  • This video shows you how to add a “blank” part to a SOLIDWORKS PDM Bill Of Materials (BOM). I offer a simple-to-teach PDM workflow method that can be used entirely outside of SOLIDWORKS by anybody using a PDM Contributor or editor license. Everything I show is “out-of-the-box” capabilities for PDM Standard or PDM Professional that won’t require any particular setup or unique configuration.
At GoEngineer, we strive to help everyone increase their CAD software ability and work toward improving an individual’s expertise in every aspect of 3D modeling. Please comment back on any thoughts, and I invite you to stay on the look-out for the new SOLIDWORKS videos I promise to produce!

This is cool. But how canb I get the virtual part into my BOM on the Drawing?

When using PDM’s “named” BOM method, you can save it as an excel file and insert the excel file as your BOM. If you want to add a “virtual” part to Solidworks as a “computed” BOM, you can right-click on the BOM table and use the “insert new” part command. Using this workflow, you wouldn’t need to add anything as a named BOM item in PDM as it would already be there.
