When troubleshooting intermittent connection problems/dropouts, my experience has been eliminating wifi altogether. You can get cheap ($5-7) USB to ethernet dongles for the Pi-Zeros everywhere. Even if ethernet is inconvenient, it takes wifi issues out of the mix and lets you focus on the other things that affect voice quality; ie. hotspot freq offset, portable radio out of tune (which is the same thing), etc. In the end it's just more reliable for me.
Can you add more than one wi fi AP to a single hotspot so you can automatically connect to different networks while Mobile...Like while I am in my car it connects to my cell phone hotspot, but when I arrive at home I can shut my phone down and it connects to my home network automatically?
@B Barkley Duplex hotspots add a minor amount of configuration complexity (which should become 2nd nature as you get more experience with these things) but are useful for someone like me who talks with a finite group of people that are fairly aggressive on quick-keying; more positive control of your PTT. Also duplex hotspots do _both_ timeslots plus you can disconnect overly chatty talkgroups without waiting for the bucket-mouth to finish.
I’m about to buy one off Amazon after the local DMR repeater was turned off. I now have a DMR radio sitting there not doing anything. I have no idea what I’m doing but I’m sure I’ll find the info online.
Do you really need a heat sink? This is the first video that mentioned using a heat sink. Also, you mentioned that an auto USB power will kill a hotspot. Can you elaborate more on this? Just use a battery in the car? Dave K8WPE
DMR doesn't help as much if/when internet access points are out though as it relies on an internet connection (as your computer would). But it's a great addition to analog for long distance communication when things are up and running around you.
That’s a great video, totally explained everything, I have an Openspot3 which is superb, but I an really concerned how fast the battery drains ( so are others according to the internet ) I have one of these will use it as a backup.
Hello. I work in small European company. We have 2 offices and they are in diferent cityes, 100km away eachother. My boss buy us DMR radios because GSM not work there. My question is: Can we connect theese two ofices via internet using something like that hot-spot?
Do yopu have any info on an outside antenns to increase range ? 25 or 50 foot of coax? What kind of coax? outside antenna? Thank you for your video and answers.
Cannot get the board to be found on my computer, tried installing driver, opened BlueDV and device not found, cannot even use device manager (on three different computers) to find the device... help, please?
Hey sir, how did you get your oled display to swap so you can turn your hotspot upside down? Also I am having one heck of an issue getting my hotspot to connect to a net head Jet pack that I use in my truck, no mater what I do I can’t get it working. If anything has any thoughts please let me know.
Dear Vk4nga, if i buy one MMDVM Hotspot+8G TF Card Support P25 DMR YSF for Raspberry Pi New on ebay, its already for use in d-star? or i need one raspberry pi-zero?
Hey great video, my only issue was where you bought your kit. Could you please let me know where you bought this, and how i could order one from the same person/store where you bought yours? I understood that you got it from “Amateur Radio Toys” but the next thing I heard was “From Winters Viewing”. Now I’m pretty certain that “winters viewing” is not the name of the Chinese seller. I appreciate you helping me out in advance. Take care, Lee.
@@vk4nga Thank you SO much! I would put my FCC call sign, but I just don’t want to loose my anonymity on RUclips, and obviously if I put it here, it could quite easily be found and cross referenced with ALL of my other posts! Again, thanks a lot.

Great video. Just got my MMDVM today and it's up and running already. I see what you mean about reading the display with the default antenna. Where did you get your antenna? (what is it called? I did a quick ebay search for "Vertical Antenna" but only came back with MMDVM kits)

The problem with these reviews is that someone new to digital IS LOST in the first 30 seconds with all the ham acronym jargon! Sounds like I still have to buy a slew of different radios to be able to use these limited powered devices. Why can't I just use my cellphone and an app with my cell data? Rube Goldberg waste of time! PS, I work with networks and digital satellite. I can maneuver those with ease. My confusion is why all this for simple voice, and 1200 baud sub-dialup speed!

Do you have to be connected up to a cell pay monthly local service network provider to use the hotspot?.
I still have no idea what the advantage is over a simple 70cm antenna. What is it for?
Do you still supply these?
I cannot find the sources that you mention in your video. Please provide a link to them.
