The empire was split multiple times and Valens was appointed co-emperor by his brother Valentinian. Valens was emperor from 364 up to 378, at which point he was killed in a battle against the Goths.

I like playing them for the alt-history value of a Zoroastrian holy land. But the issue for me is that you basically just fight ERE the whole game, there’s not much variety. No wondering when some horde’s going to show up or if your neighbor is coveting your unsecured borders. Just conquering everything from Egypt through Anatolia.
The nostalgia from watching this gameplay is intense. I also remember the frustrations of squalor and having to force settlements to revolt so you could retake it and exterminate the dissidents.
I like the new style where you play smart/efficient, like building the right stuff, recruiting the optimal units, ect. But not to the extent of your blitz campaigns, where everything is done with such high tolerances.
I'm always watching your videos while I play and I always learn something new especially from the older titles... I started on rome 2 so it was just auto resolve campaigns. Lately I've been playing rome 1 on mobile at work so I've been rewatching all your old videos to learn tactics/cheese from the cheese God 😂😂

I used to love your old stuff because you were awesome at the game and you were having fun fucking murdering everything on the map. I turned off when you started doing warhammer videos. It's not that I hate that game or that you weren't good it was just obvious you weren't enjoying it. I want to see you having fun and then I can relax and enjoy the gameplay. The worst thing to see is someone trying to force in fun to games that aren't exciting them.
I for one watch mostly for the apparently crazy strategies and tactics, which seem to always work. And for the cool tidbits about the games' inner workings. I've picked up a few tricks along the way, and seen how possible are some situations in which I would have thought I wouldn't have had a chance in hell. Really interesting.

In an Empire building situation Paganism vs Christianity comes down to decentralisation vs centralisation. Once Rome switched from a republic to a dictatorship Paganism became a liability.

In my current campaign everything got turned on its head. All the hoards attacked me instead. I built fortifications on the bridges across the Danube and finally wiped out the Hun hoard. The Vandals haven't been really doing shit except occasionally fighting the Goths, and the Western Roman Empire is incredibly strong. Between fighting stacks of Huns, the WRE betrayed me early on and has been sending stacks my way too. I can't wait until I get my expedition force built up so I can hammer the WRE right up their fucking asses with some heavy metal cavalry. Edit: Oh, the Sassanids haven't been a problem for quite some time. I pretty much wiped them out early on because I thought they'd be my biggest threat besides the Huns.
How are you playing this ? When I put my old disc in it comes up please use administrator privileges so I'm locked out of medieval 2 and Rome tw, Alexander and barbarian invasion I don't have steam on my laptop or computer as it won't support it any help would be great

Hey legend you might know this but when I owned the CD version a exploit I knew to keep hordes from spawning in the European part of my empire was to put forts on all the river crossing on my side of the river along the Duban river. It's worth a try idk if was patched out ever. I played the eastern empire a lot back in the day and I did that shit all the time I know it worked on the CD version.

Legend how do you know how far to move up your archers with out them getting caught by cav? When I move them up I lose half of the while spamming the move button to get back but they don't listen also sorry if you already answered this.
Brandxzombi636 Just pay attention and keep your main infantry line ready, or if you're like Legend let the peltasts/ skirmishers go up front to take the brunt of a charge since they're nearly useless once they're out of ammo

I just noticed that under small unit scale, it is harder in battles because of the towers, there are less men to kill by them.

Also possible you have skirmish mode on. Units with skirmish mode on tend to not listen to your orders when they're being charged.
Legend, how do you play on max settings and without the high shadow glitch on modern PC??
Pagan Rome will always be my favourite, but Emperor Constantine saw the benefits of an empire wide monotheistic religion.

Interestingly, Valens, your emperor, was one of the last to fight in battle. He died at the Battle of Adrianople in 378 though.
