    You can do a sanity check on timing by seeing that #1 piston is at TDC (top dead center) while your gear timing marks are aligned. That's what they're indicating by those marks aligning at 6&12 o'clock.

    Good installation. Nice video clarity as well, good lighting. That’s key to an informative video. Clear visuals and good editing. I like it.

    Just in case you aren't aware, info from ZZPs listing of the double roller timing chain says a tensioner isn't necessary, but more importantly, a machined thinner cam plate and thicker front cover gasket should be used to give the chain more clearance. I'm far from a 3800 expert, as I've only rebuilt my engine once, but I've already been through the steps you show in this video. I installed an ST5 cam, double roller timing chain with no tensioner, machined cam plate, and thicker front cover gasket. Parts not covered in this video that I installed in my build include comp cam OE-R lifters, 7" 3/8th pushrods, and 150# valve springs. Sadly my build has been on hold for a couple years, but I'm finally getting back to it.

      Oh yes I'm aware of the clearance and luckily everything clears. Everyone seems 50/50 on the tensioner so imma just run it and see what happens. Hope your builds up and running soon!

    Great job retaining the tensioner. Others above or on fb saying otherwise don't really have a clue on how keeping the cam parked is necessary for driveability and chain longevity. Chain driving forces swap from one side of the chain to the other as rpm varies. Without a tensioner, this will extremely shorten the life of the chain. This is why everyone with a double roller has a slopped out chain with vary little run time. Mechanical engineering is over the heads of most all of the 3800 community, including vendors and the 3800 youtube mechanics. Had to post as the misinformation in the 3800 community runs deep day after day and it absolutely boggles my mind. Keep it up!

      Instead of the reason for the chain wearing out being cause people don't run a tensioner, maybe, just maybe it's because most people going to a double chain have much larger cams, stiffer valve springs, and rev higher more frequently. Also, it's a shame seeing someone from the 3800 community trying to convey different info and immediately resorting to passive aggressive insults.

      Well, looking at the original cam it would be safe to assume the bearings are just fine. The first bearing in looked pretty healthy too.

    The one thing I dont like about the GM3800 is if the water pump starts to leak it fills y our oil pan with coolant . GM didnt have to design it like that . Besides that they are excellent engines one of my favorite

    Tensioner is not needed on a double roller

      No, it doesn't press evenly on the double chain. ZZP is testing a new one for them, finally.

      @dezldave961 Have worked for the community since 06 and wouldn't recommend something that doesn't work or would present an issue in terms of reliability. Stock tensioner has worked in every customer build and personal since 06 without failure. I'd also be willing to bet my projects go harder than 99% of the guys still modding the platform. Stock tensioner is more than adequate to get the job done!

    One BIG mistake you made in pulling the balancer...never use a "grab" type puller on a harmonic balancer...you can pull the outter ring from the balancer itself, because there is a rubber portion between the two. You should ALWAYS use a proper balancer puller that uses screw in bolts to the balancers main body.

    • @The3800Daily
      @The3800Daily  8 месяцев назад

      Yes thanks for being attention to this. Unfortunately I couldn't find a tool that would work with the bolt in format

      You're welcome. And one more thing I forgot to mention...that sensor was the crank sensor, not the cam shaft position sensor. There is a slotted ring around the large portion of the balancer that regulates the signal from the crank sensor. And thise little rectangular pieces in the crank and cam snout are what's called keys, they keep the cam and cam gears in place (and in sync)...they aren't magnets. Not being a nit picker,just positive correction.
