- We heard it over and over on the campaign trail: Donald Trump’s promise of a crackdown on criminals and undocumented immigrants at a scale and breadth this country had never seen before. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, has swept into American cities and is detaining more people than ever before.
However, 71 percent of those held in immigrant detention by the end of September did not have criminal convictions, according to the Migration Policy Institute, a think tank focused on immigration. Many law-abiding immigrants who followed the rules in their applications for visas, green cards or asylum are being taken into ICE detention centers.
In the Opinion Video above, meet three people who came to America legally, only to find themselves in ICE detention. They followed the rules - but it didn’t matter.

@krasnoiarkmy Brother has been with ICE since 08 and I can assure you. Just like you're not in a database with a bench warrant and won't be arrested unless you do. If they are legally documented immigrants they are not in the database as illegal. I've had two legally documented immigrants in my employment at my shop since 08 and ICE was called on us in May. They're still with me today. Do you know why??? Because they're legally documented immigrants who take care of their legal obligations.

They're detaining legal migrants. A few people I know were detained who have work permits to work in the US. No criminal history. Just good people working and contributing to society.
After being detained, they're being coerced to sign self deportation orders.It's not right. Some of these individuals have been working on getting their residency over many years and paying thousands of dollars every year in hopes to achieve the American dream. They're being detained simply based on racial profiling.
So, if you or someone you know is detained, please do not sign any paperwork without first consulting with a lawyer. Know your rights.

I'm a volunteer with immigrants and we are hearing the same exact thing. They are detaining people then when the lawyer goes to talk to DHS, they claim they signed a self deport order when it wasn't true. They are also telling detainees the self deport form is for something else, misleading them to sign it, or just flat out threatening them if they don't sign it there will be consequences. It's really f*cking insane. We have to remind people not to sign anything before going into their check-ins or hearings in case they are detained randomly. They are also detaining people and then moving them out of the building so fast that when the lawyer shows up that same day, they are already on their way to somewhere else, without having talked to a lawyer. Everything is so f*cked up rn and part of the country is asleep or doesn't believe the facts of what's happening

@JeffBarker-q2f It may not be all, but Yes, a federal judge in Chicago recently ordered ICE to release hundreds of detainees due to unlawful detention practices and violations of a prior consent decree. The current estimated number is around 1,000. U.S. federal judges have already ruled that ICE detention practices can be unconstitutional, and in principle that means they can trigger monetary liability - but so far the major financial judgments have been imposed on local governments that unlawfully held people for ICE, not on ICE itself. The latest settlement is 112 million.

I was detained for 65 days by ICE. The first 4 days I was in this processing cell with capacity for 25 people, we were 49. No beds or showers, we were sleeping on the floor like dogs in a kennel. Miami Krome Detention Center.

But remarks of making us the 51st state and fear of ICE detentions made us look to other countries for tourism. While I'm glad so many fellow Canadians are rejecting US tourism, I'm also very fearful for my friends and colleagues who are legal immigrants working in the US. 3 more years.

Part of my guess is the majority of ICE hired since January were out of work or working very level or temp jobs. Many seem inclined to bad tempers and violence. With the up front bonuses, many/most or these hired may had had a lot of prior problems. I have seen some who clearly don’t even know how to hold a gun, and others, all too willing to point a gun at the onlookers. And you can always tell who the newbies are. It’s amazing there have not been more on street deaths, and I am afraid we don’t even know the true numbers of in detention deaths within the states, much less in foreign detention. The fact, this is a ‘for profit’ system is utterly disgusting.
Unethical treatment of other human beings; mind boggling incompetence; shameless lies; a total dearth of accountability. All for what? This is disgusting on so many levels.

If they get one to the detention center, that counts toward the quota. If they find out they are citizens, they are let go eventually, but they don't subtract that from their quota. That's why they grab everyone they can whether it's a good "catch" or not.

As to whether or not ICE has broken international law… the conditions mentioned in this segment may well break the conditions laid out in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the UN Convention on Torture. And the USA is a signatory of that convention.
They also singed the UN Convention on Torture, ICE could be breaking those as well.
If the allegations that ICE has been dallying in eugenics turn out to be true, that’s a crime against humanity as well.
But - let’s be real - two decades ago America personnel were very proudly SAing people, water boarding them and keeping them in dog kennels, and the UN was unable to do much about it.
And under Bush 2 legislation was passed which explicitly says that America will invade the Netherlands if American personnel are put before ICC to answer for their war crimes.
IMO the American people are going to have to work this out domestically, and for their sakes I hope they do.
