  • So here's the complete time lapse fossil preparation video of one of the first ever known members of the dog family (Canidae) known as Hesperocyon. This fossil was found exposed on a private ranch in South Dakota and comes from the Brule Formation of the White River Group dating back to the Oligocene 30 million years ago. This time lapse condenses about 15 hours of prep time down to a couple of minutes. Below are a list of some of the tools I used for this prep project:
Hand tools (used for soft matrix only):
Exacto knife - for removing matrix close to the teeth
Pin Vice with Tungsten Carbide stylus - to clean between the teeth
Pnuematic air tools (linked to large air compressor):
Zoic Palaeotech ZPT Microraptor - Lower pressure air tool used for cleaning the Oreodont jaw and around the bones.
    Consolidants:
3-4% Paraloid B72 & acetone - helps penetrate into the smallest of fractures to give the bone strength.

Girlfriend is a huge paleontology buff, she sends stuff like this to me all the time, and i always watch them all the way.
VERY beautiful fossil! Very satisfying seeing all that white stuff getting slowly chipped off the skeleton.

Prepping teeth is difficult, but its always fun ;)
Recently I've prepped a Phytosaur teeth wich was a big challenge because the matrix was a lot harder than the teeth. But the teeth survived :D

Absolutely amazing work! How long did this take in total?

Thanks Max. I reckon this one was about 12-15hrs in total. I've got to admit that I forgot to film the bulk of the preparation of main block as I had camera trouble.

@@PalaeoArt what it is incredible how long things like this really take. Videos never do justice as they are obviously shortened but it must take insane patience to do something like that.

@@PalaeoArt what only 12 - 15 hours!!! That’s insane!!! It usually takes me that long with a small ammonite

So curious on the story on why these two were together. Possible bigger predator in the area at the time this one was scavenging? So many possibilities. Very cool.

Is the matrix bleached or is that just the lighting?

Thanks Norm. This is actually an adult specimen. Hesperocyon wasn't very big as canids go.

Thanks very much. It's hard to say I'm afraid as although it an interesting association, it's not well articulated and both fairly common speices in that formation.
