Thanks for the game. So close, i did see the rook blunder in real time and i was thinking i bet he has something cool up his sleeve :) Can't wait to hear about Charlotte.
At 5:00 there's a famous game with O-O! and after Qxe3+? Kh1 where white has a deadly attack. Be sure to look up Lajos Portisch - Tigran V Petrosian, 1967 and see how an old master refutes pawn grabbing with active play!
You were going for Climbing the rating ladder but your opponent was going for Using the clock as a weapon. Good game from both sides, the middlegame especially from you was very instructive!
Ouch! Losing 177 rating points in one game must hurt! On the bright side, I'm sure that you can regain your old rating soon enough if you set your mind to it. As for the game, you provided a convincing demonstration of White's winning chances in the notoriously drawish Exchange Slav. And you're right: you did reach positions very reminiscent of some London system lines. Your very dangerous attacking chances on the King-side forced Black to sac an exchange to try to survive in an ending. You must have been winning but Black's three remaining pieces were very active, so considerable accuracy was required to bring the technical phase to a logical conclusion. And of course by this stage you had precious little time left on your clock relative to your opponent, but crucially no increment to keep replenishing your supply of seconds. So blunders and/or time forfeit were pretty much inevitable! Still, a lot of great commentary and useful lessons to be learned from the game, for which I thank you.
Good game and very good lesson! I like your comments on every move so we understand how to think and how to take decisions during a game. I think black should have played f6 in order to break your center before moving all pieces to Queen side. And also, B in c8 and R in a8 were not playing at all! Thank you!
Every time I think I'm really stomping my opponent the computer says, "Nope, you played like an idiot". On the other hand, whenever I think I played like an idiot, the computer says, "Nope, you did fine". Tonight, I thought I played like an idiot and this time the computer said, "Yep, you played like an idiot".
Great game, very instructive on the exchange slav and the ideas that flow from the opening position. And... gave up my fingernails watching the clock tick! Lol. 177 points... ouch! sometimes the Elo system doesn't seem totally fair...
Its Glicko - not Elo - or he wouldn't have lost so many and probably a lot of the points are lost due to not playing frequently in Rapid time control, which acts as a multiplier. Overall its a better system but if you don't play frequently in a particular time control it can be quite painful.
@@greenUserman I didn't watch the whole video when i made my comment because i thought that there was no way for someone to lose 177 points from a rapid game unless it's a new account or their first game in the time control. Maybe it's John's new account or something. I edited the comment before you made your reply tho
damn man i felt so bad watching you losing like this because of the damn time , i think you should play with increment since you are not only playing but explaining your thought process to us !!
John (after losing 177 points in one game): [laughs] that's pretty funny... No matter. Me (after losing 100 points in a tilt session): [expletives and rage]
Well played, John, and very instructive, but you're killing me with that time pressure (smile)--taking 13 seconds for a move with 41 seconds left. Of course, you lose a lot of time talking to us.
5:00 john (or anyone, really), why wasn't Qc2 considered? defends b2 and threatens Qxh7 at the same time. I know it's a one move threat, but doesn't it win a tempo by forcing something like h3 or g3 by black? Edit: I just saw Nb4 by black... is that the reason?
When you blundered a rook and you had about 15-20 secs i knew that you were not going to win easily. well these guys at 2400-2500 are very good, you definitely outplayed him in the middlegame, but they are fast and do not make big mistakes, so even when down an exchange, they can produce some problems.
If I'm around 1300 rapid and 1000 blitz online, do you think that's more beginner or lower-intermediate? Just curious, I know it's kind of subjective. Just hear John and a lot of other people talk about this kind of stuff pretty often.
Hey John, Analysis Gang here. No need to apologize for the abbreviated analysis--sometimes you just have things to do. I wonder, though, if the moral of the story here is actually... don't play CTRL games without an increment? I debated whether to post this because I didn't want to seem too critical, but it seems that the no-increment time scramble might be antithetical to the idea behind CTRL. Not that this wasn't informative, of course. But, for me at least, what makes CTRL so interesting is the real-time breaking down of the position as you are playing, and playing without increment--especially against strong players--forces you to sacrifice either quality of play or quality of commentary. I also have a hard time converting winning positions, so I always appreciate being able to see how you do that; in a game like this that devolves into a mad time scramble at the end, I feel that we miss out on that somewhat (although you did cover some key moves in the analysis). Just two cents from some random member of the Analysis Gang who always gets so much from your videos and appreciates everything you do! 😀
@@JohnBartholomewChess My eyes saw it as some sort of logo and as you move your head it interacts with your beard to create strange effects. Anyway absolutely love your content and style of presentation.
Currently, I've been posting a new video every two days at 9:00 am US Central time. Seems to be a nice cadence for the channel!

It's a blessing! Anything with a higher frequency than one video per month is awesome!

Awesome insight - wasn't aware of that one!! Here's the game for those curious: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1106762
thats funny... 5 is where i had to pause and break from vid.. coincidentally its around 5 pm.. cheers
I thought he was going to 0-0, but I was not sure if that works, thanks for the insight about that game!
great spot. Some interesting comments under the link to the game John posted below too.
Big respect for risking/sacrificing all that rating for instruction John. I can't handle no increment at all.
Thanks for the great content again John - studying for my licensing exams and I save your videos for study breaks!

Haircut looks slick, John! Great video.
Analysis gang merch required.
This is why I played 10+5. Really interesting game and analysis, cheers!
Thanks for the video again John. Been enjoying these and learning alot!!
Literally yelling at my screen "MOVE JOHN!" 🤣🤣🤣

oh wow, that Chessmaster logo takes me back. what a blast from the past.
Great game. Thanks for taking one for the interest of chess education!
I think the ultimate mistake was to commentate without an increment.
Maybe but it was still great content and informative nonetheless.

Is John deliberately playing no increment and getting into time trouble to make the content more exciting 🤔 If so, it's definitely working! 😂
Drunkenstiener? For a second i thought it was magnus, lol
You can see he went down from 27xx to (at 2:00) to 25xx (at 21:24 after the game), so the title is correct.
Ah, got edited and now my message makes no sense lol

That's well above average! If you click into your stats on each time control, you can see what percentage you are on the site.
Thanks, John! Love your content, thanks for all of the great videos! I look forward to them.

Hikaru style pieces 🤔

Wow, John is playing a strong player! This happens very rarely (typically he plays against 1300s).
A moment of silence for any 1300s reading this.
Check out the Standard series. Over 300 videos. Enjoy!
Strange request - please remove the logo on the head rest of your chair! It creates a strange illusion with your beard!
Wtf lmao? How does that even matter?

I hate this piece set with a passion... PLEASE NEVER AGAIN!!!
Better to be a medium 2500 than a low 2700. 🫠
I agree 😊
