Amos and Clarissa Mao built a friendship during the months long trip from the Ring Space to Earth between seasons 3 and 4. The mechanic training she had undergone to pass as Melba gave her and Amos something in common and she ended up helping him with the Rocinante's maintenance. If you remember back in early season 4 there was a video call between them that kind of established that this had happened off screen.
Did they hook up in the books? I mean, hour could they not?! She's a young lady heading for a life sentence and he's...Amos. what else ya gonna do to pass the time 😁
@@Shawn_M Hook up as in sex? Definitely not, no. Amos doesn't shit where he eats (meaning he doesn't have sex with anyone on a crew he's on, hence his extensive use of brothels whenever they're in port). He's more of a big brother to her.

Well, a lot of older people do tend to hide personal stuff under their beds. Money, diaries, girlie mags. Fred's probably their era's version of a boomer, so, yeah.
You have to remember that Marco was working on this plan before anyone beyond Protogen knew of the Protomolecule. Remember the Belter OPA spy Chrisjen subjected to gravity torture in episode 1x1? He was arrested for attempting to smuggle stealth tech off of earth. This attack was in the works from the very beginning. Yes, the spider-bot was controlled by Marco’s people. The gal that shot Fred was controlling it with her hand terminal.
Amos said was there to help Clarissa like Lydia helped him, emotionally. This is a huge development for him, he's trying to be there for her. He's never done that before. They were ten floors below ground at the prison. The prison is near Philadelphia, were the second impact was. Also Marco's crew told him Earth destroyed three, so three hit Earth and three missed. The first one we saw broke up by the suns gravity, that's one of the three that missed .
@@thontor Well, using a bit of extrapolation, applying a bit of book lore and using a little Google Maps magic, it works out a bit more. The rock hit around 40 mile NW of Philly, which puts the impact zone around Reading PA. Bearing in mind most of the East coast was already underwater before the asteroid strike off the coast of Senegal, the location of The Pit was closer to Greensboro NC (from the books) so that puts the distance at around 450 miles. Even if you locate The Pit in current day Chesapeake VA, it still works out to be 308 miles. So, as I said, quite a distance, but still close enough to make a huge fucking mess.
Yeah, I don't get it. Naomi has consistently lied to and flaked out on the crew since episode one, yet people love her. Meanwhile Fred has been honest with them every step of the way and people don't trust him.
He stole the Navou to help the belt. Raided Thoth station for the belt. Took out the hybrid pods with his borrowed nuclear arsenal to save mars and end the war. That's all I needed to see. Obviously his heart is in the right place.

According to Wikipedia, production of ‘Foundations’, where Jared Harris plays the lead character, resumed in October, so he’s probably currently somewhat preoccupied. Since Foundations is sort of the +60 years old (at least the first 3 volumes) grand daddy of epic sci-fi, I wonder if that would affect the likelihood he might return for at least a couple of scenes: presumably the 2 shows would likely be direct competitors (though if James Gunn can direct for both the MCU and DCEU, I suppose why not). Also Monica showed a leaked footage of Cortázar being taken by Marco’s minions last episode.

This show has been going from strength to strength since season 2, the quality of this past couple of episodes in particular is really impressive, 5×04 feels like a season finale and 5×05 feels like a short movie. Again, an impressive showing.
It was implied that the protomolecule sample was going back to that ship that started the attack. If you look closely, you'll see that the thing that took out Fred Johnson's wall Looked Like a Torpedo, but was actually some kind of drone that blew up the wall and released and retrieved that robot

The torpedo/breaching pod that brought the spiderbot did so when Sokai summoned it with her comms. Once spiderbot reboarded with the protomolecule sample, the pod closed its door, detached, and flew away leaving the room, along with Sokai, Monica, and Holden, exposed to hard vacuum.
The robot drone that was sent for the protomolecule was launched from the Zmeya in a breaching-pod shaped like a missile (not a FedEx pod as was used in season one), and it returned to the breaching-pod, which Sakai sent back to the Zmeya (that is what Sakai was doing with her hand-terminal).
Yeah, that was a crazy episode, one of my favorite of the entire show, doesn't give you any time to breath. I don't think Amos was planning on breaking her out, I'm not sure even he knew what he was doing there. Looking forward to the next episode :)
After 200 years of violent oppression, a strike like this seems to be the only option as the Inners move through the rings and start extracting the worlds there, while the Belters are again left to rot. Marco has solid points, but his execution is horrendous. Keon Alexander fucking nails his portrayal, he's so charasmatic and has such a commanding presence. RIP Fred, I didn't expect him to die here based on the books, but again and again the writers love to throw curve balls at us to keep us on our toes. Dawes, based on book appearances, wouldn't show up until season 6, but given how busy Jared Harris is I don't think we're gonna see him again unfortunately
Re: Dawes. Dawes is a charismatic master manipulator. So is Marko Inaros. It may be that the writers decided one was redundant, and since the story currently revolves around Marko, they may have killed Dawes off when Marko snatched Cortazar.

Since Naomi gave the protomolecule to Fred, I was wondering what he could be doing with it. The answer was nothing, he just wanted to hide it so nobody could use it again. now i feel stupid for doubting him
It's wild how (some) people don't expect Sakai, when her sympathies are made pretty clear in the previous episodes. Somehow, people suspect Bull even though he clearly has no sympathy for the Belters' plight. It's because he's grumpy. See how easily an emotional reaction overcomes all logic in many people? People just gobble gobble gobble everything they're fed and don't question it.
Sakai's compliance despite Bull's fairly extreme racist prodding had begun to make me suspicious. I didn't expect the extent of what happened...but I expected her to be someone who would turn on them in a critical moment. Sleeper agents pretend to be loyal like Sakai, not jerks like Bull.
Marco's Plan has been in effect since the First Episode of Season One. Remember the Belter that Avasarala was Gravity Interrogating. He was stealing Stealth Composites. It wasn't for Mao. :)
Dawes isn't in this book anyway, other than one video message. Fingers crossed that they can get Jared Harris back for the 6th and final season, even for just a single episode
Terrorism has never achieved the intended effect. In reality it tends to do the opposite. I'm also fully expecting Marco to do something stupid with the protomolecule. Something that's going to really piss off those orange aliens.
13:25 Marco talking about children is a strange evil echo of what Klaes Ashford was talking about back in Season 3, about thinking beyond yourself. Both ARE right. Having children does do that. Ashford learned to tolerate, if not forgive, the Inners. Not doing so when peace was on the table would only kill more Belters. Let's see if Marco is a "good" father and really loves his son or if he sees Fillip as just a tool.
About the protomolecule, I took it as that second projectile that was shot actually being some kind of shuttle carrying that robot to come salvage the Proto. Cause when it blew the wall open to Fred's quarters, there wasn't a vacuum but what looked like another room. So I assumed that was the inside of the thing it came from, sort of like when a ship boards another ship it creates a seal so that the crew can board the other ship and when the boarding ship detaches there is a gaping hole into space where it cut through, sort of like what happened to Fred's quarters. Also it is definetely going back to the Zmeya and then to Marco. There is no way all those attacks happening all at the same time weren't coordinated. That would be one hell of a coincidence.
Marko taunting Naomi about how raising a child changes you, when he's the one who prevented her from raising her child, is a special kind of evil. As is telling her "Welcome Home" when it's clear she's nothing but his prisoner and always will be.
Kind of depends on if she left or he took his son. My bet is that its somewhere in the middle. Naomi couldn't continue in that situation and Marko refused to let her take their child.

It's a few months journey from Earth to the ring gate, so Clarissa spent a few months on the Roci on their trip back, and became friendly with, at least, some of the crew. She definately connected with Amos more than the others, and I think he considers her a part of the crew now... since Ive never seen him offer aid or concern to anyone who wasn't on board the Roci, or somehow connected to his past.
Remember what Avasarala said about the belt without Earth when they were discussing giving access to missiles to Fred in season 2? Ganymede was largely destroyed and basically collapsed. From now on basically everyone has a permanent bad day. Except group behind a certain name we've seen on Bobbies hand terminal in the last episode of season 4. :) What did you expect? It's the Expanse... Everything is foreshadowed... :)
As mentioned in another post, Jared Harris is an extremely busy actor! However, the character Dawes played little in books 5 & 6. If my memory is correct, his character wasn't even in Book 5. It wasn't until near the end of Book 6 (which will be next season), that Dawes reappears. I could be wrong about that since it has been a couple of years since I read the books. Yet, I'm certain he didn't play a major role in most of that time.
Jared Harris (Anderson Dawes) is playing in another TV series coming out soon: "Foundation". And he is doing / did a lot of other stuff (The Terror, Chernobyl) - so unlikely, that he'll come back :-D
I stumbled across The Terror on AMC before xmas, really enjoyed that. Lots of familiar faces in the cast... and Jared Harris cracking out another accent!

Hey you should try Fringe! I have been recommending it to Expanse channels lately. I think you would really like it! It helped satisfy that great sci-fi story that I have been looking for ever since I watched all The Expanse content that is out. Check it out! I has such a fascinating main story, even though it takes about half the first season to really dive into it. And its 3 main characters are all so fleshed out and well realized by the end. John Noble as Walter is the most lovable mad scientist you'll ever see on TV!
Dawes (Jared Harris) was not in season 3 as he was committed shooting "The terror", amazing season if you consider watching it. Afterwards he did Chernobyl and his profile raised quite a bit, though he had a part in the also Amazon Prime show Carnival Row, which is awful, but at least we know he's on Amazon's Rolodex. His presence in the books is really minor, but it would be nice to see him back on season 6 given him and Avasarala are the only one's left that were seen from the beginning.
You're not going to see Cortazar with Dawes. He was kidnapped in that video footage last episode by Inaros' people. They have the weapon and the scientist now.
Oh btw do you know why that first asteroid got broken up? Marco planned a slingshot around the sun too tight, in his cockyness he forgot to account for the fact that the stealth paint actually works by absorbing most frequencies, meaning it's going to absorb much more of sun's heat than a normal asteroid, and the heat made it pop.
Great reaction! I love this show, even though this episode was extremely shocking to me, it made me realize just how good it is! Chrisjen said back in season 1 on her roof talking to her grandson that she was afraid of people who throw rocks! Her family on Earth maybe gone! I thought Dominique Tipper's acting this season is amazing as Naomi, I felt her pain in this episode! Happy New Year Carly!!
As commented under another comment, the title for this episode is quite lovely: Gaugamela was Alexander the Great's masterstroke of a battle against the much larger united Persian army, after years of reckless but brilliant campaign. Gaugamela was the death knell for the great old Persian empire and marked the definitive end of an era, and the beginning of a new and uncertain future as the balance of power in the region changed for good. This is obviously what's happening with the role of Earth. However, Gaugamela was also around the point at which Alexander decided to push forward in his conquest beyond what he could feasibly sustain and properly manage in the long run, which doomed his long-term project. It's both a highlight of Marco's brilliant tactical mind AND of his hubris. Chef's kiss.
Also very importantly there are plenty of historical examples where violent revolt and active war proved to be the only way of driving away a conqueror or an oppressor. Marco's dismissal of the insane civilian casualties is of course unjustifiable and is what makes him a villain, but plenty of times in history oppressed populations only gained their freedom by fighting, so his starting point makes a lot of sense.
My name might be a give away, but I’ve grown up with tales of what the British Empire had done to India and other colonies. So when Marco makes his speech for the Belters, I can see how they would rally around him. Anyway just watched Episode 6. So good And as for Anderson Dawes. Well that’s the legend Jared Harris, and he’s a busy man
I had to really choose my words carefully before posting this, because y'know, trying to avoid giving out spoilers. This episode is what kicks off everything. Expect a LOT of craziness for the rest of the series (note that I used the word 'series', and not 'season'). About Marco's rationale on using mass destruction as part of his political toolkit: a person has to have lived in a really REALLY horrible place to erase your 'humanity'. The Belters have, for many generations. Bad air, bad food, bad (or no) water. Naomi's specialty in the kitchen was "Red Kibble", which is basically pet food, albeit spiced up with a lot of chili and masala. Bad meds - recall Dawes' little speech to Miller about a sickly sister he had to allow to die because their family was starving. They couldn't afford the bone meds, so her 'bones were like chalk'. If you've lived your entire life in a world like that, or in really sh!tty real-world places controlled by idiots or radicals, it's only natural to find people who'd have unwavering hatred for "the rich and powerful elite" who made their world the way it is. Anderson Dawes was a radical, but he was more circumspect. Marco Inaros was, quite simply, a believer. And that's what makes him scarier (and maybe more powerful) than Dawes.
This episode has a weird name, "Gaugamela". It is referencing the victory of Alexander the Great over the Persian army five times his size, one of the greatest military victories known in history. But here is something Fred said in the books, and something he clearly won't say in the show. It is easy to compare Marco Inaros to Alexander the Great. But Marco Inaros does not have a great military mind - he's a narcissist good at talking, that's it. However, someone else in this season has shown to have a great military mind. And he even referenced the king of Persia that Alexander defeated in his speech on military strategy...

Why would you think that Amos would ever go visit Jules Pierre Mao in prison? He never ever talked to him once at all in any of the previous 4 seasons. He probably never ever MET him even or had any interaction with him at all. And they made pretty clear at the beginning of Season 4 that he spent a lot of time with Clarissa while they were taking her back to Earth to face justice after the end of the Season 3 stuff.
So I started watching the Expanse and your reactions like two months ago and I can't believe I'm caught up already. Also, Vans sweater and a Thrasher banner in the back? We going to see some skate reviews in the future? Lol.
You missed renaming of "The Razorback" to "The Screaming Firehawk" - little reminder on Alex in season one (when they rename Tachi to Rocinante) - Back To The Butcher is the episode if I am correct. One of Alex' suggestions was "Screaming Firehawks", with "Flying Alamo" and maybe more... That robot came from Zmeya (Slavic: "snake"), and gone back. No, Fred didn't eject protomolecule (he just tried), because Sakai shoot down comms. Amos and Claire are 10 levels underground (but 1 level is big). That was on the screen when he arrives down. Calling her Peaches, we had this in S04E01, when she calls him (because she had nobody else to call). Fred's death was shock for the book readers too. There he survives similar attack. Sakai's treason too - but I see her as very interesting character. Somebody pointed Holden's walk to Fred's quarter as all "doors and corners" - Miller's school - nice touch there. Btw, name of the episode - Gaugamela - this is the place where Alexander the Great (of Macedonia), heavily outnumbered, defeated Persians. The name of Marco's ship is Pella. This was the capitol of ancient Macedonia. Even Filip's name is same as Alexander's father's (Philip of Macedonia). So, you can get idea how Marc0 sees himself and this attack on Earth. They probably live out one main character arc every episode (1 Drummer / 2 Naomi / 3 Amos / 4 Drummer / 5 let's not spoil...), because there are many independent as never before. In the past, we always had multiple pairings. Now, only Alex and Bobbie are together, and this is start of Amos and Clarissa pairing... Not to mention - the Roci crew has been totally split. Probably good decision - not to loose too much focus - but I miss every time when somebody is not there. About Dawes, probably most fans miss him, but all I can say, so far this is like in the books. What means nothing, because they change things, but just to mention.
This Season is The Expanses The Empire Strikes Back. Phillip has only known how to behave via his father. Externally he imitates him for his approval. The only kind he has had since Naiomi left. But internally having his mother infront of him brings back all his questions. But he still fears and reaches out for his fathers approval. You can see this because Marco did not expect him to bring her back. When he says "Looks like he still needs his mother" like a child scolded. Such a dismissive comment to a boy that wants his dads approval that he is a real belter. The kind of Belters he apeals to like those that aided the protomolecule theft on tycho are striking out with the same prejudice as inners. They saw Frank and Holden as a problem representing them. Turning those satellites towards the asteroids also means nothing is looking out at the universe now.
Good reaction of a TOUGH episode😥 Dawes doesn't have Cortizar any more, he was abducted (Monica showed them the video last episode I think?) So far this season is living up to the hype I had from the books, can't wait for the next episode.
Attempted genocide against a planet where much of the population is in poverty barely surviving off government welfare is not the solution. Corporate powers, its workers, and a complicit government are to blame. Attack those directly, not the entire planet. Not to mention the unspoken catastrophic effects on what is left of earth's ecosystem, or the inevitable destruction of thousands of years of human history written into the earth itself.

Surely one that didn't require genocide. If you want to go the aggressive murder route, surgical removal politicians who support abusive policies and attacking the companies and ceos themselves. Or Overthrow individual station corporate authorities and go the whole seize the means of production route or striking route instead. With the increased power and legitimacy of the OPA and posession of things like the protomolecule as defence perhaps that could have worked. although i hope the protomolecule would never be deployed. Anything but all out genocide. anything
@@1timemelody1 I almost hope Marco does deploy the protomolecule as a bioweapon as he threatened to do. It wouldn't necessarily function as such, now that The Work is complete, and it would deprive Marco (and everyone else) of the ability to exploit the protomolecule's true potential to confer ultimate power by enabling the user to control the laws of physics. That's too much power for any human, let alone a malignant narcissist like Marco Inaros.

Unfortunately, we didn't really get to see or even be told about the relationship that grew between Clarissa and Amos after the events of Season 3. It was a bit fleshed out in the books (there was at least an entire chapter dedicated to what happened afterward, including their month's long journey back to Earth to deliver Clarissa for judgment and imprisonment). I assume they didn't include that as they had been canceled and that was going to be the end of the show, foreshadowing something that would never happen would be a waste of precious airtime (the entirety of book 3 was already compressed into a half-season). Without spoiling anything their (very much non-sexual) relationship is possibly my favourite of anyones' (with the Alex/Bobbie friendship being second, dunno what's going to happen with that one now that Anvar isn't returning).

Your next reaction should be fun to watch. :) The guy who plays Anderson Dawes is playing Hari Seldon in the "Foundation" movies, based on the books by Isaac Asimov. Political extremists don't behave based on reason. Their actions are driven by the emotion of screaming frustration. Then, there are those willing to manipulate and deceive those extremists so as to shatter a status quo, and create opportunities to rise to power, themselves. I don't think Amos had any notion of getting Clarissa out. He mostly wanted to provide emotional support for her, in her situation. Helluva change from the first season, right? Marco *claimed* he had the proto-molecule, and something certainly stole it.
Marco is actually the best antagonist yet and is much, much smarter than most give him credit for. Its ok, if you haven't read the books, you may get to see what grows from his actions in S6.

Marco is evil, and isn't the leader the belt needs. That said violence is what ended Slavery, violence is what ended the Holocaust, etc etc etc. Sometimes as an oppressed people war is the only option to end that oppression. Marco isn't wrong in that respect. They also didn't possess the weapons to fight straight up so tactically he wasn't truly wrong there either. An unfortunate point though is that the belters believe that the average Earther is their oppressor, when in actuality the average Earther is nearly as powerless as them. Not that Marco could have managed a proper attack on Earth's leadership anyway.
I read all the books so far, Sakai is male in the books. The TV show tricked/surprised me. I hope they bring Anderson Dawes back. I like in the show much better.
Marco Inaros is the result of a lot of years of opression suffered by the belters. Even after what Fred achieved belters are still left behind. After what belters achieved inside the ring with their solidarity, they're still left behind. They can't see the future but after so many years suffering (even when trying to do things the right way) the only thing they have for sure is more suffering. They don't know if things will change doing the right thing, and even if they do it might take several years which mean a lot more suffering for them in the meantime. Marco Inaros commited a genocide, not only that, he killed millions of innocent people... just as inners have done. He definitely sent a strong message, one that will force inners to respect and fear the belters. That's the problem with power balance between nations. When you don't have the power they pass upon you. Now they know the belters are powerful enough to fight back. This wasn't right but it mostly happened as a riot from belters so they can be finally taken seriously. I'm sure that will make inners ally somehow to stop Marco but even if they defeat the Free Navy what he accomplished will remain after him. I don't like what he did, but I understand it. I think they did a really good job with Marco as a villain (and there's probably a lot of different examples through history where similar things might have happened).
Btw at the beginning I had the same reactions towards both Marco and Philip, but once I started trying to understand their perspective I got to like them a bit. I've felt like Philip a lot of times when I felt like I had the truth about something while others didn't understand and I think that's how he feels towards Naomi. At the same time he kinda tries to protect her from what might come after what they did thinking they're gonna win this war. I feel sad for him tho because his thoughts aare super conditioned by his difficult experiences and by growing up with Marco, so I don't think he owns his own ideas, he just follows what his social enviroment taught him.
@Techno Master absolutely. That's why I love this series, all the villains have their own understandable motives. Eirrenwright was a patriot who thought Mars would eventually try to fight Earth (and he was kind of right) so he did what he did to protect Earth (and so did those that protected him). Mao did what he did for science. He even had doubts and remorse at some point but eventually the possobility of understanding the protomolecule convinced him to keep going through the research for both knowledge and money, even at the expense of a lot of belter's life on Eros, even his own daughter...
I honestly can't blame them for using those tactics, i mean, for 4 seasons they has show us how crappy the inners treat the belters so... i can't really blame them
If you can't blame them, you can't blame Al Qaida for 9/11 as well. It doesn't matter how the inners treated the belters. Killing millions of innocent people who had nothing to do with it, is fucked up and can't be excused with anything.

Amos and Clarissa Mao built a friendship during the months long trip from the Ring Space to Earth between seasons 3 and 4. The mechanic training she had undergone to pass as Melba gave her and Amos something in common and she ended up helping him with the Rocinante's maintenance. If you remember back in early season 4 there was a video call between them that kind of established that this had happened off screen.
It's a part of a chapter in book 4.
Did they hook up in the books? I mean, hour could they not?! She's a young lady heading for a life sentence and he's...Amos. what else ya gonna do to pass the time 😁

He was arrested for attempting to smuggle stealth tech off of earth. This attack was in the works from the very beginning.

Amos said was there to help Clarissa like Lydia helped him, emotionally. This is a huge development for him, he's trying to be there for her. He's never done that before. They were ten floors below ground at the prison. The prison is near Philadelphia, were the second impact was.
Also Marco's crew told him Earth destroyed three, so three hit Earth and three missed. The first one we saw broke up by the suns gravity, that's one of the three that missed .
The Prison was in the Chesapeake Bay conservation area, quite a distance from Philly but close enough to make a huge fucking mess.

@@thontor Well, using a bit of extrapolation, applying a bit of book lore and using a little Google Maps magic, it works out a bit more. The rock hit around 40 mile NW of Philly, which puts the impact zone around Reading PA. Bearing in mind most of the East coast was already underwater before the asteroid strike off the coast of Senegal, the location of The Pit was closer to Greensboro NC (from the books) so that puts the distance at around 450 miles. Even if you locate The Pit in current day Chesapeake VA, it still works out to be 308 miles. So, as I said, quite a distance, but still close enough to make a huge fucking mess.

According to Wikipedia, production of ‘Foundations’, where Jared Harris plays the lead character, resumed in October, so he’s probably currently somewhat preoccupied. Since Foundations is sort of the +60 years old (at least the first 3 volumes) grand daddy of epic sci-fi, I wonder if that would affect the likelihood he might return for at least a couple of scenes: presumably the 2 shows would likely be direct competitors (though if James Gunn can direct for both the MCU and DCEU, I suppose why not).
Also Monica showed a leaked footage of Cortázar being taken by Marco’s minions last episode.

This show has been going from strength to strength since season 2, the quality of this past couple of episodes in particular is really impressive, 5×04 feels like a season finale and 5×05 feels like a short movie. Again, an impressive showing.
It was implied that the protomolecule sample was going back to that ship that started the attack. If you look closely, you'll see that the thing that took out Fred Johnson's wall Looked Like a Torpedo, but was actually some kind of drone that blew up the wall and released and retrieved that robot

The torpedo/breaching pod that brought the spiderbot did so when Sokai summoned it with her comms. Once spiderbot reboarded with the protomolecule sample, the pod closed its door, detached, and flew away leaving the room, along with Sokai, Monica, and Holden, exposed to hard vacuum.
The robot drone that was sent for the protomolecule was launched from the Zmeya in a breaching-pod shaped like a missile (not a FedEx pod as was used in season one), and it returned to the breaching-pod, which Sakai sent back to the Zmeya (that is what Sakai was doing with her hand-terminal).
Yeah, that was a crazy episode, one of my favorite of the entire show, doesn't give you any time to breath.
I don't think Amos was planning on breaking her out, I'm not sure even he knew what he was doing there.

After 200 years of violent oppression, a strike like this seems to be the only option as the Inners move through the rings and start extracting the worlds there, while the Belters are again left to rot. Marco has solid points, but his execution is horrendous. Keon Alexander fucking nails his portrayal, he's so charasmatic and has such a commanding presence.
RIP Fred, I didn't expect him to die here based on the books, but again and again the writers love to throw curve balls at us to keep us on our toes.
Dawes, based on book appearances, wouldn't show up until season 6, but given how busy Jared Harris is I don't think we're gonna see him again unfortunately
Re: Dawes. Dawes is a charismatic master manipulator. So is Marko Inaros. It may be that the writers decided one was redundant, and since the story currently revolves around Marko, they may have killed Dawes off when Marko snatched Cortazar.
Maybe after his role in Foundation, his character has a relatively small presence through the books, if I remember correctly.

It's wild how (some) people don't expect Sakai, when her sympathies are made pretty clear in the previous episodes. Somehow, people suspect Bull even though he clearly has no sympathy for the Belters' plight. It's because he's grumpy. See how easily an emotional reaction overcomes all logic in many people? People just gobble gobble gobble everything they're fed and don't question it.
Sakai's compliance despite Bull's fairly extreme racist prodding had begun to make me suspicious. I didn't expect the extent of what happened...but I expected her to be someone who would turn on them in a critical moment. Sleeper agents pretend to be loyal like Sakai, not jerks like Bull.
Right, but when you rewatch, the clues are all there. For start, she was on the Roci when Holden plays the message from Monica.

13:25 Marco talking about children is a strange evil echo of what Klaes Ashford was talking about back in Season 3, about thinking beyond yourself. Both ARE right. Having children does do that. Ashford learned to tolerate, if not forgive, the Inners. Not doing so when peace was on the table would only kill more Belters. Let's see if Marco is a "good" father and really loves his son or if he sees Fillip as just a tool.

About the protomolecule, I took it as that second projectile that was shot actually being some kind of shuttle carrying that robot to come salvage the Proto. Cause when it blew the wall open to Fred's quarters, there wasn't a vacuum but what looked like another room. So I assumed that was the inside of the thing it came from, sort of like when a ship boards another ship it creates a seal so that the crew can board the other ship and when the boarding ship detaches there is a gaping hole into space where it cut through, sort of like what happened to Fred's quarters.
Also it is definetely going back to the Zmeya and then to Marco. There is no way all those attacks happening all at the same time weren't coordinated. That would be one hell of a coincidence.

Marko taunting Naomi about how raising a child changes you, when he's the one who prevented her from raising her child, is a special kind of evil. As is telling her "Welcome Home" when it's clear she's nothing but his prisoner and always will be.
His name is Marco with a C, not Marko. The details matter, dude! Need a canon source for that?
Kind of depends on if she left or he took his son. My bet is that its somewhere in the middle. Naomi couldn't continue in that situation and Marko refused to let her take their child.

It's a few months journey from Earth to the ring gate, so Clarissa spent a few months on the Roci on their trip back, and became friendly with, at least, some of the crew. She definately connected with Amos more than the others, and I think he considers her a part of the crew now... since Ive never seen him offer aid or concern to anyone who wasn't on board the Roci, or somehow connected to his past.
Remember what Avasarala said about the belt without Earth when they were discussing giving access to missiles to Fred in season 2? Ganymede was largely destroyed and basically collapsed. From now on basically everyone has a permanent bad day. Except group behind a certain name we've seen on Bobbies hand terminal in the last episode of season 4. :)

As mentioned in another post, Jared Harris is an extremely busy actor! However, the character Dawes played little in books 5 & 6. If my memory is correct, his character wasn't even in Book 5. It wasn't until near the end of Book 6 (which will be next season), that Dawes reappears. I could be wrong about that since it has been a couple of years since I read the books. Yet, I'm certain he didn't play a major role in most of that time.
Jared Harris (Anderson Dawes) is playing in another TV series coming out soon: "Foundation". And he is doing / did a lot of other stuff (The Terror, Chernobyl) - so unlikely, that he'll come back :-D
I stumbled across The Terror on AMC before xmas, really enjoyed that. Lots of familiar faces in the cast... and Jared Harris cracking out another accent!
His character Hari Seldon doesn't have a constant role in the book series though.

Hey you should try Fringe! I have been recommending it to Expanse channels lately. I think you would really like it! It helped satisfy that great sci-fi story that I have been looking for ever since I watched all The Expanse content that is out. Check it out! I has such a fascinating main story, even though it takes about half the first season to really dive into it. And its 3 main characters are all so fleshed out and well realized by the end. John Noble as Walter is the most lovable mad scientist you'll ever see on TV!
Fringe was REALLY good. I should rewatch it, and start finding reactors to it.
Farscape is much, much, much better.....though its a little dated/old but damn its still fun.
Dawes (Jared Harris) was not in season 3 as he was committed shooting "The terror", amazing season if you consider watching it. Afterwards he did Chernobyl and his profile raised quite a bit, though he had a part in the also Amazon Prime show Carnival Row, which is awful, but at least we know he's on Amazon's Rolodex. His presence in the books is really minor, but it would be nice to see him back on season 6 given him and Avasarala are the only one's left that were seen from the beginning.
There are a few very powerful scenes for him in book 6. It would be great to see all of the 'mains' chatting together.
You're not going to see Cortazar with Dawes. He was kidnapped in that video footage last episode by Inaros' people. They have the weapon and the scientist now.
Oh btw do you know why that first asteroid got broken up? Marco planned a slingshot around the sun too tight, in his cockyness he forgot to account for the fact that the stealth paint actually works by absorbing most frequencies, meaning it's going to absorb much more of sun's heat than a normal asteroid, and the heat made it pop.

Great reaction! I love this show, even though this episode was extremely shocking to me, it made me realize just how good it is! Chrisjen said back in season 1 on her roof talking to her grandson that she was afraid of people who throw rocks! Her family on Earth maybe gone!

Gaugamela was the death knell for the great old Persian empire and marked the definitive end of an era, and the beginning of a new and uncertain future as the balance of power in the region changed for good. This is obviously what's happening with the role of Earth. However, Gaugamela was also around the point at which Alexander decided to push forward in his conquest beyond what he could feasibly sustain and properly manage in the long run, which doomed his long-term project. It's both a highlight of Marco's brilliant tactical mind AND of his hubris. Chef's kiss.
"The Expanse" isn't a television show.

Also very importantly there are plenty of historical examples where violent revolt and active war proved to be the only way of driving away a conqueror or an oppressor. Marco's dismissal of the insane civilian casualties is of course unjustifiable and is what makes him a villain, but plenty of times in history oppressed populations only gained their freedom by fighting, so his starting point makes a lot of sense.
My name might be a give away, but I’ve grown up with tales of what the British Empire had done to India and other colonies. So when Marco makes his speech for the Belters, I can see how they would rally around him.

I had to really choose my words carefully before posting this, because y'know, trying to avoid giving out spoilers.
This episode is what kicks off everything. Expect a LOT of craziness for the rest of the series (note that I used the word 'series', and not 'season').
About Marco's rationale on using mass destruction as part of his political toolkit: a person has to have lived in a really REALLY horrible place to erase your 'humanity'. The Belters have, for many generations. Bad air, bad food, bad (or no) water. Naomi's specialty in the kitchen was "Red Kibble", which is basically pet food, albeit spiced up with a lot of chili and masala. Bad meds - recall Dawes' little speech to Miller about a sickly sister he had to allow to die because their family was starving. They couldn't afford the bone meds, so her 'bones were like chalk'.
If you've lived your entire life in a world like that, or in really sh!tty real-world places controlled by idiots or radicals, it's only natural to find people who'd have unwavering hatred for "the rich and powerful elite" who made their world the way it is.
Anderson Dawes was a radical, but he was more circumspect. Marco Inaros was, quite simply, a believer. And that's what makes him scarier (and maybe more powerful) than Dawes.
This was one of the best episodes of TV I've seen in a minute.
This episode has a weird name, "Gaugamela".
It is referencing the victory of Alexander the Great over the Persian army five times his size, one of the greatest military victories known in history.
But here is something Fred said in the books, and something he clearly won't say in the show. It is easy to compare Marco Inaros to Alexander the Great. But Marco Inaros does not have a great military mind - he's a narcissist good at talking, that's it.
However, someone else in this season has shown to have a great military mind. And he even referenced the king of Persia that Alexander defeated in his speech on military strategy...

He probably never ever MET him even or had any interaction with him at all.
And they made pretty clear at the beginning of Season 4 that he spent a lot of time with Clarissa while they were taking her back to Earth to face justice after the end of the Season 3 stuff.

You missed renaming of "The Razorback" to "The Screaming Firehawk" - little reminder on Alex in season one (when they rename Tachi to Rocinante) - Back To The Butcher is the episode if I am correct. One of Alex' suggestions was "Screaming Firehawks", with "Flying Alamo" and maybe more...
That robot came from Zmeya (Slavic: "snake"), and gone back. No, Fred didn't eject protomolecule (he just tried), because Sakai shoot down comms.
Amos and Claire are 10 levels underground (but 1 level is big). That was on the screen when he arrives down. Calling her Peaches, we had this in S04E01, when she calls him (because she had nobody else to call).
Fred's death was shock for the book readers too. There he survives similar attack.
Sakai's treason too - but I see her as very interesting character.
Somebody pointed Holden's walk to Fred's quarter as all "doors and corners" - Miller's school - nice touch there.
Btw, name of the episode - Gaugamela - this is the place where Alexander the Great (of Macedonia), heavily outnumbered, defeated Persians. The name of Marco's ship is Pella. This was the capitol of ancient Macedonia. Even Filip's name is same as Alexander's father's (Philip of Macedonia). So, you can get idea how Marc0 sees himself and this attack on Earth.
They probably live out one main character arc every episode (1 Drummer / 2 Naomi / 3 Amos / 4 Drummer / 5 let's not spoil...), because there are many independent as never before. In the past, we always had multiple pairings. Now, only Alex and Bobbie are together, and this is start of Amos and Clarissa pairing... Not to mention - the Roci crew has been totally split.
Probably good decision - not to loose too much focus - but I miss every time when somebody is not there.
About Dawes, probably most fans miss him, but all I can say, so far this is like in the books. What means nothing, because they change things, but just to mention.
Marco just made the biggest mistake of his and the Belters' lives. Earth will not take this lying down.

Phillip has only known how to behave via his father. Externally he imitates him for his approval. The only kind he has had since Naiomi left. But internally having his mother infront of him brings back all his questions. But he still fears and reaches out for his fathers approval. You can see this because Marco did not expect him to bring her back. When he says "Looks like he still needs his mother" like a child scolded. Such a dismissive comment to a boy that wants his dads approval that he is a real belter.
The kind of Belters he apeals to like those that aided the protomolecule theft on tycho are striking out with the same prejudice as inners. They saw Frank and Holden as a problem representing them.
Turning those satellites towards the asteroids also means nothing is looking out at the universe now.

I see everyone saying that what Marco is doing is wrong while knowing the belters are treaded like slaves. No one bothers to offer other solutions.
Attempted genocide against a planet where much of the population is in poverty barely surviving off government welfare is not the solution. Corporate powers, its workers, and a complicit government are to blame. Attack those directly, not the entire planet. Not to mention the unspoken catastrophic effects on what is left of earth's ecosystem, or the inevitable destruction of thousands of years of human history written into the earth itself.

@@angelbedolla347 there is no easy answer. I think what Fred Johnson was pursuing, even with the danger of the protomolecule was probably a better, if slower avenue. Surely one that didn't require genocide. If you want to go the aggressive murder route, surgical removal politicians who support abusive policies and attacking the companies and ceos themselves. Or Overthrow individual station corporate authorities and go the whole seize the means of production route or striking route instead. With the increased power and legitimacy of the OPA and posession of things like the protomolecule as defence perhaps that could have worked. although i hope the protomolecule would never be deployed. @@1timemelody1 I almost hope Marco does deploy the protomolecule as a bioweapon as he threatened to do. It wouldn't necessarily function as such, now that The Work is complete, and it would deprive Marco (and everyone else) of the ability to exploit the protomolecule's true potential to confer ultimate power by enabling the user to control the laws of physics. That's too much power for any human, let alone a malignant narcissist like Marco Inaros.

Unfortunately, we didn't really get to see or even be told about the relationship that grew between Clarissa and Amos after the events of Season 3. It was a bit fleshed out in the books (there was at least an entire chapter dedicated to what happened afterward, including their month's long journey back to Earth to deliver Clarissa for judgment and imprisonment). I assume they didn't include that as they had been canceled and that was going to be the end of the show, foreshadowing something that would never happen would be a waste of precious airtime (the entirety of book 3 was already compressed into a half-season). Without spoiling anything their (very much non-sexual) relationship is possibly my favourite of anyones' (with the Alex/Bobbie friendship being second, dunno what's going to happen with that one now that Anvar isn't returning).
Looks like they might be setting Bull up so he could kind of fit into that role....if he survives S5.

Political extremists don't behave based on reason. Their actions are driven by the emotion of screaming frustration.
Then, there are those willing to manipulate and deceive those extremists so as to shatter a status quo, and create opportunities to rise to power, themselves.
I don't think Amos had any notion of getting Clarissa out.
He mostly wanted to provide emotional support for her, in her situation.

Marco is actually the best antagonist yet and is much, much smarter than most give him credit for. Its ok, if you haven't read the books, you may get to see what grows from his actions in S6.

Marco is evil, and isn't the leader the belt needs. That said violence is what ended Slavery, violence is what ended the Holocaust, etc etc etc. Sometimes as an oppressed people war is the only option to end that oppression. Marco isn't wrong in that respect. They also didn't possess the weapons to fight straight up so tactically he wasn't truly wrong there either.
An unfortunate point though is that the belters believe that the average Earther is their oppressor, when in actuality the average Earther is nearly as powerless as them. Not that Marco could have managed a proper attack on Earth's leadership anyway.

I read all the books so far, Sakai is male in the books. The TV show tricked/surprised me. I hope they bring Anderson Dawes back. I like in the show much better.
Marco Inaros is the result of a lot of years of opression suffered by the belters. Even after what Fred achieved belters are still left behind. After what belters achieved inside the ring with their solidarity, they're still left behind. They can't see the future but after so many years suffering (even when trying to do things the right way) the only thing they have for sure is more suffering. They don't know if things will change doing the right thing, and even if they do it might take several years which mean a lot more suffering for them in the meantime. Marco Inaros commited a genocide, not only that, he killed millions of innocent people... just as inners have done. He definitely sent a strong message, one that will force inners to respect and fear the belters. That's the problem with power balance between nations. When you don't have the power they pass upon you. Now they know the belters are powerful enough to fight back. This wasn't right but it mostly happened as a riot from belters so they can be finally taken seriously. I'm sure that will make inners ally somehow to stop Marco but even if they defeat the Free Navy what he accomplished will remain after him. I don't like what he did, but I understand it. I think they did a really good job with Marco as a villain (and there's probably a lot of different examples through history where similar things might have happened).
Btw at the beginning I had the same reactions towards both Marco and Philip, but once I started trying to understand their perspective I got to like them a bit. I've felt like Philip a lot of times when I felt like I had the truth about something while others didn't understand and I think that's how he feels towards Naomi. At the same time he kinda tries to protect her from what might come after what they did thinking they're gonna win this war. I feel sad for him tho because his thoughts aare super conditioned by his difficult experiences and by growing up with Marco, so I don't think he owns his own ideas, he just follows what his social enviroment taught him.
@Techno Master absolutely. That's why I love this series, all the villains have their own understandable motives. Eirrenwright was a patriot who thought Mars would eventually try to fight Earth (and he was kind of right) so he did what he did to protect Earth (and so did those that protected him). Mao did what he did for science. He even had doubts and remorse at some point but eventually the possobility of understanding the protomolecule convinced him to keep going through the research for both knowledge and money, even at the expense of a lot of belter's life on Eros, even his own daughter...
But yeah honestly all I want is just for Drummer and the #polyambelterfam to be alright 💓

If you can't blame them, you can't blame Al Qaida for 9/11 as well. It doesn't matter how the inners treated the belters. Killing millions of innocent people who had nothing to do with it, is fucked up and can't be excused with anything.
I can understand why they did it, but I don't condone it either. The millions on Earth that were killed had nothing to do with their suffering.
