16:12 I’m gonna try to explain a bit of their process and why maybe it was a bit confusing at the end.
From what I understand, they all record a song in their voices, often Jungkook, their main vocalist, records a guide first for all the other members to follow. They are all very involved in the creation of melodies, lyrics, production, etc. They have all written and produced. After the initial recordings they decide which parts of the song fit best each member. There have been times a member wanted a specific part but it fit another member better, so they were the ones who got it, they are very open abt it all and don’t have any problems fighting for a spotlight bc they all get their moments, all have solo careers of their own and solo songs within their BTS- group albums.
There are songs that have a specific line up during recording that can change when they perform live. For example, in Spring Day, the song starts with RM’s voice in the recording, but J-Hope sings his part in live performances. This can have many explanations ranging from them just choosing a different sound for the live version, to J-Hope having a more stable higher voice for singing than RM (both are rappers).
In this song, I went through a couple of live performances and in most of them, the vocal line (Jimin, V, JK, Jin) is the only one singing at the end, they sing in pairs and switch from singing the melody to adlibing for the other (example, Jimin sings melody while V adlibs, then Jin sings melody while JK adlibs). Jin and Jimin have high voices so they often blend together, specially if they sing the same line but in different points of the song, which I believe happens in this track a lot. Each of the rappers (RM, J-Hope, Suga) had a short verse in this song, and even though it may feel like they “took a backseat” on this song bc it’s more vocal-focused, since BTS does so many genres, in their more rap-focused songs the vocal line is the one who “takes a backseat”. There are also songs with only the rapline and songs with only the vocal line. All in all, throughout their discography, the divisions of lines is the most equal I think it can ever be for a 7 member group with rappers and singers, I believe JK is the one with the most but it makes sense since he is the main vocalist and since he also used to rap in their early songs. There is one live performance (when suga was missing bc of his shoulder surgery) where RM and J-Hope sing at the end with the rest of the members but in a lower register, the contrast of their voices sounds really good, it's part of their 2020 mma set.
As far as the vocalists go, I do believe they all bring something very different from each other, this is the best description I’ve ever seen of the different elements of their voices
    Jimin: feminine, unique
    V: dark, soulful
    JK: stability, modern
    Jin: beautiful, classical
Although some words may sound a bit generic, when you hear them enough is a division that really makes sense.
I think the visual of all of them singing at the end was more symbolic then meant for it to be a representation of who was singing what in the moment. Before the pandemic hit, BTS had their biggest tour to date planned and it was all cancelled, they LIVE for concerts, they had spent months preparing for it, and they missed ARMY a lot, so that moment was more abt that feeling and symbolism of them all together on stage in an empty stadium still performing.
Fun fact: Jungkook was actually the one who directed this MV and many of the shots were filmed by him in their house (they all lived together until 2021), they spent most of the pandemic together in that house.
Edit: also IDK what you looked at to see the division of lines for song, but if it’s not something official, it could be wrong. Jungkook (juh-ng-gguk) does a lot of the background adlibs and harmonizes with the members throughout many songs, but each vocalist sings quite a bit in this song.
Edit2: Suga (Shooga, like sugar without the "R") also released his own solo version of this song in his last album "D-Day" under the same song tittle, it's really nice too, you should check it out.

I would add that most sources I've ever seen that claim to show division of lines are done by what we call "solos" (people who not only like one member, but in general hate the other members - they're often those "fringe" people you mentioned exist in any fandom). With this background, just know that very often the "division" in sources who talk about that is misrepresented because "solo" fans tend to victimize the member they love. It's illogical thinking and actions, but there it is. Most true ARMY don't really care about division of lines.

Lots of great context in here and I learned a lot. First of all, thanks for the phonetic pronunciations. I was kinda close on Jungkook but I had no idea Suga had the H sound at the beginning.
I'll be keeping that third paragraph as well as the vocal coloring descriptions in mind when I next visit the group and try to train my ear to hear the differences.
The process of who gets what line sounds like theater productions and the process of choosing who gets what role; with most cast members understand that even if they didn't get what they want that it's all in the benefit of the art rather than the self.

@@CriticalReactions Yay, I’m really glad it helped. I think Jin shines the most in their Japanese songs (specifically live performances). Crystal Snow is a personal favorite. Some amazing vocal-line only songs are The Truth Untold and House of Cards. And yeah, they all see BTS as something precious and they prioritize it above all else, that has a lot to do with all the hardships they’ve faced together over the years and the brotherhood they formed because of being in the group of BTS. They’ve also been open abt going through hard times, in 2018 they considered disbanding bc they were having a hard time since it was around the first time they were getting massive global recognition. They wrote the song Outro: Tear abt it, and it’s a rap-line only song, so keep that in mind if you chose to check it out. Thankfully they made it through the year and were able to be each other’s strength to this day.

Hi! I love how in-depth your analysis is and how much you pay attention to details.
Different songs have different people who are more prominent than others.
I'm new ARMY so I might be getting some of this wrong, but I think multiple people record the same part and then they choose whose voice fits the best.
As far as I've seen the distribution of parts is quite equal in their whole discography, but not per song. They seem to prioritize making the best song for their vision without caring about who is showcased more. This results in each of them taking turns being the focus of songs. While they also have their personal projects, they all have solo songs in BTS albums so there's not much fighting for the spotlight when they each have one:)
They do have a leader, RM, but that doesn't reflect on who gets what parts. He's the leader in the sense that he was the first member signed and the group was formed around him, and he's the go-between for the company and the group. Also, he is one of the main songwriters and he has been one from the beginning so he's reflected a lot in the music that they put out though all of them write and/or produce now.
JK is the main vocalist so he usually has a lot of parts because aside from the verses that he sings he also does lots of the harmonies and adlibs both live and in recordings.

@@CriticalReactionsFor their collaboration with Coldplay for the song My Universe, Chris Martin obtained permission from SK government and traveled there to record it. It’s documented in a short “shooting sketch”. Idk how representative it is of their normal production process but it’s a cool & heartwarming glimpse of how that song came together. There’s a separate sketch for the music video as well. BTS releases these behind the scenes clips for most (if not all) their MVs and special performances.

Who "shines" in the song depends on the song honestly, they have more than 300 songs so you have to remember that hahahah
Jungkook is the main vocalist, but his role isn't restricted to lines, and they've already said they divide it to who sounds best to the part of the song, they don't really care about it tbh there will be songs where the rappers have more parts, where the singers have more parts, where a specific member or another has more parts, it honestly comes down to the song.

They just lounging around watching their videos, playing games. Eating pizza
At the end they are singing on stage without an audience. There are Army bombs ( the fandom light sticks).

    1. One of the things I love about BTS is that the vocalists have very distinct timbres and the rappers have very distinct rapping styles, and I live for the interplay between these different voices.
I remember in my early days of exploring BTS, I was gradually learning to distinguish their voices, and then "The Truth Untold" (audio version) came on, a song by the four vocalists. It was the first time I was able to say confidently, oh this is V, this is Jungkook, this is Jin, this is Jimin. The song itself is beautiful, so it was an unforgettable moment for me. (My favorite video of this song is the stage mix by Kamiru)
Another song that I love for a similar reason is "Let Go". I feel like the placement of the members is perfect. I remember when I first heard the song, in one moment I was immersed in V's deep warm voice, in the next Jin surprised me with his clear tone, then Jungkook came in with his smooth voice, then Jimin hit me with unexpectedly powerful voice (I was used to him singing delicately at the time). The song kept me on my toes. (My favorite video of this song is the stage mix by friz프리즈 )
    2. In the song-making process, any BTS member or in-house songwriter is free to submit melodies and lyrics and beats, and the label chooses the best version for each song. In their anthology album "Proof", we can hear demos from BTS members that weren't selected for the final version of the songs.
Suga (aka Agust D) submitted a version of "Life Goes On", but it wasn't selected. Since he was quite fond of this version, he rearranged it and released it in his solo album. I love both versions. In his solo tour he sang the song while playing the piano. (There's a wonderful stage mix by BTSPurpleYou.)
    3. If you find the choreography to be a distraction, you can always react to the audio version or the lyric videos of their songs. There are also many times where they perform without choreography.

@@CriticalReactions I'm pretty sure some ARMY's already explained why the line distribution ain't equal, cause first of all, they honestly don't care less who has the most lines nor do they have those common group issues like "their spotlight gets stolen from them".
BTS members are not that shallow nor insecure that they need to be jealous with other members who get more lines for the sake of the song, cause if that was the case they wouldn't be in the same group.
They know all their strengths & weaknesses and JK is obviously the most stable vocalist so he carry more lines.
But if the song requires more higher notes then other vocalist like Jin & Jimin would carry the song. But if the song is more sombre then V would carry. It's that simple.
Also they're not a typical group but a band of artists who work together to create their own music.
Second of all, there's a lot of songs in the album. Life goes on might be Jungkook's spotlight since he's also the director of the MV, but the album is managed by Jimin, & the outfits, photography, album cover & visuals are managed by V & RM.
Songs like Blue & Grey are mainly written & produced by V. Dis-ease is mainly produced & written by J-Hope, Telepathy by Suga, etc.
They all have turns to shine when writing the album, since they also manage or should I say in charge who sings which songs.
For example in BE album, there's song called STAY, it has only 3 members singing on it, and in Fly to my room there's only 4.

We actually didn't name ourselves "army". The fandom was named by BTS. ARMY is an acronym, or rather translation of one. In Korean it's the letters for AMI. BTS named us Adorable M.C. for Youth which is in line with their name Bangtan Sonyeondan (Bulletproof Boycotts). According to member J-Hope, the name signifies the group's desire "to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets". They even made a logo for us that reflects their own logo. The BTS ARMY logo is also two trapezoids looking like a half-open door. If the BTS logo is the band waiting for the fans at the door, opening the door for them, the ARMY logo is the opposite. It's the fans waiting at the door for their favorite boy band. Pretty cool, right? 🥰
I'm willing to bet some of those toxic fringe fans don't even know where the name ARMY comes from. Enjoy your BTS journey! @CriticalReactions

About the lyrics and meaning behind this track. You mentioned that you felt the lyrics - specifically of RM's part - were a little overdramatic. I have two points:
    1) For BTS, the pandemic was devastating. They released a new album on February 21, 2020. They were meant to start their largest world tour on April 11. The world shut down, for all intents and purposes, on March 13. BTS was meant to do this world tour, and almost immediately after Jin (and we later found out SUGA as well) would enter the military at the end of 2020, to fulfill their military service. The next 2-3 years were then meant to be the period when they all fulfilled miltary service, work on solo projects, etc. There is uncertainty for all K-pop groups as to whether their group will be able to reunite successfully after stopping for military service. Very few groups have been able to do it. Because the pandemic shut down the tour completely, they were all depressed, unsure what they were meant to do, etc. As a group, and with their label, they were basically "punting" - coming up with ideas and plans along the way. "Let's do more lives, to help ourselves and ARMY get through this mentally," "Let's release a song to cheer everyone up. Let's make it in English to reach more people since everyone is struggling." (Dynamite) "Maybe we should make another album?" (remember, no group album was planned after the one release in February..."Life Goes On" was on that album - called "BE" - and the entire album was self-written, self-produced...members even divided up managin the music video (JK), art direction (V), project management (Jimin). They all contributed music/beats for consideration (as they have always done), and they picked songs with the idea of having two sub-unit songs and the rest with the group. BE was an album meant to keep them working/give them something to focus on, help them and ARMY to feel better, and tell the story of the pandemic. When you know all of this...the lyrics don't seem "overdramatic" at all. In fact, they seem utterly approporiate for the way that the pandemic blew up the group's very carefully laid plans around their career as a group, their individual solo careers, and the requirement they all faced to serve in the military.
    2) As someone who fell down the rabbit hole during the pandemic, I can tell you that the pandemic also blew my life up completely. I started working from home and that became permanent, I had been having health issues that I didn't fully understand in the lead-up to the shutdown, so I was very, very nervous about contracting COVID. My daughter had been away at college for the first time, but came home due to the shutdown...but then she went back to school in the fall of 2020. I lost contact with everyone but my daughter and father - still don't see any of the friends I had pre-pandemic. My life changed completely...overnight...and it has never recovered. So, RM's lyrics are not the least bit "overdramatic" to me either...and there are a LOT of ARMY with similar stories - people who discovered BTS at a time when life was extremely uncertain, lonely, stressful, and for many, included the loss of loved ones. Their music and lyrics were comforting, and their content made us laugh.

If you see them perform this song live, you’ll see a cool thing that the BTS vocalists often do, which is take turns switching parts. In the first chorus, two of them will sing- for example Jin will sing the melody and JK the harmony; but then, the next time they sing the chorus, they’ll switch roles with JK singing melody and Jin harmony. The four vocalists do this a lot because they all have great range and can sing whatever parts they want.

A conversation between RM and Jimin about "Life Goes On" in RM's BE-hind Full Story:
RM: "Life Goes On" went through several rounds of edits.
Jimin: It did, a lot of which we brought up.
RM: We want it to sound comfortable.
    Jimin: Kind of smooth.
RM: Right. But when it's played in the pop market or on the radio, the song needs a so-called edge.
Jimin: It needs to sound sharp.
RM: There needs to be that tipping point, so from the company's perspective, they talk a lot about how it should catch everyone's ear when we hear it over the radio.
    Jimin: Yeah, it's hard.
RM: I find this really difficult and as for this song, although it might not have that edge, I wanted people to be able to listen to it comfortably for a long time. I was kind of insistent on that part. I wanted it to be an easy listen. I didn't want it to stand out too much. So the middle road of the company's opinion and my opinion is the "Life Goes On" we have now.
Jimin: It was the only time we all felt the same way, so we had a long conversation with the staff.
RM: I think it turned out great. The most important thing to me for the mixing is just whether the song fits our intention when we listen to it. I think that's the most important.

If you’re looking for more instrumentation I would recommend butterfly (original or prologue remix which is more focused on the vocals) or black swan (original or the symphony version). One very interesting fact about BTS songs is that their lyrics are usually multilayered and the music itself is very often used as part of the “story”. “Lie” is one example. Life Goes On is set during the pandemic, so the instrumentation feeling a little “empty” it could very well have been a conscious choice, because most people at the time were “missing” important elements of their normal lives due to lockdowns and other restrictions and were desperately trying to fill their time with something meaningful. BTS’s already-healthy popularity soared at that time, they they got their sold-out world tour cancelled but kept themselves busy creating online content to make it up to fans.

BTS has 4 vocalists and 3 rappers, so in all likelihood, the last chorus is only sang by the 4 vocalists, and just the visual is showing all 7 members singing. If you're interested to hear the differences in their vocal tones, you can check-out Film Out at Music Blood Live. The leader is RM, and Jungkook is the main vocal, however, they switch it up a lot between songs, and the members don't mind taking a back seat in some songs vs others. Just a little background about Life Goes On. BTS had a massive world tour planned for all of 2020 after the release of their album Map of the Soul: 7 in February 2020. But all the concerts were postponed and eventually cancelled because of the pandemic. This was a huge blow to BTS as they love to perform and this was going to be their last tour before enlisting in the military for their mandatory service in South Korea (all 7 members are currently serving but they plan to reunite in 2025). So when everything was at a standstill they really didn't know what to do but decided to work on a new album called BE which this song is from. The whole album's theme is that of their feelings about the pandemic, how much they miss their fans and performing, and the hope that things won't always be this way and that with time it will get better. They also released 3 fully English songs during this time to lift people's spirits during such a difficult time (Dynamite, Butter, and Permission To Dance). They actually filmed this music video at the same time they filmed their online concert. The lights you see in the background at the end are called ARMY bombs and they are BTS official light stick that fans can purchase for BTS concerts.
It's interesting to hear you say some of them sounded the same because one of the many things that drew me to BTS was how different each member's voice is. I think you just need to listen to them before. I would recommend 2 performances for this. BTS cover of the Coldplay's song Fix You and their cover of I'll Be Missing You.

As people have already mentioned in their overall discography they have quite equal distribution of lines. Jungkook always seems to shine beacuse hes sings their guides and does the adlibs.
They have said that each member sings the whole song and they see which memeber suits which verse /line.
They do justice to the song even if that means a members are represented a little bit unevenly.
For eg if you consider the song home youll find jimin as the one that shines the most and jungkook doesnt seem to have that many lines in that song whereas in their debut song jungkook has a lot of parts.
They also have subunit songs on their albums
.rapline songs which is only 3 rappers
.vical line songs all 4 vocalists only
.solo songs where there is only one member
.some subunit songs are random like jamais vu has jhope jin and jungkook

    Muchas gracias 🙏🏼💜

The mv was supposed to be minimalist because it's during the pandemic. And this particular song was specifically produced by all 7 of them. And not all of them were singing, the 4 vocalists were singing and backing each other up base on adlibs and so on. Please try listening to the song instead of talking over it, it will make you understand what is happening. And you don't want to bother about them shining individually as each one of them are massively shinning on their own. It's not your bother to bother. And unlike your western artists, they are not dragging who is showing up onscreen and when and that's why they have been together for 11years. They know and trust themselves enough to know that they are equally shining. They have so many songs each and everyone of them can shine in another one.

Here are some BTS b sides with really cool production that I think you’ll find interesting, especially in conjunction with the lyrics:
    134340
    Rain
    Whalien 52
The first 2 have a cool jazzy element to them, as well. 💜

    Thanks for your wonderful reaction.
They are the biggest band in the world.
    Here an overview about BTS:
BTS (in Korean "Bangtan Sonyeondan" means Bulletproof Boyscouts) consists of three rappers and four vocalists. All seven of them are excellent dancers.
Here is the list of their names:
RM is the leader of the group (Rapper)
SUGA also goes by the name of Agust D (Rapper)
J-Hope is the main dancer and dance leader (Rapper)
    Jin is the vocalist
    Jimin is the vocalist
    V is the vocalist
    Jungkook is the main vocalist
They do a wide variety of music, but basically they are rooted in hip-hop.
All seven members participate in making their songs by writing, composing, and producing them.
BTS started with a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom. So they have struggled from the beginning to prove themselves.
Dynamite, Butter, Permission to Dance, these three songs were released in English to give positive energy to people around the world during the pandemic caused by Covid-19.
Most of their songs are in Korean, and their music video provides subtitles in several languages, including English. (Please turn on the subtitles while watching)
If you're interested in BTS's songs without choreography (some of them have a little choreo), here is a list of them:
Spring Day (THE longest charting song in Korea)
    Blood Sweat & Tears
    Save ME
    Fake Love
The lyrics of BTS' songs are based on their own experiences, and their albums are organic because they contain their growth narrative. BTS are famous for their deep and meaningful lyrics. They have written almost 95% of their songs from their discography.
BTS offers a wide range of genres when it comes to their music. As a group they are explosive but they are also individually amazing in their different style of music. They make a wide variety of genres of music like Hip-hop, Ballad, R&B, pop, EDM, etc. I'm sure there are quite a few of their over 300 songs that suit your taste. :) They have numerous world records to their names.
Another song I recommend is "Run BTS". Their is no official MV for this one, they have a dance practice video and their live performance from their free Busan concert.
Lastly, I think this video is the best to understand each BTS member. ;)

I would love to watch more of BTS reactions on your channel.
I hope you enjoy their whole discography.
    💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
P.S: As of 12th of December 2023 all the members of BTS have enlisted for military service.

I am enjoying your reaction and I am not musical. I think my only amateur contribution could be is that I think there are mulitple songs that are more complex with the musicianship of the instruments. You are getting the quiet songs. Try ON or Dionysus for more complex music. This is a guess on my part vs full knowledge. Others might have a more informed opinion. Thanks

You might want to watch the MTV Unplugged version (although I don't know if it still gets blocked) for comparison. There are more adlibs and harmonies, including singers adlibbing behind the rap. You can get a good look at how they trade off with ease.

The leader is RM- the main vocalist is Junkook but they all have roles.Lead and main dancers are JHope, Jimin and latterly V is part of the dance line. There are 4 vocalists Jin Jungkoo, Jimin and V . The rap line consists of JHope, RM and Suga-they usually have at least one verse each but they don't seem to worry about equal time per member so much as serving the song. The music is the most important thing not ego. Suga is Shooga- short for shooting guard- his favoured position in basket ball. Their main producer is PDogg-though they do produce as well- Suga has won awards for his production. Nice review.

I think the lock down in Korea was pretty brutal initially. Fortunately all the guys lived together at that time so they were able to continue making songs together. It is possible at that time they had no access to musicians. The MV was directed by Jungkook, the youngest member. I am not sure who produced this song, but Suga or RM do a lot of their producing.
Other tracks you might enjoy would be On Kinetic Manifesto, or if you prefer vocals watch a live performance of Crystal Snow or House of Cards.

Officially they have 3 Rappers and 4 Vocalist however all 3 Rapper's can and do sing as they can sing but their they are first and foremost Rappers from the Underground Hip Hop scene. The 4 vocalists are all very different and the 3 Rappers are all different as well. You never know who's going to sing what often live they'll be far more alibs thrown in you never know quite what you are going to get. The members don't worry about how often they appear on any song as they all know they'll get their time to shine in another group track or one of their solo. With well over 300 songs it's all evens out over those songs. RM is their official Leader eg spokesperson for the group and one of the main song writers.

They have a track were one of the Rappers J Hope where he sings with a full gospel choir behind him in a song he wrote about his mother called 'Hey Momma' it of course start's out with him Rapping then singing. Just when you think he's finished he takes out his in ear piece's walk back up the stage and the goes to a stand mic and the stage behind him opens to reveal a gospel choir and he continues. It show is verstilatity as a Rapper, Sub Vocalist and Dance Leader. Of course he also wrote the lyrics. ruclips.net/video/uZtzH_2jekk/видео.html

For me the production is the star of this one. I think the music itself is just OK; it's very safe, chill, laid-back pop, but the production adds enough beautiful layer to make it sound lusher and richer than it is. Vocally it is very nice with the harmonies, but even there I think it's the producer that does an excellent job of sorting it all out in the sonic landscape. I generally prefer pop that has a little more of a personality/vision genre-wise so I don't know if I'd listen to this on my own, but it's not bad by any means.

I know BTS is outside of the general scope of the channel but so is all of the jazz, marching band, classical, hip hop, and other pop that I check out. So I kinda get the original question because it's kind of surprising to see BTS on the channel but it's also not entirely out of the question :)
