  • Many games like the sims focus on modern clothing and young characters, but paralives is building into a different direction with a new paramaker showcase where you create characters of all ages and with some 70s retro fashion. Here's why this is important for paraloves development and could even translate into their focus for live mode gameplay.

    Other info:
    When paralives was first announced, there was a lot of excitement building into how this simulation game from an indie studio could be a new game like- but different- than the sims. But though there are many complaints about sims 4 gameplay, every new life simulation game is met with criticism after its announcement- especially paradox's life by you, and, later on, maybe INZOI, the Korean simulation game.
    Stay tunes for news, updates, pack reviews and commentary about paralives, sims 4, life by you, inzoi and more.
    Paralives FAQ

    “The name Paralives is a reference to parallel lives, allowing players to live different virtual lives and build homes to stage them.”
    How many people are working on Paralives?

    Paralives is really improving with their parafolk. The skin coloring is more realistic, I love the versatility of old parafolk. It feels much more realistic than the Sims. The fact that they're doing this right does give me hope that they'll apply the same level of detail to the gameplay. We'll see...

      Sims is not supposed to be realistic, I'm pretty sure that paralives won't have such things as grim reaper, witches, mermaids, fairies, werewolves etc. Sims is all about creating your story and you choose which path you will go, fantasy or not

    You could have a parafolk who takes good care of themselves age gracefully, and another with a partying, hard-living lifestyle could age horribly

      yeah, that was part of what I was thinking too- in an ideal world, it'd be a mix of lifestyle and genetics. To be clear- I don't need it or expect it but that would be so cool to see in some game ha

      Taking care of yourself means little. My paternal grandfolks (neither drank/smoked) aged quite differently, my grandpa did not go completely grey/white until he was in his early-mid 80s and he is still alive (born in 1928) and he is not completely bald on top either. My fathers (age 67, no alcohol/non smoker) hair is still very dark with a smidge of salt and pepper and not bald on top either. His dads, dad was similar, photos of him at the end of his life (died age 76) he still had mostly very dark hair as well. My granny was the opposite, she always looked older than she was, even as a teen and looked 130 when she passed away from Alzheimers at 90. She went full-on grey by 50. So obviously, my dad (looks like grandpa) is aging like his dad, but his younger brother (only sibling left and looks like granny) is completely grey already and people don't even think they are siblings because my uncle (64) looks about 75 or older. We don't know about thier other sibling, he passed away from cancer in the 1980s, but he looked like grandpa as well. Genetics is a big factor, more so than whether or not you run marathons, drink protien shakes or need to lose 10 pounds.

    • @TheDawnofVanlife
      @TheDawnofVanlife 8 месяцев назад

      @@rosameryrojas-delcerro1059Taking care of yourself means a lot percentage wise, it's just not any final determining factor. You as an individual could do 'all the right things' and have 'all the bad luck' but percentage wise you can improve your chances through changed habits. Also, there is no linear line. Gray hair and balding can be genetic for example and there are diseases that are random. That being said, even an ill person born with a lige-limg ailment who generally takes care of themselves with their means and limitations is still MORE likely to recover or have a healthier longer life even with said ailment better than someone who doesn't. People who smoke are more likely to have lung problems then someone who doesn't. Also life is short, but also life is long. If you spend 20 years living wild, you may only be able to turn it around a little at the end even if you are living as well as possible for the next 30. And the formative years where your parents mostly controlled your start may or may not have had adverse affects that are never reversed.
      At the end of the day, more likely doesn't mean 100% full proof. Just more likely than not A will lead to B, but there's always a small chance it won't because life is just unfair like that.
      Games really can only account for so many variables. And they have to have some factors to program. But most people who run marathons on a regular basis are generally healthier individuals even if they gray early or whatever. Protein shakes in overload aren't actually as good for your as real protein. That's a 'health food industry' lie btw. It is mean to be a supplement to a pre-existing healthy diet that already has healthy proteins in it.

      @rosameryrojas-delcerro1059 thank you for saying this!!! All this new age skincare marketing is just that, marketing. Genetics play a massive role in how you age. The products can help, but it's not a solid science. Stressing about aging will age you faster than anything.

    I think decades players are gonna have a ton of fun with this game. I hope they take the same approach to technology in the game, my main one being don't hardwire the PHONE and COMPUTERS into the UI. Make it as easy for actions to be done through the newspaper or mailbox or housephone or even a noticeboard as owning or buying a phone computer. They don't have to have tech for every decade and can still design for 'the world today', just don't make it a hack to have to overcome the mobile phone to play something like a 60s or 80s playthrough. I would love it if Paras had to buy a cellphone and the player could decide when their kids get one instead if it being hardwired into being born into the game. That way in any future modding it's just giving specific control to any object they want for certain commands.

    • @rubys.shibanigans
      @rubys.shibanigans 8 месяцев назад +22

      Yeah I'm not a fan of the baked in modern tech either. I like playing themed games sometimes and it's really hard to do so if your character is born with a phone attached to them. It limits the player's creativity. I understand that you can't please the entire player base but it makes it easier if the phone is optional rather than something your Sim has to have. Plus I dislike that it's free, it should be a purchase like everything else. Obviously that's just one example.
      In Sims 2, you have *some* limitations, but at least, with creativity they can be circumvented. For example, some clever people made like a scroll or bird instead of a (wired) phone to be able to invite neighbours so that it fits better a medieval type of game.
      I'll try to remember to give them that feedback on Patreon!

      @@rubys.shibanigans Sims 2 also has a mobile phone you can buy from a kiosk which always made me happy. I got to make giving my teen their first cellphone a gift. Even if playing ‘modern’ tech (in Sims 2 terms) I can choose how and when the parents gave them a cellphone…or if they bought it for themselves.

With a few exceptions. ( for example I had at least one or two fave characters that were different from the other Sims I usually played.
      Depending on what Sims game you had though , you had to use mods aka "CC" for certain bodies like for example I think Sims 1 only had one body type but I could be wrong , it's been a long time since I played S1. But it's probably true for the newer Sims to have a variety of body types.... at least I believe so , please forgive me if I'm mistaken. )

Plus also, it adds an extra layer of time depth to the game because fashiom changes over time, and the ones in that generation typically keep wearimg that style, so it makes the elders look more outdated in fashion (when really their style taste is probably much better, they just dont pull it off as well anymore lol)

    I love all the care and focus they've put on aging - in the Sims (especially Sims 4) the older life stages seem almost like an afterthought and often times they won't fit into a lot of my favorite clothing pieces once they become an elder. I want to have fun with my older Sims but it's hard to care sometimes when the game itself doesn't seem to care about them.

Also, free expansion packs, although that sounds too good to be true, hence the trauma from the old competitor.. The Sims 4... but I have hope. Paralives looks like it's receiving real authentic TLC from the Devs. Just like how Sims 2 and Sims 3 had amazing details and world exploration. And I love that you can give them middle names and nicknames and the skin colors for tanner or darker skin is beautiful. I also feel like their Para-language needs more tweeking or personality to it and more voice options, but the game is still under construction, lol. We'll have update patches, I'm sure. I'm just really excited about this game 😊❤!!! It'll be so amazing once its complete. Although it already looks amazing in beta.

    I love all of these assets for different Paras. I am not personally a giant fan of 70s style patterns or jumpsuits, but even in The Sims 4, I use a lot of them for my Sims. So in terms of variety, I'm always happy to see more rather than less.
    As someone who works with seniors, I love how they're approaching aging. I've worked with loads of seniors and they definitely age at different paces in different stages of aging (someone in their 70s is going to have fewer wrinkles and marks than someone in their 90s or early 100s in most cases). I think they're working toward a variety of ways to make senior Parafolk look realistic and expressive of their style/personality through their clothing if that's what they want. Not all seniors are hyper attuned to fashion or prefer proper cuts/fits in their clothing, but for ones that do I see some really nice options here. With that being said, in the past from what you've shown of Paralives, there are also plenty of options not quite as form fitting such as cozy sweaters and vests and such.
    I don't really have too much else to say since I'm not a fashion expert, but every time you show Paralives content, I like what I see and appreciate that they're continuing to add new stuff, improve things, and show their community the progress they're making.

    I commented about this on their old post about elders, but the eyes are really ruining it for me... as you age, you lose that dark circle around your iris, until it disappears completely. these elders look like they're young people with movie prosthetics, or old people wearing anime contact lenses. either way it's uncanny. it's a small nitpick but I think that small change would make a big difference. also not a fan of how the patterns and textures stretch and distort on the clothing... buuuuut all that said, they're doing a great work and I'm excited for every update, they're really working hard

    I am glad they will give a choice on how wrinkled our Parafolks when they get older, but I would like also to not be forced to make every older, say female Parafolks breast sag or males or females having suddenly really wide hips, because not all people have any of that when they are older, it often more then anything has to do with their lifestyle, like if they were athletic and ate well, they may not get the wide hips or saggy breasts, which yes men can get that too a bit.
    The one thing I hate about playing elders in The Sims is that you are forced even with TS3 or TS4 where you can better shape their bodies, we are forced to have a even a really athletic person have really wide hips and sagging, which isn't realistic really. I already brought this up in the comments of a recent Life By You video on their channel, because I had just recently been trying to makeover an elderly Sim and was angry over not being able to change the Sims body shape hardly at all, like even when just becoming an Adult, they place limits on how you can shape their bodies, like everybody is the same. Which apparently is pear shaped, no matter whether you were thin and athletic your whole life, it won't matter you will still end up pear shaped once your an Elder, but you can also see the signs of it with an Adult Sim.
    So I do hope both Paralives and Life By You will allow us to design are characters more the way we want and not just have every elder be the same by default and not be able to be changed hardly at all! The only thing TS4 did better was not having their voices change, because I know of plenty elders who don't even sound any different from when they were in their 20s. Like Secretary Of State Madeleine Albright, which I had recently watched a show where she made an appearance on as herself, she had this very youthful voice even in her 80s, but in the other Sims games the elders always had shaky voices. Sure many people do have different voices as they get older, but just like with the way they look, it's not everyone!
    Back to Paralives, I really wish they didn't make those of us not donating to them wait for info on the game, I get they want to give their Patreon paying members a perk, but it doesn't make those who aren't giving them money, very excited for the game, when they have to wait 3 or 4 months sometimes to know about the new changes that were made. I mean I would think those giving them money would still do that even without that being one of the perks.
    Being able to see new changes in Life By You on a weekly bases, since they changed the early access from August last year to March 5th this year, makes me very excited for that game, a lot more then getting nothing more then a few pictures most of the time from Paralives every 3 or 4 months. I get that they aren't being made by a successful game company, but in some ways that's a good reason to show more and not put it behind a paywall or make you wait for months because you didn't pay!
    And I would have liked to have seen how they make an elder version of an athletic Para, not just Para's with a few extra pounds, which kind makes me figure they will do the same thing The Sims does, and force even a thin athletic Para to become pear shaped once they become an elder at least. 😒

    • @SimmerErin
      @SimmerErin  8 месяцев назад +2

      agreed about how bodies change. for some it may change this way- which is fine!- but everyone changes differently and I'd like to see more variety in more games as to what that looks like. as with all ages, there's a lot of body diversity for older people too.
      I have to disagree about the waiting. Patreon more or less requires perks, and that is one. It's very normal to do so.

    Well elders also have the option of face work now adays. Ask Madonna in her sixties and she would pass for early forty year ol' porcelain doll look. Well she thinks so. Again Erin the last scene at 7:51 to 7:59 is what sold me on the game originally. Remember those scenes with Maggie's apartment and the airplane passing in the sky in one of them. It's getting further and further away from what they originally had proposed in game styles for us. So we'll see where it goes but I'm not hopeful. They are using Unity game engine and that can handle to colorful 2D animation really well. Look it up and you'll see what mean. So I'm left in a quandary wrapped in question delivered in an enigma - as to why they are going in the direction that they are. Since they have a game engine that can handle a lot of the grunt work of animations preparation and physics. Take a look at what Unity offers and see if I'm wrong. Oh well, let's hope for the best. Later Erin, and nice report.
