About me: lifelong MTB rider and racer. Bad World Cup downhiller and slightly better at EWS racing. Qualified MTB coach and guide. 5 years as the European Technical Editor for Pinkbike, followed by some years of testing and prototyping for brands within the industry.
Now I've thrown everything into this project to create the best independent bike reviews in the world.
These products are bought at full retail price, and the reviews are funded 100% by competition ticket sales and donations. Buying a ticket not only gives you a chance to win cool bike stuff but also to support more and more independent reviews. This is a community effort, you can support these reviews, or get your information elsewhere which is always funded directly by the brands or through their advertising budgets...
Thanks to everyone for the support so far!
I don’t ride flats but I had to watch the whole video just to get my fix of Paul’s ramblings!
I bought a set of 5.10 freerider pros at the start of the first lockdown and wore a hole through the sole within a month. Riding only local XC loops. 5.10 Impacts or Sam Hills all the way for me - the stiffness helps with durability, whilst still offering plenty of grip with the stealth rubber.
I settled on specialized shoes. They are even better then five ten imo. Really recommend you try them. The pedals are also very important fore flat pedal riders. I ride the hope pedals, they are a bit small but indestructible, reliable, grippy...... I tryed the kona wah wah ll, bigger platform but bad pins...
I have to second this. Paul, as you know, I’ve tested many flat pedal shoes and the latest Specialized options have at least the same grip as FiveTen. They’re the first shoe since my first FiveTen’s in 05 that have become the go-to. Highly recommend giving them a shot.
Ordered!

I agree. At least the Rime Flat shoes I've had for a year now has mega grip. Compared to my Ion Raid Amps the difference was much bigger than I expected. With the Rime Flats it's very close having too much grip because if you place your foot a bit wrong at the start of a descent it's tricky to correct the position. And if I wanna do some more relaxed trail riding I choose the Ion's just to get a bit less locked out feeling.
I’m a big fan of the Specialized 2FO DH. And on the plus side, no connection to Nazis or ongoing racism!
I love your videos man. I was just hoping for something to be uploaded. Looking forward to the YT Capra review.
After wearing five tens for over ten years (og freeriders, fr vxi, impacts, fr contact) I’ve settled on the sleuth dlx. By far the best pedal feel out there, they last quite long and are grippier than any other brand I’ve tried. The fr vxi/contact were even grippier but fell apart way too soon.
ridden freerider pro and cb stamp, both solid, cool that the stamps have a svelte hidden lace pocket, which works well, both feel great in various temps, I have big feet around 12/13
Good reviews, bad audio. A lapel mic is cheap and easy
Any experience with Unparallel Dust Ups? Meant to be a fiveten rival for grip
Tried a pair of 5.10 shoes. The foam at the top of the heel-cup dropped to the bottom of the heel in less than ten rides. Now on Ride Concepts mid-rise. Much happier now.
I'm loving my Sam Hill Impacts.
Few days ago I saw Northwave Multicross Mid GTX, similar idea to the Fiveten, gaiter, has Goretex, But I don't know how these shoes will perform, but shoes with gaiter are interesting to me as I sometimes ride through deep snow, deep puddles.
Next time test the specialized ones! Been working great for me! Atleast as much grip as the five tens. Looking forward to the next review about these shoes. Keep doing what ya doing
Bought myself the RC Livewires, nice and grippy and a stiffer sole compared to my vans. Only thing I would say is your feet can get a little bit sore if you dont stretch them out on long rides.
Have a look at Vaude if you want long lasting. There winter high top is fantastic.
The recycled 5.10's defiantly have a worst grip, i had a new pair on when i had a big accident which put me in hospital for 3 weeks, i kept loosing my grip through rock gardens, and then my foot slipped on a final peddle stroke towards a jump which resulted in a big crash.
it was not until months later i got back on the bike and took both my old 5.10's and the new recycled ones out and rode them again, when i raised how bad they were.
After a few heated emails back and forth with customer service i finally returned them, got my money back and brought some specialized.
I would have continued to use non recycled 5.10's as i was super happy with them, until the customer service issue where the whole experience put a bad taste in my mouth.
love my 5.10 freerider pro but looking for something more ventilated since these are like plastic bag
Hi Paul!
I should have waited for your test to order my new shoes!
Indeed I ordered the "new" Freerider Pro in the canvas version, but I had another problem than the quality, it's the sizing.
I ordered them in the same size as the previous Freerider Pro I had (the one without Adidas mention on it) and I ended up with shoes that were a half size too big!
I had to order a pair of "non-canvas" freerider pro shoes (with the adidas label on the tongue) half a size smaller than my old ones to get the same fit...
Apart from that, I would have been very curious to hear your opinion on the FIZIK, Versor Flat and Tensor Flat shoes, as far as fit is concerned, they are a real treat, the foot is molded like in a glove, like climbing shoes...
Some feedback on video format:
1) Shorter intro. 5 second of intro riff and your logo, maybe with some b-roll biking cut in
2) Audio audio audio. Invest in a decent mic in a low-echo room. Possible to edit out the echo in post?
3) Don’t feel pressured to one-take everything. Trim any fat as needed.
4) You could speed up video to 1.1-1.2x speed and set audio levels to maintain original sound frequency/signature
5) On the intro, dive right into the overview of options you’re comparing, with video or photos as b-roll
Obviously, these are stylistic choices! I watch a lot of RUclips and would expect these changes to improve engagement and keep an audience for longer. The longer and slower the video, the sooner you’ll lose interest.
Mr.Beast has some great inputs for how to hack the algorithm and improve retention, which he’s shared on some podcasts. Study it like it’s your job! Wishing the best for this channel. Your channel’s ethos is unique and going to make waves
I get that there was not a wide range of shoes on BF sale, but the 5.10 freeriders would be better compare to 'RC Powerline' and 'ION srub AMP'. I have these models, always wanted to try 5.10s but I have funny shaped feet and 5.10s are a bad match for me. I'd say that the Powerline and Scrub AMP have similar grip levels, but the ION has a stiffer sole which I prefer. My feet get sore faster wit the Powerline, although it has the best shape of any other shoe I tried (for me).
Here is a tip:
try work-shoes (some Personal Protection Equipment) just out of curiosity, if you can get one with less knobbly, more flat sole. I have a cheap PPE shoe just for working around the house/garden. I built a small slope and jumps in the back yard for playing around and use this shoe there. It is even more grippy, _especially in the cold_, than my MTB shoes. On a RaceFace Atlas pedal (previous generation, where the pins are angled a bit towards the axle) I feel definite resistance when dismounting ... On a Spank Oozy/Spike reboot all my MTB shoes slip in the cold, but this one still grips. They also have a stiff sole (good for me) and a protected toe box. Some pricier versions (still around half price of an MTB shoe, around 50EUR max) even look good, and are lightweight (plastic reinforcement instead of steel). I can't recommend a brand, availability may vary very much in your place, but I think Coverguard, Sparco, Beta or others might be also distributed there. And again: don't forget to check the sole (knobs) and design (reinforced sole/toe box etc.), they are not made specifically for riding.
I bought a set of 5.10 freerider (recycled) shoes and can confirm the grip is not the same as the original ones. Super disappointing.
5-10 shoes still sticky?
Five tens are great if you have narrow feet, agony if you have wide ones. Specialized were nice while they lasted but Ride Concept Wildcats are my current favourite. Grip just as good as five ten, more damped, and great toe protection.
Sounds quality on the indoors part is almost unbearable.
you can size up, then you can fit thicker socks too, even two pairs, I have 11cm wide feet, length wise I am probably around size 42, but with some shoe brands I can fit into that, but not with mtb shoes, I use EU44, I am 44 in both Five Ten and Ride Concepts.
but avoid 2021 Wildcat, as it is harder to put on, but 2021 TNT is easy to put on, about the same fit as Freerider. but not tried Freerider Pro.
but the 4.0 rubber is sticky, but not as soft as Five Ten Stealth Rubber.
But they seem to be sticky enough.
For summer ridding the most breathable shoe is probably Five Ten Freerider, I had high version, but the sole is super thin, and the shoes have some flex even when new, but the Ride Concept TNT has stiff enough sole, not almost unbendable upwards like FiveTen Impact from few years ago was. those are very heavy, and are 1cm taller at the sole.
Ride Concept TNT are quite warm, I guess all of them will feel warmer, less breathable, they are more of a all year type of shoe. But I would like breathability of Freerider, wit proper sole like the stiffer Five ten shoes and Ride Concepts.
I Tried Five Ten Trailcross Mid Pro, sole was stiff enough, good to walk in, but the shoes failed after few rides, seams failed, the glued on D3O pads came loose, the hook at the tongue came off, but the shoes were torture to wear as the stitching on the tongue rubbed my skin off. So I returned them, it took month before Adidas eventually refunded me. I think it took 4 months. I hope they sort that out. also not send the shoes in a huge box and the shoe box moves in the huge box, silly. But delivery from Germany to Norway was fast took 2 days.
I will never where a A pair of 510s ever again they don’t have any traction on the metal slept with slides. I tried to write down on here where I live and fell off it and it was 15 feet fall from the top, because my shoot a brand new pair of free riders. I spent the most money on those 510s didn’t stick on it and when I hear free ride she uses that should mean that they have a good grip on it pretty much everything I and I haven’t worn a parrot since I don’t everywhere. Wear a pair.
the best jokes are the ones you have to explain...
I wish I could easily get shoes in my size let alone proper mtb shoes. :(
You need to get a mic!
I know, I have three now, but am filming everything on iphone and they hate to connect nicely with the iOS. Next I need to upgrade to a proper camera - thats on the backburner until I have a real house instead of essentially a campsite haha
