, as someone else noted already, you wouldn't expect trainers to be immediately able to distinguish your ability if your pokemon can have 2 or more abilities.
The ai in the new games is heavily refined. It saw equal damage with both moves because it has iron fist, do it went for fire punch because it knew close combat would lower both defenses
Dope run my guy! Ngl, I would've also done the rare candy thing :') just saves mindless grinding and isn't rlly important to the run. Daycare is essentially the same thing, except that you just gotta bike up and down for a couple of hours which is anything but fun
It’d be really cool, but it would also be nigh impossible to run a PMD game without taking damage. I think I have like 4,000 hours in PMD games, and I just can’t see it happening.
the thick fat theory is correct so far as I know, but I did want to add that it likely chose fire punch randomly. Typically if the AI sees a kill with two options, it will just coin flip between those two options because it doesn’t matter, they still kill you. With double power in the calcs it’s possible they saw a fire punch KO AND a close combat KO, hence just randomly choosing fire punch.
My theory for that loppunny at 39:02 was expecting you to switch into a ghost type expecting a fighting type move. "That just a theory though a game theory"
Wow finally someone who does not just go ahead and say REEE THIS GAME IS BAD. Falcon you are one of my favourite poketubers maybe 2 but in the top three.
The AI for high level trainers doesn’t actually know what ability any given Pokèmon has until it is revealed in a text box as a result of the ability coming into play. For example, since Bronzong has both Levitate and Heatproof any high level trainer would have to use either a ground type move to reveal levitate when the game says the ability allows Bronzong to be immune to ground moves. This is why the Lopunny and Infernape decided to use Fire moves even though Purugly had Thick Fat.
Thats true, but the weird unexplained part is that lopunny and infernape still both had super effective moves and didn't use them against purugly(infernape's Close Combat was even a guaranteed KO on Purugly)
This was the calc against purugly(IVs are 12 HP and 13 Def): 60 Atk Infernape Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0+ Def Purugly: 216-254 (109.6 - 128.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Was that PCal's Nuzlock where he lost because of the AI being dumb and OHKOing crobat?
@@swampy725 Yep
It’s because the AI is factoring in that Azumarill gets access to Sap Sipper.
And even with thick fat Blizzard is guaranteed damage where Sap Sipper would block Wood Hammer.
Does that mean the AI accounts for hidden abilities?
