    Still had one issued up to 1990 even though we used them less and less. I still have my 1960s made kit in stainless steel that I use camping and a 42 kit for re enacting.

      Yea they look like the one's we had in the 80's, one of mine probably went up the beach at Normandy when it was new.

    Q: mess tin at 1min 30 sec is a stainless .. does not look or (sound) Aluminium.. There also is a distinct difference of British mess tins (Dixies) designed to heat rations in tins placed into boiled water heated in Dixie while US to empty tins into pan then heat rations....this was procedure up to introduction of ration pouches ... which are heated in pouch in water heated in mess tin ( still same design of WW"...UK ration pouch fit neatly in Dixie mess tin.. The UK mess tin is a very clever design. one forms a lid/ keeps warm on top of tin below can be a drinking mug .. its multi purpose .. Along with issued Crusader mug ..work of art.. its all that is needed for outdoor cooking

    I was issued an M1942 mess kit in 1977 and brought it home. It is steel and coated with some sort of corrosion resistant metal. It was made by Royal of New York in 1943.

    I enjoyed your video and found it informative.
    I’ve been messing with military for years and have seen many hundreds of these mess kits of course but never paid much attention to them.
    Now I will

    Just got the 1966 version at Goodwill for 5$. It even had the cutlery. Score.

    You put the lid on the handle wrong. Slide the ring over the handle then rest the top on the handle. That way the lid doesn't fall off when served in the chow line

      Oh yeah I think I did that, but I think it was slightly out of frame in the video. Took some trial and error to figure out that trick!

    I have one with a little rust any tips on removing it? I want to use it

      If it’s surface rust then I’d try steel wool, other than that a good cleaning should do it

    • @ritchhistory1888
      @ritchhistory1888  Год назад +1

      Sometimes the not dated ones are 70s-80s with only contract numbers I think, could also be repro

    Thanks for your video. I have a few of them., 1945.1966.1986.1988.i really love them and can cook all sorts of meals, with a bit of juggling and as they conduct heat so easily. It doesn't take too much heat to cook a hearty meal, sometimes a candle will cook a meal. I am not impressed with the reproductions. I have viewed on RUclips. However take care of your mess kits,
