This is not the first time MS does this confusing naming. At one time there was 3 different pieces of software named Explorer, yes, the Windows Explorer (the Windows file manager), the Internet Explorer (the web browser) and Front Page Explorer (the file manager inside Front Page web making application), why? Only MS knows.
I have Microsoft 365 which includes Office Outlook (which I like) but that looks as though it is being migrated to a new "Outlook" which the Windows Outlook is also being migrated to. My Office Outlook has option to "try the new Outlook". Excellent explanation which I will refer my friends to when they ask about "Outlook".

I just had this confusion at work! We were using Gmail for our business but everyone decided to go with Outlook! When i opened Outlook it didn't look like anyone else's! What a pain! IT said"Well thats the wrong Outlook!" Why in the @#$$ would they have 3 with the same name? So confusing! Thanks for the Video!
I use a MacBook for work, and we use enterprise exchange accounts for out email. The Outlook program for MacOS used to be the Mac port of office outlook, but Microsoft has really been pushing for some time for people to use the new version of outlook, which you referred to as Windows Outlook. As far as I know it is not possible to run both at the same time, but it is possible to switch between them, by clicking an item on the File menu, to enable or disable “New Outlook”. The new outlook is missing several features that are available in the old outlook, most importantly to me the ability to automate tasks with AppleScript.
Interesting that you list pop3 and imap4 as possible email protocols for office outlook (for which both office outlook is far from being ideal) but not the protocol it was made for: exchange and its eas protocol :-) Anyways, the first one is usually called Office Outlook as you stated, that makes it clear then. It was deinitely less confusing when the free windows client was called Outlook Express, i agree :)
You did refer to this in your video but I think it's worth emphasising; 'Microsoft Windows Outlook' is a free program, whereas 'Microsoft Office Outlook' is a paid for program, part of the Microsoft Office 365/2016 software package.

Thank you for the explanation! I use Microsoft Office Outlook and recently discovered about Microsoft Windows Outlook replacing Windows Mail & Calendar in 2024. Not sure what I want to do for the future as it is possible I could be changing to Unix on my PC the way Windows seems to be going to "pay to use" programs (i.e., 365) and maybe even changing to an Android Tablet as I'm getting older (I'm 68) and just don't need all the bells, whistles, and headaches in the future. Got any suggestions or maybe go more in depth with this on a new video for us Seniors?
I am glad I found you! Thanks for the explanation. I can now say I am a Microsoft Office Outlook user. I have been using this version for a very long time for work and home with many contact categories. My wife always referred to it as “old” Outlook (like it went away or is going away). Question: Is there another Mail/contact program out there that you like better?
I'm not looking forward to the Mail for windows being replaced as I have to use Office 365 outlook for work. It will be confusing to use Windows Outlook for my personal emails with my gmail account. Just hope they have different icons as this will make my life easier or I would have to find a good gmail email program.

Leo, I want to use the new Outlook, it look promising. I am also worried that Microsoft at some time in future will discontinue with the Classic Outlook. With Classic Outlook I have a lot of pst files. I would like to keep them by adding Online Archiving to the Outlook drop down menu. I have Microsoft 365 Family account. I try to get into web accounts portal to set this up but it will not let me access since I do not have work or school account. I somehow have to setup admin privileges to be able to set up this online archiving. Can you advise how to do? Or do I just have to wait until Microsoft add this feature for all.
One thing to note that while Windows Outlook is "free" it forces ads onto you. I think this will be Microsoft's preferred revenue model going forward hence why Mail will be discontinued. I refuse to use it accordingly and will stick to Office Outlook on my PC.
Only the traditional "Office Outlook" is secure. The other two 'versions' require that your emails be delivered to a Microsoft server where they'll have the potential to be scanned for advertising leads before being streamed to your laptop together with the targeted ads. If your emails are not housed on your own hard-drive in .pst files, then they're housed on a Microsoft server.
The ‘Try the new Outlook’ button is still there on my Office Outlook and will obviously remain there until MS update or remove it. However, in the App list it is showing both Outlook (Classic) & Outlook (New) and I am presuming the classic refers to my Office Outlook and I can safely remove & uninstall the latter from device without affecting the Office version? It would save a lot of irradiation when sharing something by email and it is asking me to choose between tow email programs, one of which is the default Office Outlook and that new Outlook one.
Outlook (classic) is probably NOT the Ouflook that came with Office. It's the prior version installed with Windows. The name "Outlook" means many different things (thanks Microsoft). I do believe you can uninstall Outlook(New) if you're not using it. Backup your machine all the same before you do.
