  • I hope you enjoy the video, just want to let you know that when I say "them" or "they" I am talking about Kyoto in particular, I know that all Shiba Inus are different in their own way! I am still new to the Shiba world and I definitely have some more learning to do!! Since I filmed this video I have learned some things that I didn't know while I was filming this! I also noticed that Kyoto has been starting to shed a lot, so I was wrong about Shiba Inus not shedding! They shed A LOT! I didn't mention this in the video because I didn't have enough storage on my memory card BUT Shiba Inus are a great pet and an amazing friend to have! You just have to make sure that you have the time and patience to take care of them and give them the best life possible!! Thanks for watching!

      Katie McLaughlin, I was looking at a Shiba Inu for a few years down the road (after college), I might have to become a more astablished screen writer before I can take the time to really look after one. However, I am looking at getting a dog a little sooner.

      Genki Hidalgo yes I completely agree! but sometimes people get lazy and just let the dog play in the backyard instead of actually taking them on a walk. I see it happen in my neighborhood all the time. Dogs are just left outside in the yard and the owners don't take them on a walk

      Not necessarily, not all dog breeds need that much exercise (most dogs do need walked everyday tho, but not all)

    • @clytemnestra
      @clytemnestra 7 лет назад +50

      It's more about time spent walking than number of walks. Some breeds are more energetic and require more exercise than others.

    Lots of shiba's end up in shelters when their owners find out they are not 'cuddly toys'.
    When people go 'ahhh, what a cute dog, what is it?', I always tell them to do research before they take a shiba.
    Very focused and smart. Aka dominant and stubborn. To frighten them a little I tell them they are closest related to the wolf of all dogs.
    And that they are a primitive breed of bear hunters, not cuddly toys for the kids.

      @ktmclaughin  7 лет назад +98

      Bas Koning yes I totally agree! That's why I wanted to make this video about the difficult things that can happen when owning a Shiba. They are definitely great dogs, but they're also a lot of work and need an owner that is dedicated to taking care of them. Thanks for watching!

    • @ivegotzehiccups
      @ivegotzehiccups 7 лет назад +50

      I also try to educate people too. Do your research!!! As a long-time shiba inu owner (of 2 over the years), I've seen them get popular so quickly. However, I fear the welfare of the breed. Ever since shibas became a meme, they've become in high demand because they 'look cute.' But due to their primitive nature, they are not what people expect and a lot end up being surrendered. So when people stop and talk to me about my dog, I feel responsibility to help point people in the right direction and to educate.

      Bas Koning my dad tells everyone Shibas are the closest to the wolf, many people come up and ask what breed my shiba inu is. One even went as far to take a picture with him! You get lots of attention but... because people think they can come up like any other breed (more common and calm dog breeds) and my dog gets VERY worked up and he won't stop so that really annoys me. He only trusts my family and me and friends we let him meet when he was young. They're very loyal and dominant. Good and BEAUTIFUL breed.

      mcz RONI I feel that the people bringing their dogs to no-kill shelters instead of giving away to strangers or selling the dog that ended up being too much to handle is more responsible way to deal with the dog being wrong to you. Sometimes it seems like people just want to get rid of a dog, and so selling to another misguided person who jumps at the chance of having one because shiba is soooo cute much fluff only makes the situation worse.. 'cause the poor dog might end up jumping from one home to another when nobody has any idea what they're actually getting into. At least the people at the shelter can tell the person looking to adopt one a little about the breed and what kind of temperament the dog has. Those shelters that actually care about the dogs will, at least.
      EDIT: my wording seemed too confrontational. Rereading the comment it seemed a little hostile toward you, that wasn't my intention at all. Irresponsible pet owners just make my blood boil.

    very true. My Shiba used my phone as a chew toy one night as I took a bath. I had been on the phone quite a lot that day, so obviously the item distracting me had to be destroyed. phone was 2 months old. I had no warranty.

    Aw my Shiba is the exact opposite lmao, she's a lazy girl and very calm. She's very cat-like, likes to nap a lot and isn't too hyper. I'm very lucky she was never the type of dog to chew on things, I've actually never once had an issue with that! Phew. But maybe thats just the fact that I give her a lot of discipline. But I agree that they are very stubborn, if you don't have the patience and knowledge to train this type of breed you will have a Shiba that's very feisty and out of control lol. The only issue I have with Kitsune is she's not very social with other dogs. Anyways Kyoto is a cutie!

      I don't know it would cost that much if it's from a shelter? Maybe I'm wrong on that, but it's definitely much cheaper than a breeder or a pet store so if you ever consider getting a dog get it from a shelter :] (your wallet will thank you!)

    • @erin1788
      @erin1788 5 лет назад +9

      @Örrör Actually, dogs at shelters usually come with vaccinations and a bunch of other stuff like that. Obviously dog food and vet bills will cost you, but they will cost you the same as any other large/medium sized dog, so if you can't afford that you shouldn't consider getting any kind of dog.

    He's 16 months and my life has turned from depression and feelings of hopelessness. He is my everything. I no longer need medication that relieved me from previous anxiety and in general bad mood. He's my medicine.
    I am very thankfull to maybe recieve any good tips from anyone of you guys.. I feel that he already, quickly have settled down. 2 weeks now. Commands as sit, lay down, stay, come are fine but he can be very distracted and not listen to "come here ", always. Guess he's so excited around his envirement, ;P..
    I am very happy if I can manage to teach him prover way to be my real best friend. I want to speak with him to his language. They are learning very fast I notice, ^^

    While I appreciate the warnings, I really feel like you are making very broad generalizations that simply are not true. I have been a Shiba Inu owner for 11 years. The puppy stage is the most challenging, but if owners will be very patient and loving during the puppy/teenage stage: this darling dog will reward their owner a hundred-fold with affection, respect and whole hearted devotion.

    Hi! I have a 3 1/2 years shiba inu. He is indeed a dog with a big personality and can think for himself, witch I love. I do agree that that they do chew a lot (shoes, paper even walls) when home alone, but he stopped with this at 4 months old. But chewing is part of being a puppy, I guess. Manage staying home alone up to 14 hours now (rarely this happens), no crating.
    "Homeclean" after 4 days when he came home to me, always slept through the whole night, quick to learn tricks and commandoes. Rarely barks, "talks/talks back" sometimes. Energetic when outdoor, harmonic and playfull indoor. Can easily live with maksimum 45 minutes of walk a day for a long period. Patient and calm with kids and old people. Can be aggressive to other male dogs, when his ladyshiba friend is around. Shedding is a nightmare. "Come" command outdoor is a sure fail. Independent outdoor, shadowing indoor but also aloof.
    * walks around water pits, dont like getting paws dirty
    * loves snow, dipping his head as far down as possible
    * ear flattens and screams out of joy when meeting someone he knows
    * hates bath/showering, but learned to tolerate it
    * thinks he´s a cow, and eats a lot of grass in summertimes.
    * Ignores barking/aggressiveness from small dogs, but no mercy on bigger dogs.
    * Often mistaken for a fox

    My two Shibas were rambunctious in their early years (before 2 yo) and destroyed a lot of things in the house. However, reaching puberty helped calm them down and now they don't touch anything and they're both really good indoors. They're really easy to litter train due to a fastidious tendency. They shed like crazy, you will need to brush them often and vacuum all the time. Do not cut their hair! It regulates their body temperatures for the seasons. Just get the furminator brush and brush them daily. Cutting their hair will only get rid of their top overcoat then you'll get stuck with the undercoat and the top coat will not grow back like normal.
    These dogs need people with patience, positive reward obedience training and asserting your position as the leader since they are an ancient breed and have wolf like traits- they will test your leadership over and over in which you gently but firmly teach them over and over.
    I love them because they are super loyal, smart and beautiful to look at. They're so clean! Minus the constant shedding. They never have accidents once they're litter trained. No doggy odor for their fur either. And they're pretty quiet unless here is something awry to catch their attention.
    They are independent so do not expect them to be following your every command. I don't recommend them for novice dog owners. I've cared for dogs for over 20 years and I've had Shibas for 7 years. Do your research on them to see if they are right for you and your family. They are gorgeous but these dogs aren't for everyone. You will need to socialize them like crazy as they are naturally shy dogs. And touch their paws and ears often to desensitize them as they are prone to disliking anybody near their faces or body- otherwise you're going to have a hard handling them for baths, nail trims, etc. They're naturally mouthy, so bite inhibition training is recommended as well so they don't bite your children or you later on which will lead them to being dropped off at the shelter. Do your research on the needs of specific dog breeds before getting them based on looks alone. These are common things a Shiba owner needs to be aware of.

    Your shiba Inu is very young, once their turn 3 years old they will calm down. Yes it's a difficult breed but as long as you show that you are the alpha they will understand that they are not in charge. Once they get your trust the rest of the things they do you just need to have a great personality along with them to lough and enjoy your shiba.

    My Shibas shed a lot and blow their coats 2 times per year grooming is a must which you will find out in about 6 months (coat blowing usually happens after their first year. Yes they are a difficult puppy to raise, they are very stubborn and if you let them the will rule everything and you cannot allow it. They (not all but most are constantly throughout their life trying to be the Alpha whether they are male or female. If you do allow it they can be a very aggressive dog and many people are not aware of it.....most vets will tell you they have been nipped or bitten by a shiba if they have ever dealt with one. What most north americans don't get is the wild side of the dog has not been removed from it like many other breeds. One of my Shibas comes directly from Nara Japan and although he came from a famous breeder and top parents who were show dogs...on the dogs time off the owner still took them out in packs and allowed them to hunt...his first day off leash with me, he came back with a dead duck. There are not enough new generations of this breed yet to remove that instinct and if not heavily socialized with smaller animals and dogs they can and will go after them if not trained properly. Believe it or not they are actually very skilled at going after mice as well. Training them is difficult and it is constant and if you do not keep up with it they will walk all over you...my shibas are off leash dogs..but this is rare...let me make this really really clear, they will run and it is hard to train them to be off leash. Please please please do not think you can just go out and do this....I had a great advantage as my mother was a dog trainer and had show dogs and my uncle bred and trained police dogs, so I have been around this all my life and as many dogs as I have been around I have never seen such a stubborn, more independent, difficult dog. They are also incredibly smart. They are a problem solving type dog and don't think a gate will work...they can climb like you would not believe, but if they want something they will work to try and get it. My dogs have shocked me at their skill levels of solving problems....but it is also a great training tool and a way to keep them busy. Also if you have a puppy touch their paws often...they do not like their nails clipped or paws touched and they act like they are dying when they get their nails clipped...it is actually pretty funny, but not so fun for the person clipping them.....they can and do talk a lot and talk back often...they are nick named the cat of the dog world because of their aloof attitude, their independence and stubbornness. They are not a cuddly dog and they do not want your constant attention...they will come to you when they want to be pet or played with. They are also a one person dog more often than not...they pick their person and will be loyal to a fault to that person. I would never ever ever recommend this dog for a first time dog owner. All of that being said I will never own another type of breed again in my life....I love them because if you can get them trained they are one of the smartest and most loyal dogs I have ever come across. My shibas go every with me, can do every trick you can think of, they go hiking and climbing with me, camping, out on the boat to go fishing (just don't leave the fish were they can get it because they love fish and will eat it), people ask me to bring the dogs along because they are well behaved and have been taught to listen to children as well...this is important they are not super fond of kids...they like to sleep in the same area as their person, they don't like to be dirty, they have a long life span, few health issues and are really really funny. They do not like being left with other people and will often not eat for days if I go away, even though it is my son, who they grew up with, that looks after them if I go somewhere. He also has trouble getting the to listen to him if I go away. This is common among shibas so you have to be willing to be dedicated to them. They have big personalities and love to let them shine and definitely believe they are a big dog in a small body. They are a great deal of work but if you put the time in and stay consistent and on top of them they are really worth it. But if you don't have the time or are not willing to do training this is not the dog for you. Many trainers and even reps from registration agencies such as CKC or AKC will tell you not to get a Shiba unless you have owned dogs before and are wiling to put in constant time.

      wilsonroo16 this is such a wonderful comment full of so much important and accurate information. You are so right about what you've said about Shibas. When my Shiba was a puppy, she earned the nickname "Lucie", short for Lucifer ;-) But she has outgrown that puppy stage for the most part now. They are definitely not your typical dog, that's for sure. But if you can be dedicated to them you'll never want any other type of dog ever again. wilsonroo16 Best description of a Shiba I've seen. Now the shiba was my first dog after I moved from my parents, but I grew up around a variety of breeds. Definitely recommend having as much knowledge as you can have about dogs in general, go to classes, read books, etc. Just be prepared before you bring the dog into your home. Baby proof everything because a Shibu has the temperament of a two year old child when young (mine has thrown a tantrum on the worse of days getting into things to spite me). Also need to be on top of the dogs behavior constantly, you cannot just train them and then teeter off and become lax. These dogs are incredibly smart and clever and will outthink you till you catch onto their games.

    • @wilsonroo16
      @wilsonroo16 7 лет назад +9

      yes they are....many people do not realize that they can climb and can do it very well....my dogs are off leash but I have never recommended that to any shiba owner...for sure people need to put on ID on them...thankfully with all the heavy training we have done only one of my dogs ran away once and not from me but from my son and chased a rabbit for 12 blocks....my son and the dog came back covered in mud....I got a good laugh out of it but he sure didn't!

      Yeah I love Shibas and have wanted one for along time but I know full well that I most likely will not be able to handle the breed. I've had a dog as a kid before and worked at a vet clinic for a few years but I still don't think I'd be ready for a shiba. My experiences have taught me not to get a dog I can't handle and then give it up to someone else or a shelter.

    Theses dogs are very very alpha!!! Which if you have no experience with dogs THIS IS NOT THE DOG FOR YOU!!
    I do dog rescue. I'm guessing OVER 50% of these dogs get dumped at the pound because people can not handle them!!
    They don't have an "attitude" they are warrior dogs, bred for defense and attack. Unfortunately people get them cuz they are cute. They aren't cute when they are ripping the neighbors toddler apart.
    I have to extensively retrain every one I end up with. And if they aren't adopted by someone who understands, and can direct, and control, the instinct bred into this dog, they end up at the pound again

She's got a little bit of a sassy personality but that's what makes her more lovable haha. Very easy to train as well, she was very shy and stubborn as a puppy but became more playful and obedient overtime, never was aggressive to others, only let the energy out on her toys. I have been breeding Shiba Inu's for 4 years and I have never had one of my Shibas run around and chew up everything just because they didn't get there walk. I do agree with you regarding the stubborn part and it is all about me. They do have very forceful personalities, and they are an absolute joy to own. But over all you did a great job.

May not be the dog for a first time dog owner, or someone who is not home throughout the day, but he is so smart, lovable, & loyal ! Does your boy run around like crazy when he comes in from his walk, 'The Shiba 500'??

    I would advise people who are wondering if a Shiba Inu is right for them, to read more on raising and training 'primitive dog breeds'. They are definitely not the easiest, but many people say Shiba Inu dogs are really difficult to train because they don't understand 'how they work', don't have a good connection with a dog, and start fighting with its personality as a result.
    Shiba won't stand harsh training. You can not MAKE it do something. Pushing will only teach your dog to avoid you. If you push them (which is more than 3-4 repetitions at once, or any kind of physical forcing), or if your task is boring, too difficult or too easy, they lose motivation to work with you, and just walk away.
    The only thing that can truly motivate them is their personal interest. Essentially it's food or play. But interaction with you itself can become interesting for them too, although you will have to earn that interest, through showing your dog that everything is 100 times cooler with you than without you, every day. It's a LOT of work cause initially they are not human-oriented at all.

    My shiba inu has a very high prey drive! He constantly kills small prey like birds, rats, squirrels, frogs, etc. he caught a bird mid-air. It's crazy!! We walk our dog everyday for an hour and on the treadmill 30mins everyday. Very hard work but they are very cute and charming if they want to.

    I have a shiba inu too (she is now 3 years old) and I had a very similar experience as you. I thought she was the absolute devil when she was a puppy and needed so much exercising and her personality was very stubborn and "human"-like as well. With that said, I love her more than anything else in the world and wouldn't trade that experience for anything. But I really wouldn't recommend a shiba for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with training (or patience to train).

    I would say this video is most accurate when it comes to very young Shibas. My boy, Kaito, was a lot more like Kyoto when he was a puppy and up to three years old. Now he's 6 and has mellowed out so much. I don't have to crate him at all now and he pretty much just hangs out like a cat. The shedding is insane though, but he absolutely never barks...like ever, which is nice.

    They are not hyper. They also say Jack Russell Terriers are hyper. Wrong! Both Shibas and Jack Russells are very energetic and smart. I've had Jack Russells for 30 years. I still have 2. I pulled what I was told a mixed Jack off death row. Ha! He is a Shiba mixed with Chi. He has a Shiba personality. I trust him alone, out of the crate, more than I trust the Jacks, who are older and should be wiser. He doesn't open cupboard doors or get into everything. Like Jack Russells, Shibas do love to run and jump. Both breeds are hunters. Shibas hunt above ground, Jacks go underground. Both breeds require training and are not good breeds for first time dogs owners.

    • @ktmclaughin
      @ktmclaughin  7 лет назад +3

      Energetic and hyper are basically the same thing! Kyoto isn't constantly hyper but he does go into his "hyper modes" but every dog is different and my vet and almost everybody else I meet who know about Shiba Inus tell me that they are very playful and can get hyper a lot! A Shiba mixed with Chi sounds really cool though! Thanks for sharing your experience!

    • @mels.3750
      @mels.3750 7 лет назад

      I think the term 'hyper' or 'energetic' is relative. It depends on what you're like as a person. If you are super laid back and even lazy, you would consider a Jack Russell hyper. I have two Goldens who are laid back and lazy , just like me. I love Jacks but their energy level would drive me crazy. That's why everyone should research a dog breed before they decide on one, and then choose one that fits your personality and lifestyle.

    I have impression you don't talk about shiba. I have shiba and never use the crate. I can go out and leave my dog just like that running in the house and he will not destroy anything. he show us love in his way. you must know your dog to read his way to react. they not lapdogs. we respect our dog and he respect us. they bark rarely. but oh boy they screem when they dont like something and mostly they don't like a lot of stuff, they are drama queen. when we go to the vet the whole street where clinic is, knows shiba has check up. shedding yes. heave twice a year. the rest of the year the more you brush them the more fur they will lose.

    • @ktmclaughin
      @ktmclaughin  7 лет назад

      Joanna N Kyoto just needs a little more training, he's also still a puppy and doesn't know better. I think with any breed, that's a puppy, shouldn't be left alone to just roam the house. Once Kyoto is older and has calmed down I will definitely let him out of his crate. Thanks for watching!

    • @KattReen
      @KattReen 6 лет назад

      Some labs are pretty independent too, I've met quite a few, but I've also met ones that are glued to their owners and don't take a lot of initiative. Dogs do have different personalities and a lot of the time you have to adjust to work with their nature. Some dogs are just very eager to please, and are very human oriented, and those will be easier to motivate in training. Some dogs are very sensitive and delicate, and don't respond well to the pretend-to-be-very-angry kind of correction of undesired behavior, while that might be very effective with a dog that's more thick-skinned and rumbunctious.

  • @aliciaj6848
    @aliciaj6848 4 года назад

    I have 2 Mittelspitz/german spitz. Can relate to the stubborn part, how much trouble I've had with him omg. But you have to remember that all dogs have different personalities, so just because your Shiba is that way, doesn't mean that everyone is and he was just a puppy when this video was made, and puppies often chew on stuff and are more hyper. But the characteristics is true of course!

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 6 лет назад

      I don't get why these negative behavior traits don't get bred out. If breeders of other breeds can do it, why can't Shiba breeders? A lot of behaviors that are often considered bad can be good in some situations (like not liking strangers if you want a watch dog), but you cannot tell me that there is any advantage to having a dog that is just plain nippy.
      Sadly, the most beautiful breeds always seem to be the ones with the most issues.

    • @Iyashikei-t4u
      @Iyashikei-t4u 6 лет назад +1

      Those traits are often part of the charm tbh. It's much more satisfying when you manage to train such an energetic and stubborn breed well because when you do you'll have the sweetest dogs in the world. You just need to find a good middle ground between being strict and sweet.

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 6 лет назад +1

      holy sauron I understand some people might appreciate the challenge of raising a "difficult" dog, but there is really no reason to purposely breed for these traits. If someone wants such a dog, they can find plenty of neurotic, unsocialized, and reactive dogs at shelters. I believe the purpose of breeding should be to fill a demand for dogs that people want, not breed more of something we already have too much of.
      And let's be honest; a large portion (if not most) of the people who get these dogs are much more interested in their looks, than in the challenge of raising one. Additionally, I'm sure you know that an easier breed of dog can be just as "sweet".
      To be clear, I'm not saying that breeders should only breed lap dogs. I think it's perfectly fine to breed high energy dogs for people who want to do sports with them. However, I see no reason why dog aggression and prey drive should remain in a breed that is no longer used as a hunting or fighting dog. (Seriously, who still uses a Shiba for hunting?)

      I would say it depends on the age.
      I've pet sat a fair amount of dogs too, but in my experience, young shibas (under 2) have by far been the most difficult to take care of.
      So to each their own. No need to call someone else's experience "bullshit" bc yours didn't happen to align with theirs

    I really recommend using Kong(s) as a training tool and help with meals. or other interactive toys to keep them busy and thinking.
    -freeze moisten dog food in a kong and allow them to figure out how to get the food out.
    Pro-tip: Do not just take away things they chew, use it as a training opportunity to teach "leave it" or use a toy they are allow to chew on to lure them away from the item you do not want them to chew on.
    Love your puppy, but remember puppies need lots of training till there about 2 years of age!

      sarahhaejee oh Kyoto has a Kong and he loves it! We put peanut butter in it and freeze it. When he has something I grab one of his toys and give that to him and then take whatever he had out of his mouth. Thanks so much for the suggestions!!

      Its much better if it discourage some people from obtain shiba inu than they destroyed own life and life of that dog because of they think its just super cute dog and wasnt aware that its primitive dog breed with all troubles what belong to it.

    I really liked your video and I think you did a good job. You were letting people know that this breed has a big personality, stubborn streak, smart, playful and full of energy and that is a good thing to know before getting one. We have Westies (West Highland White Terrier and this breed is also known for being stubborn, having a big personality, smart, playful and full of energy. Having said that, Westies are great pets as long as you know what you're getting into, same with the Shiba's. Keep up the good work and don't let the people that take things way to literal get you down.

    My Shiba is 14months and has never been crate-trained and behaves fine when left alone. It is definitely possible to do without the crating. Ya there were growing pains in the first year but with the right progression from gates/pens and corrections when he misbehaves, he has learned to respect the space as in return I have respected his freedom and ability to manage himself. It's a delicate balance between establishing the boundaries and giving him the freedom to be happy with his environment and with me.

    I just adopted a male 7 year old border collie/ shiba inu mix 3 weeks ago. He is very docile and calm. ( but boy does he get excited for car rides! :) )I know God led me to him, and knew I was the right person for him. His previous owner died they said and someone brought him to the shelter. They said he was shut down snd needed a gentle person with patience and laid back lifestyle. That is me for sure.
    He has blossomed , in fact less than a week of having him, at my free vet visit for health checkup for him, the vet commented on how bonded he is to me. I love my Honeybear!

    Fully agree. My Hige only wants to sleep in the crate. It has been a learning curve....I have had to figure out what toys are best (I even bought the "indestructible" toys ha sure😒) he ate two pairs of ear buds....likes chewing my bed posts. I've found what's worked for Hige is that if he's got or chewing something he shouldn't have I say "ack!" And hand him one of his toys instead.

    Big, wide toothed rat tailed combs. Thats what I used on my akita, chow and newfoundland. All of their coats would explode when it started getting hot here in the high desert. There was enough fur to make sweaters for a family of 5 or better. ;-)
    I've had a lot of 4 legged friends in my somewhat, long and complicated life, once I was forced to use a chain for a short time, and I swore I would never tie or cage one of my friends up, ever again. They'll always have a well secured yard to call their own.

    My shiba is 9 months, pure breed, super easy to train, come back when called, will be super calm if she is inside but super energetic outside, and THE FRIENDLIEST dog to strangers and other dog, still, she is different then almost all shiba inus and I don't recommend them just because with EVERY shiba I have met are so much different then mine, they have the potential for major aggression, and not pay attention to their owners what so ever, so despite the fact that they are still incredible dogs, it is better not to take a chance and get a different type of dog. Though I wouldn't give up Nyla for the world😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

    Hey, I'm a Shibainu owner in "Kyoto" fortunately!
    I like you pronounce "Shiba" inu rightly, not "Shibe" inu.
    You are fully absolutely right. I had a quite tough time to tame Jiro, my Shiba too.
    He was sooooo hyper and curious, torn up and chewed up everything to check.
    When I say no strongly, he felt I 'm trying to pick a fight and fought back aggressively, so I had to change my strategy: asking him with respect in "keigo" the most respective way to talk.
    At the same time, he requred a lot of attention and affection. He was so lovely and talkative,
    had a strong personality.
    Now he is fifteen yrs old, sleeping sloppily on the warm floor all day. He grew up to a gentle, smart and lovely boy, who does nothing wrong at all. ...It took six years or so to get adult anyhow? He is my buddy. I could give him a hug all day.
    Good luck with your cutie one. Oh in addition, he or she will shed awfully twice a year, probably you already knew!

    They are a challenge. Shiba rescues are very particular about who can become shiba owners. We had to be interviewed and our home had to be inspected before we were even considered. They are notorious for running away and destroying everything homes. Lol. Our vet also highly recommended training classes for the long run, not just a puppy class.

    Excellent video. I think people see all the cute videos of them and forget about reality. I'm not being negative about them, but people don't realize how much care they need. Also the same with huskies, in my opinion.

    The number one thing with Shibas, or any stubborn dog, is that you never tell them to do something unless you are ready to get up and enforce it. Do not say come unless you are ready to chase it down. No reason for violence against animal, but it's gotta be enforced. Other dogs are easier, but Shibas are fun dogs once the rules are set down.
