Very interesting video. I am a direct decendant of Frederick and the Panorama fire was devastating. I'm quite elderly myself and have spent a large amount of time and effort trying to "connect" with Frederick since there is so little that the fire didn't destroy. I made trips throughout the Yucatan and Chipas area retracing the steps of his time there. I worked for years as a professional illustrator and in all that time, even with my bachelor's degree in art, have never come close to the works he created of the Maya ruins. Even drawing the ruins myself from the same vantage point that Frederick occupied. He never considered or ever referred to himself as an artist. He was an architect. He had a way of infusing a mysterious and romantic mood into his work that describes how one feels when in the presence of these ruins that my own drawing lack. Whether he likes it or not he is a true artist. History has overlooked him pretty much. But programs like this video are restoring his legacy. The Phoenix is breaking free and finding life in the midst of the fire.

Very well done. For more detail about Catherwood (and Stephens) read "Jungle of Stone: The Extraordinary Journey of John L. Stephens and Frederick Catherwood and the Discovery of the Lost Civilization of the Maya," published by Harper Collins in 2016. In addition to the narrative of their travels together, there is an entire biographical chapter on Catherwood -- his childhood and travels, his family and divorce, his time in New York, his relationship with Stephens, and the two men's building of the first railroad across the Isthmus of Panama.

I did enjoy this history, because i live in Merida Yucatan Mexico, and i know about Mr Catherwood and his travel to visit Mayan Ruins here back in those days (1839 and 1840) according the book "Incidents Of Travel To Yucatan". In new York City he met a Mexican friend (Yucatecan one): Mr Simon Peon and he told Mr Catherwood about his Hacienda named Uxmal, where he can found Mayan Ruins. Later on Mr Catherwood decide to visit Yucatan. I Would like to know if both met in a Cafe in Fulton Street in New York.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I have read of Mr. Peon as well, but I'm not sure where exactly he met with Mr. Catherwood in New York. I'll do some research and if I find out anything I'll let you know!
