You are so inspiring! I'm 15 and I want to become a surgeon. I want to go into either peds or trauma. I do well in bio but I wanted to know how hard it is to remember every vessel and disease, as it seems really hard. I loved the wrist surgery, by the way!

Currently Air Force enlisted medical admin. I never really realized I wanted to do medicine until I watched the doctors I work with and the knowledge they have. I want that knowledge. I used to get queasy seeing needles and the sight of blood, now I watch videos of surgery in my spare time. I love helping people and I want to be able to do more. Thank you for your videos. I hope to become a surgeon one day.

This was super interesting to watch. I’m a pharmacist and six weeks post ORIF on my distal radios from a snowboarding accident. Usually I research the hell out of anything medical related but for some reason had zero desire to and even an aversion with this. Now that I’m in PT and getting a lot of my range back I’m open to learning about it and I just happened to watch this video after watching a couple others from you earlier. Thank you for posting this, I have the utmost respect for surgeons - and it makes me so happy how respectful you are Of your peers with all the “please” and lack of demeaning tone in the OR. If you’re ever in the Coeur d’Alene area, drinks on me! Cheers 🍻

How do residents stay awake while on call? I’ve always thought the practice to be so odd to keep doctors at the hospital working for so long when it’s not healthy to stay up like that, let alone concentrate on surgeries. You are a super hero!

I’ve talked to many and they said it’s a crazy thing. You’re tied but you don’t really notice or have it set in until you it down or after your shift. Surgery is a different game because you’re focused and it’s like tunnel vision, time goes by so fast

You should consider using a wheitlander to help with retraction. You won't that much help when you are in practice. Avoid sticking your hands in the wound, you will get stuck with sharp bone fragments. Use a freer elevator to help with the release of the pronator quadratus.

Dr Webb, I loved the look into your day as an orthopedic surgeon, it really binds the gap between the viewers and career. On average, how many days a week would you be on call for that duration of time in the video? Or do you have som shifts that are reduced? Thank you again for all the effort you put into your videos as well, I'm purchasing your book in a few days and I can't wait to begin reading it.

Great work Doctor, I'm a paramedic in Colorado and we work 24hr shifts all the time 24 on 48 off, I wish I had energy to and work out at a gym but I'm afraid I'm getting too old and all the gurneys with patients on them I pick up one hundred times a day kick my bum, You might need to fix your left headlight Doctor

I was so intrigued watching the wrist surgery being performed. Are you not allowed to record a full surgery?? I would be so interested in watching a full surgery being carried out like this one.

      Hi,
Thanks for the comment and watching! I would just focus on the basic classes and then transfer to a 4 year university. After college, you need to apply to medical school and after medical school you apply for Ortho.

    Hello from canada :)
really appreciate the video, especially the aspect of prioritizing things.
I'd love to hear more about that part and to hear what you do when you do break your patterns and also hear the other side when you don't have a good day and hear what you do :), how you spend your "me" time.
Most importantly: what do you do when you feel like you have pushed your limit and that you are tired but you cannot stop, what do you do in that situation, how do you recover from being in that situation :)?

      Hi,
Thanks for the comment and watching! Greetings! Good questions! It's hard to find balance like I said in the video but you must find something outside of medicine that you can turn to to relieve stress aka get away. For me, that is the gym or anything outdoors. When I hit a wall, I think it's good to just take a step back from everything (even if it's for a few minutes) and re charge...then to at it again! Stay in touch and please share these videos!

Dr. Webb; I have been following your website for a few weeks; one comment I wanted to make is about your comment about people not having to be really intelligent to become a physician. In your case I don't agree. I feel you have an inate
Extreme intelligence that just needed to be brought forward
That was just quietly resting in your brain until there was a call for it to be brought forward. And medicine is a Difficult profession and constant studying is required, but the progression of learning is one area built upon another area, but every specific area has it's own facts to learn. And medicine always has new updates, procedures, medications and instruments to
    Learn about and try out.
Also live patients' are not cadavers, there no margins for error.
To put my thoughts in a nut shell, you are extremely intelligent, solid in mind and
    body, in control and exhibit
    Self assurance that is required
To display to instructors you are a or have the ability to become a Great Surgeon!!!
Straight A's does not always make a great physician or Surgeon!!!!!
