We cross shopped these 3 last year and it was amazing how different the were to each other, loved the sportiness of the MG but the silly jutting out console really cut into my legroom, also rear vision was the worst of the 3. The dolphin has the best battery and equipment but was too narrow and cramped in the back seat. Ended up with the Ora as it seemed the roomiest and most comfortable for driver and passengers, also feels like the mini technicians had something to do with the handling and acceleration feel as it has a strong resemblance to my mini in feel.
I picked the MG4 for it's 50/50 weight distribution and RWD, I didn't want to sing karaoke in the car, but wanted a car that was reassuring on a windy country road.

At the moment, in Victoria, you can buy an Ora for Victoria: $38,583. This car is well made, it has a lot of features and will last for many years being electric with an LFP battery. Yes, you can buy an MG3 for $19K drive away and if one is only looking at the money it is a good deal.

I own a dolphin and chose this over the MG4 due to the dealer back up and reliability after joining some forums. I previously driven mg4 cupra born and niro as company cars and much prefer the dolphin. As soon as I got it the tyres were switched to hankooks and it drove like a different car with virtually no wheel spin. Oh and I achieved 6.2 to 60 on cold 5 degrees weather so really happy!!!

My very old RIP 80kw Nissan leaf that had 215 width tyres would spin with any brand of tyres, and your Dolphin has 150kw and 310nm with 205 tyres they will spin just as bad as your Linglong that actually are sold in Australia and are a good quality tyre!

I've got 3 cars. Each has a different purpose for the right stalk. Gear selector, turn signals, or wipers. When switching between cars it can be frustrating as I always keep making mistakes. Nothing serious happens but the lack of standardization is just ridiculous. I'm obviously not a fan of these varied controls on stalks.
We looked at these 3 a few months ago, perhaps with a slightly different perspective. We are both in our 70’s and I am 6’4” tall. From our point of view we liked the MG4 Excite, but it felt too dark inside, black headlining, black upholstery etc, also too low to the ground. Driving it however was very good as long as I had assistance getting out. The Dolphin also had black headlining and the low glass roof seemed too close to my head to be comfortable. Also with both of us in the front seat we felt cramped. No test drive as the sales people weren’t interested in us old farts 😂. The Ora on the other hand felt roomy, had light coloured headlining and it seemed to be our best fit. However again the sales people were not interested in talking to us as they were too busy signing up Tank300 sales. I had a chance to drive the MG4 again as another family member wanted to buy one, and the MG sales people were the best to deal with, and so they got the sale. Me, I bought a diesel dual cab ute and we are enjoying the room.
You didn't mention anything about some of the basic features the MG Excite, I believe does not have compared to the base Dolphin/Ora. I.E. No wireless charger, no blind spot detection, cross traffic alert, lane change assist, electric folding mirrors, 360 deg. camera, leather steering wheel, electric leather seats. Some of these features are a must these days.
To be fair, the top spec also does not have leather seats. They are vinyl with no ventilation, also no app support so no can turn on the AC to keep the interior cool

That's true of overseas markets, where GWM operates as a parent company and has seperate brands for its Ora, Tank and Haval divisions, but after setting up that way in Australia, GWM has reorganised itself so that GWM is the brand with multiple models from Ora, Haval and Tank. So, the Ora Funky Cat overseas is sold as the GWM Ora here. The Lightning Cat in under consideration for Australia too, though not confirmed, ad will likely be sold as the GWM Ora Sport if it comes here.
Ora has a simplicity touch and funky European taste when gwm engage European expert to design for it. I think it's good except the car boot is smaller.

Honestly, none of these is going to be spectacularly comfortable with three adults in the rear, but the MG 4 is probably your best fit for situations like this - it offers good width and a comfortable rear bench.
As at Dec23 best new EV under 50k driveaway was the BYD Seal Dynamic. On road costs have pushed it over 50k now thou😢. The 2nd hand market is still hot and my guess will be for another 3 years. Petrol at $3.50 a litre just won't help. Just a prediction.
When future new EVs can be had in Australia for $30k drive way, this will kill the new petrol car market. But, at $47k these ‘economy EVs’ are just not financially viable when compared to petrol cars which cost only $30k.
To me, without a doubt the MG 4 Excite is my pick. I can't ignore its same rear suspension as you can get on Long Range Essence 72 and X-Power. Too hard for me to avoid rear multi-link suspension as I've experience many benefits with independent suspensions.

With the Federal Government EV Incentives I took out a Novated Lease with an MG4 on a competitive finance rate for LESS than the equivalent ICE Corolla. For my use case (2nd car with commuting to work 2 days a week) it was a no brainer. If you work and are in the market for a new car definitely investigate it for yourself. If I was to purchase it outright I’m not on the ‘EV at all costs’ bandwagon and would have stuck with an ICE.

Those are different versions. The Luxury (not available in all country's), Trophy and XPower version do have them. From the outside you can very quickly see which version it is because the more expensive models have the twin spoiler at the top and a full led light bar at the rear.

Saying the MG4 is like the Corolla of the group is right. It’s low to the ground, awkward to get in and out the front, the driver space is less than my Clio. and the rear is really tight to get in and out from, the rear seat is too far forward to get boot length and fit the drive train underneath, and the door is big enough but the seat blocks access. I’m 6’2” around your height, did your knee end up leaning against the edges of the front console? I liked the look and walked away disappointed.
To be fair the Dolphin is both FWD and the tyres are very narrow just 195 with the fairly powerful 150kw and 310nm torque so of course any tyre compond will struggle to get grip.
@waynehooton6154 Well, my 2014 RIP Nissan Leaf with just 80kw had 215, and I used to spin the tyres on that EV. The MG4 is less torque and less power than the Dolphin, yet it has 215 for the Excite up to 235 on the Essence.

Shopping. That's not a bad idea. Forget litres: I think if my mum was watching a video like this, she'd want to see how much (and what kind of) shopping went in the boot, and which seats were the squishiest. I'd like to see reviewers actually put some shopping in the boot and try to get kids and adults in the car.
These EVs are not cost effective considering the drive away cost appears to be about $47k. The only exception to this is if a driver drives a lot as the EV would eliminate the dramatically higher petrol and engine maintenance costs. If the retail costs for these EVs were similar to petrol cars like the Toyota Corolla or Mazda 3, then there would be no comparison as the EV would be a blindingly obvious rational choice. But, this is just not the case.
IF you can lease, a ~$40k EV = a $20k ICE due to Australian FBT discounts. And if you can charge at home, electricity is about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of liquid fuel for same driving distance. So there are some IFs in there, but they'd work out cheaper for many.

Moreover, a good number of new Toyota cars do experience premature engine and transmission failures due to manufacturing defects. Toyota does not make 100% defect free cars 100% of the time. This is impossible.
Toyota DPF. They sued people then lost. The ACCC fined them for misleading and anti consumer conduct. Toyota appealed and lost. Toyota select telematics being sold with the car then years later attempting to hit the current owners with subscription fees for something that came with the car. Using Toyota Select to spy on car owners including selling the data to third parties, breaking not only the law but their own policies. Then getting caught and fined for that. Daihatsu, a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota getting caught for falsifying safety test records for 38 years. Fuso truck wheels falling off and killing bystanders. What is the source of this claim? A Volvo XC40 petrol T4 variant costs $1200 per year to service. AFAIK the Volvo XC40 and C40 electric are on the same schedule but nobody can tell me why it’s also the same price. The MG4 has a service interval of two years and 40,000 at about $300 per visit (not per year). Given the only used vehicles regularly coming up for resale or repair are Tesla and Nissan, there isn’t enough data to say what other newer models will sell for in 5/10/15 years time. Again where are you getting the data for this claim from because I am looking at used Tesla prices on car sales weekly and the prices are not going down. We brought a Kia EV6 GT Line here in NZ brand new it costs $112,000 plus ORC. Our one had a factory towbar $1800, and the so-called premium paint $1450 extra, so with everything added . We paid $88k, so it's lost $28,550 off the new price! And that was from a dealer, so imagine how much that owner lost!

You forgot a key point, no rear speakers at all unless you step up to the Essence or higher, only front row gets speakers in the MG4 in the excite

Excite looks pretty solid
With the Federal Government EV Incentives I took out a Novated Lease with an MG4 on a competitive finance rate for LESS than the equivalent ICE Corolla.
For my use case (2nd car with commuting to work 2 days a week) it was a no brainer.
If you work and are in the market for a new car definitely investigate it for yourself.
If I was to purchase it outright I’m not on the ‘EV at all costs’ bandwagon and would have stuck with an ICE.
Why your MG4 looks different than these from Europe?

Those are different versions. The Luxury (not available in all country's), Trophy and XPower version do have them. From the outside you can very quickly see which version it is because the more expensive models have the twin spoiler at the top and a full led light bar at the rear.

Saying the MG4 is like the Corolla of the group is right. It’s low to the ground, awkward to get in and out the front, the driver space is less than my Clio. and the rear is really tight to get in and out from, the rear seat is too far forward to get boot length and fit the drive train underneath, and the door is big enough but the seat blocks access. I’m 6’2” around your height, did your knee end up leaning against the edges of the front console? I liked the look and walked away disappointed.
The BYD Dolphin is the most modern and smoothest ride
To be fair the Dolphin is both FWD and the tyres are very narrow just 195 with the fairly powerful 150kw and 310nm torque so of course any tyre compond will struggle to get grip.
They are 205 on the premium model
@waynehooton6154 Well, my 2014 RIP Nissan Leaf with just 80kw had 215, and I used to spin the tyres on that EV. The MG4 is less torque and less power than the Dolphin, yet it has 215 for the Excite up to 235 on the Essence.
Once those ling longs are replaced it's like a different car!

These EVs are not cost effective considering the drive away cost appears to be about $47k. The only exception to this is if a driver drives a lot as the EV would eliminate the dramatically higher petrol and engine maintenance costs.
If the retail costs for these EVs were similar to petrol cars like the Toyota Corolla or Mazda 3, then there would be no comparison as the EV would be a blindingly obvious rational choice. But, this is just not the case.
IF you can lease, a ~$40k EV = a $20k ICE due to Australian FBT discounts. And if you can charge at home, electricity is about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of liquid fuel for same driving distance. So there are some IFs in there, but they'd work out cheaper for many.

No matter which way you slice and dice the financial proposition, a $47k EV is just not an objectively economy car at all. There is one aspect where petrol cars will be increasingly uncompetitive as the years progresses: depreciation. Petrol cars will be worth next to nothing come the 2030, as by then $30k and even $20k EVs will be ubiquitous in the new car market. Only moron would insist on buying a brand new car in 2030.

Toyota reliability is just a myth. With poor maintenance, the engine and transmission will fail in good time. Moreover, a good number of new Toyota cars do experience premature engine and transmission failures due to manufacturing defects. Toyota does not make 100% defect free cars 100% of the time. This is impossible.
Toyota DPF. They sued people then lost. The ACCC fined them for misleading and anti consumer conduct. Toyota appealed and lost. Toyota select telematics being sold with the car then years later attempting to hit the current owners with subscription fees for something that came with the car. Using Toyota Select to spy on car owners including selling the data to third parties, breaking not only the law but their own policies. Then getting caught and fined for that.

I really don't think $40,000 is a cheap car considering the 5 to 7 year higher purchases contract to buy it ,after that time the battery is at its use buy date , sorry never will buy one to limiting to most people life styles.

The battery packs will most certainly last for the life of the EV. There are older Tesla Model 3s around the world which have travelled 500,000km and 600,000km and are still utilising their original factory battery packs.

What is the source of this claim? A Volvo XC40 petrol T4 variant costs $1200 per year to service. AFAIK the Volvo XC40 and C40 electric are on the same schedule but nobody can tell me why it’s also the same price. The MG4 has a service interval of two years and 40,000 at about $300 per visit (not per year). Given the only used vehicles regularly coming up for resale or repair are Tesla and Nissan, there isn’t enough data to say what other newer models will sell for in 5/10/15 years time. Again where are you getting the data for this claim from because I am looking at used Tesla prices on car sales weekly and the prices are not going down. The Leaf prices are going down then back up, tracking with the retail price of petrol

We brought a Kia EV6 GT Line here in NZ brand new it costs $112,000 plus ORC. Our one had a factory towbar $1800, and the so-called premium paint $1450 extra, so with everything added . We paid $88k, so it's lost $28,550 off the new price! And that was from a dealer, so imagine how much that owner lost!

Bullshit. Chinese EVs are very safe. Tesla would not rely on Chinese CATL for their battery packs, much less manufacture Tesla EVs in China at all if the reality was otherwise. Moreover, the Australian Government would not allow Chinese EVs to be imported into Australia if they were inherently unsafe. There are many, many tens of thousands of Chinese made EVs in commission on Australian roads. Where are the these Chinese EV fires in Australia that you speak of?
Buying a Nissan Leaf as a grey import is just not for most Australian consumers who insist on the security and reassurance of having guaranteed support from Nissan Australia. Simply put, most Australians are indifferent to JDM cars.
Perhaps you were not around at the time, but, as recently as the 1990s there was still a perception by a good many of Australian drivers that Japanese cars were of dubious quality. Nobody has these views today in the 2020s. Similarly, as the years progress, the negative _perceptions_ that some Australians have of Chinese cars will eventually fade away.
