Early arkham games Harley is great too, I really liked that interpretation and VA delivery. Yes, I also liked that she's sexually attractive, it's part of her character design. Even in the animated series
Yeah. While it's true people like "hot" Harley, I think people really only liked when she was "hot" in a bubbly fun-loving ditzy kind of way. As soon as she, to paraphrase her creator Bruce Timm directly, "stopped being cute and cuddly and started being a nasty skank" I think it started her downfall in popularity. Margot Robbie did a decent job, but the movies she was in tended to do poorly, so clearly she didn't have enough popularity to bring in audiences, and when they just made her unappealing that was it lol
20:21 You're right about that. The company founders left a year or so before SS came out. And a lot of the dev team slowly left in the years prior to the founders leaving. It was basically a new crew throughout its developing years. And you know what the funnier thing is. The founders made a new dev company, with a lot of the team that developed the Arkham games
I'll never understand why people have such a problem with dentist appointments. Unless you have unholy gross gamer teeth, all they do is give you a clean and you go home. Big deal. Just stop drinking the monster energy dude.
Aaand I disagree with Asmon about Harley. Old Quinn was interesting and hot. She even had some of the best episodes in the 90's series. This one steered away from the OG too hard to make her 100% "strong woman" AND made her bland looking.
Someone needs to tie Asmon down and force him to watch BTAS so he'll stop repeating this Harley is not a good character crap. It'd be like saying the Joker is a bad character just because Leto sucked as him.
I like her as a character, but im sorry you are being too naive She is a crazy, attractive (in design) girl, she is basically made to be hot, and thats why she is so famous
Yes but if Harley isn’t hot, she isn’t interesting. It’s hard to explain, but the way she acts really only works if she is hot. A female character running around in a tight suit who flirts with all the men only works of she is hot. Otherwise it’s just cringe.
The fact that this took 9 years to make and the collective reaction to this ranges from anger and tiredness to just indifference and a bland "lol" is just painfull. WB and Rocksteady should really not be feeling well for the coming 12 months. If ever. This is something you never recover from and will forever humble you. Or should atleast.
WB is in the big 5 producing companies for movies. See there net worth. They are going to be fine. Rocksteady may get dropped/bought out by WB though if the next game fails.
@@MrHealingmonkhes talking on an individual level. The people in charge, they are the ones that change and get humbled, at least should (not the ceos, the management across the company). But if they have infinite money, i dont know if they care at that point.
I don't think this game took 9 years to make. There are many rumors of canceled games like Superman Game and others. It's like saying wonder women took 6 years. There is a lot going on. We have no clue. At one point, they were talking about selling the gaming division. Meanwhile, mortal kombat studio moves like business as usual. There are rumors that dlc isn't selling well for mortal kombat 1. So, dlc expansion and future dlc is canceled.
If Rocksteady really wanted to make a looter shooter, the would have made a looter brawler. Five Arkham games, two Mordor and three Spider-Man, and that combat system is still fun af.
Please, all DC knows how to do now days is using it's franchise to insult their viewers. From Teen Titans GO, Harley Quinn, Creature Commandos and so much more.
25:20 This is why live service games suck. Hogwarts Legacy doesn't need to be perfect; it just needs to be fun because you'll play it, finish it, and enjoy it. But with a live service game, you're supposed to play it for years-or at least that's the intention. If you're going to invest years of your life into something, it better be damn near perfect.
The dude saying that programmers only do what they're told is on point. A programmer is told what to do, then figure out how to do it. It is literally not their job to question if making the button red or blue makes sense. Their job is to make the button red or blue as told. It's the designer's fault. Sincerely, a programmer.
yeah I don't agree with Asmon on that one either. I'm a regular frontend dev (not senior or UI/UX designer) and I might make a suggestion that "that button shouldn't be placed there or have X color" most of the time I'm just told to implement it. And if I deviate from that because I think the way I should do it is better, I'll get reprimanded. So no, the regular devs aren't to blame for making bad decisions. Now there might be bad devs there who don't really know wtf is going on, but even then its still a management failure for hiring bad devs.
They committed to 4 seasons or something of the sort at launch to raise the hype hence they closing it after this last release ... Lawsuits otherwise which would only have increased the losses they recorded on this game!
They were bound to the first 4 seasons since people who pre-ordered were promised at least that amount. But yeah, that was literally the only reason it was kept afloat.
2:17, Nah, that's an inaccurate assumption. Harley Quinn is one of the most popular DC characters in the world even today. In fact, current trends show that she's arguably the most popular American comics character over the last 30 years, and she's a certified pop culture icon. That's before Margot Robbie first played her in S******e Squad. She was enormously popular even in the 90's cartoons. It's not even debatable.
@n4n4sh1_ Its not just because she's hot there's characters just as hot as her but dont get the same amount of attention. Its something else her character does that pulls people in. Zatanna, Starfire and few others I think look better.
Most studios are in a ''ship of Thesseus'' nowadays. Bioware, Rocksteady, Rockstar (somewhat I hear) and CDPR only to name a few. The people that made the games that gave those studios their accolades are for the most part gone for multiple reasons; and let's face it the people that replaced them ''can't wear their jockstraps''.
@@PadaV4college grads with a clear agenda and a lack of understanding of why the games they grew up on are good and so they're naraccistics who think they can better than the originals. every single time, this happens to film too
24:20 here asmon is having a fundamental misunderstanding between design and implementation. The programmers are just putting down code to achieve what the designers want, at least in AAA (indie you see designers and programmers being the same people alot of the time, but AAA likes to silo those roles apart). Bad design choices are the responsibility of the game designers, not the programmers. A programmer can't necessarily implement something, notice it's bad, let the designer know, and then have that thing change and frankly they don't have the time to do that. If you're a programmer under crunch you are just laying out code to get a ticket done, then moving on to the next ticket. It's more on the management than anyone else, as they impose and enforce crunch which inherently erodes communication between departments and sucks the soul out of art and fun. Forcing things to happen quickly leads to snap decisions that cannot be reconsidered and they all build up into a residue of sludge that the player has to deal with until it gets patched out (we promise it'll get fixed, definitely, management will definitely prioritise that).
It is all down to management. That or governors. It really is the same thing. If you force the hand of workers to play games to not be yelled at for underperforming? Then guess what? You are going to have workers playing the workers games of check-boxing and meeting quotas. There are so many instances of going directly against what should be the main goal and interests... As a example. If you do not spend all of the yearly budget? Then next yearly budget is going to be smaller, because clearly you do not need the budget. So what is the result? The goal becomes to overspend the budget on pointless and wasteful things to simply keep what budget you already have. No point in being efficient and smart with your budget. It is rather a better thing to do the complete opposite. Programmers are seen as a waste of money. Everyone is moving to Unreal Engine... Not only is there only 3 people doing the coding of the game needing maybe 20 coders to catch up with the crunch and mismanagement. The 3 programmers have to settle with 5 incompetent environment designers doing awful broken coding for the game. Not only that. But the 3 programmers have 7 layers of fun management to get approved a single little code change. And if you have say 8 'programmers' on the team/game? Then guess what? You have 5 programmers that is hiding the incompetence behind the 7 layers of management. Given a task to do? That maybe would take half a day to do? Sorry. That will be 3 weeks of work. HOW? It is going to be 3 weeks, coding is complicated. Or the management is the one that makes it complicated... yes... And when trying to get the rats to show that it really is incompetence, or lazy waste of time for a paycheck? (can you blame this people for not being the least interested in this games.) Then you have 7 layers of management that is so risk averse and more then happy to fire and threaten anyone for discrimination. Even now it was all about how someone not fit for the role is either being unable themselves to get anything done due to the 7 layers of management being risk averse of code changes. Or literally anything! The end result is the same. DEI. If you let slackers and politics/games become the main focus for workers? Then no wounder DEI finds a grate home in the gaming industry. There is a new game released this year that exactly simulates how DEI is nothing new. Dale & Dawson Stationery Supplies. Imagine how the modern office structure would look like. In this game you only have 1 manager. How about 7? And where you need to get code permission from a voice actor or some stupid shit. Yes, programmers needing a voice actor to agree to world streaming code. This is the year 2024. A joke that we are living in. Why a voice actor? Because, shit you not, have nothing better to do. Yes. 8 levels of management. You can not re record the same voice-lines for 7 years. You can try! Instead, why not be a game manager going all over the place and putting fingers into every aspect and such? You should do it like this, this is offensive, we can not do it like this because my tummy ache said so! The voice actor was the one fiddling with all the aspects of the game for years. Everything from dialog to world streaming code. Who else is better suited but this one, know it all, smart ass? Noting against voice actors. It might as well have been a Tumbler artist that was hired into a role. But then... A Tumbler artist usually can find something to draw instead of messing with world streaming code for fun... How could there possibly be 8 layers of management? Well... That is the funny part. The players and costumers should be a layer. Instead it is the investors having a say in everything. Do I need to elaborate more on how screwed the industry is? Try and have a bunch of random investors be in a meeting about game design. And then no longer wounder how DEI or loot-boxes ends up in games.

kind of insane watching these pro service games go offline. Gone are the days where a company makes a single player game and it's self sufficient all on its own.

23:30 actually if someone told me the higher ups told them to make it more colorful and have more screen effects for the additional dopamine hit like in game like bejeweled where you sometimes can't even see what's going on, I wouldn't doubt it one second.
People love Harley Quinn-not just Margot Robbie's portrayal of her, but the character herself. You can see this in the Arkham series, comics, and cartoons. She's the perfect balance of crazy, smart, and hot, and that's exactly why people love her as a character. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League completely failed to showcase those traits. Her outfit design was garbage, her hairstyle was trash, and she didn’t seem nearly crazy enough. Instead, she came off like some New Yorker woman who was just having a bad day. Harley is supposed to be wild, unpredictable, and clever, and none of that came through. For example, look at the cartoon where she captured Batman, hung him upside down above a piranha tank, and planned to hand him over to the Joker-a perfect mix of crazy and genius. In the game, though, they had her "beat" Batman, tie him to a chair, and then just shoot him. That’s just stupid. First of all, no way in hell is Batman-especially Arkham Batman-losing to a bunch of freaks. He’s been outsmarting and beating them for years, and now suddenly we’re supposed to believe they can take him down? That’s like thinking licking a frozen lamppost in winter is a good idea. And let’s be real: nobody who grew up playing as Arkham Batman wanted to see him die, let alone in such a pathetic way. The writers clearly dropped the ball on both Harley and Batman, making the whole thing feel like a complete failure.
Though i agree the mainstream probably heard about harley quinn and maaaaybe saw a few episodes of some batman series, knowing her from there, then forget about the existence and saw the Margot Robbie version.
The problem was from the start most fans do not want to see heroes get killed so you are targeting a specific group of fans. Then you made it into a looter shooter which does not make sense (aside from Deathshot) and it's a live service which means you cannot play it offline.
"Hey look buddy, I'm an engineer. That means I solve problems, not problems like 'What is beauty?' Because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems, for instance: how am I going to stop some mean mother Hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous be-hind? The answer, use a gun, and if that don't work... Use more gun. Take for instance this heavy caliber tripod mounted lil' old number designed by me, built by me, and you best hope... Not pointed at you." -Engineer from TF2
What a surprise..NOT!! Warner Bros sold the premium edition that included 4 seasons of content, it was obvious from the start that it was going to be killed after Season 4 since Warner Bros did not want to have to refund players.
I would argue Veilguard was Bioware still chasing trends. Its pretty clear there are signs the game at one point was going to be a games as a service that ultimately got ripped out. So hopefully that means if Bioware can go into Mass Effect with the right mind set from the get go we get a good Mass Effect game. Certainly no guarantee as the rot that had the company chasing trends might have infected too deeply at this point.
Its crazy to think that months before the release, everyone already gave tons of feedback of what they did not want in the game. They refused to listen and thats a multi million dollar mistake. I don’t know what they were expecting when the gamers telling them they don’t want what they were selling
I used to love BioWare but I'm not touching Dragon Age. My view on BioWare is that they were dealt a s*** hand, but they also played that s*** hand poorly. I know most people won't agree with me, but I really liked Anthem and thought it had a lot of potential, and Mass Effect Andromeda had a cursed launch but after they fixed it it was a pretty decent game. The part where I feel like they were dealt a bad hand was in that Mass Effect Andromeda had to follow up one of the most famous gaming trilogies of all time and the bad will from its poor execution of the ending. Ever since they've been struggling to find a way to be relevant again. Other companies have been able to recover from worse and BioWare, IMO could have saved Anthem and ME:A with some better decision making. Dragon age, however, represents the culmination of a series of bad decisions that may now have snowballed into the death of the company
@NiceDiggz That's not what he's referencing, though. He said the insomniac ones, and if we are going that far back, pretty sure batman 89 had a game out before Spiderman 2001. He describes it like the Batman Arkham Games were inspired by the insomniac Spiderman ones In which the first entry came out after the batman Markham games had wrapped up.
I'm at the 8:43 I want to say this. It truly is chasing or being the killer of other games that destroy companies. Also chasing money in the worst way. It's the reason why I stopped playing dota 2. It became more of a sport than it became a game. And that's why I don't play RTS games anymore because it became a sport same with some shooters. It's a solid reason why some franchises either become small or die out. It's because they're trying to chase a high.Or be the killer of other franchises.
Yeah, he doesn't know the story behind Harley's popularity. It started way back in the 90s when her Batman TAS version become a fan favorite, so far that she was even included into the main DC canon. Even the Rocksteady version from Arkham asylum and city were popular way before Margot Robbie was cast. Margots attractiveness didn't really make the character more or less popular.
The bester Looter shooter was sunset overdrive, by insomniac games. Blending all types of movement, each gun being insanely unique, and a pretty good story overall. It's a shame that studios don't look at past successes, and base any decisions or molds because of them.
Of course the same developers of arkham are not the suicide squad develeopers. The good developers have all been let go or left and have been replaced by DEI hires. They have know idea what the actual consumer wants in a video game. Focus more on woke BS instead of good story.
To think that Borderlands 2, a +10 years old game is a more complete and well rounded experience, for singleplayer and multiplayer than any other looter shooter right now. Is baffling not seeing that level of quality right now.
To think people who actually play spend time in end game realize only specific guns are viable and the end game is complete dog shit. Most people only view borderlands story and dlc. The end is always crap and game devs nerf everything into the ground. History always repeats itself.
That is pretty damning for Gearbox as well. In 2 tries they have failed to match BL2 now. I don't know how BL4 will turn out, but it might be make or break for the franchise.
My buddy bought the game on that huge sale for $4 a few days ago. I giggled at him but he said it was only $4. I texted him the article and giggled more
It's not a good thing that this lasted longer than Concord. It means WB games is less realistic about the gaming market than Sony. WB should have shut this down in the first month. Continuing the game only added to the cost, and potentially ripped off more customers.
Why do people never mention, that the studio devs always changes over time? After Anthem, most devs who created the prior single player games were gone, so it's no wonder Failguard did happen. The devs who did Redfall worked on single player games like Dishonored, Prey and Deathloop before and they got forced to make a live-service game. A couple of devs already left during development and many others had no interest in making this game and so they only did the bare minimum of work.
Yes, programmes programme games to the specification they are asked to. What's difficult to understand about that? Are they supposed to do all this extra work so they can give completely different options that weren't asked for?
The gameplay of vampire survivors, the graphical fidelity (and simplicity) of Space Marines 2, the world building/story telling of Outer Wilds or Fallout New Vegas. These are some shining beacons that I hope inspire future game devs. There are so many different ways to make a great game, and gamers are parsing out the derivative cut-and-pastes at a MUCH faster clip than they used to.
I work in software development and sometimes customers want some specific feature. This is most of the time a good feature, but sometimes we get a request that is not good. We tell the customer and my leadership will just tell me to do it. So we do it and then the customer is not happy with it because it was a bad idea. So we need to revert the changes. When this happens, I usually get a very detailed spec from the customer so I know we do 100% what they asked for.
A machine gun that turns into a lazer gun after 5 consecutive kills, a revolvers that shoots a rocket with aoe damage after 3headshots, an assault rifle that gives you bouncy bullets when you reload on the last five bullets or less without emptying the clip, there 3 fun guns out of the top of my head, why can’t they make fun guns?
With Bioware, they used to focus on great singleplayer games. Being forced to online is already very difficult, and asking a singleplayer team to make a live service is even harder, it is just very different with how things work

We did like Harley, just the Harley from Batman the animated series
Early arkham games Harley is great too, I really liked that interpretation and VA delivery. Yes, I also liked that she's sexually attractive, it's part of her character design. Even in the animated series
Or the actual Arkham games
Margot Robbie did a decent job, but the movies she was in tended to do poorly, so clearly she didn't have enough popularity to bring in audiences, and when they just made her unappealing that was it lol
exactly, I liked her in BTAS, and I really dislike Margot Robbie.
Who thought that new Harley is even cool? Only one Harley the clown Harley and no other.

I would agree with him. She was never interesting to me. She's just a crazy Joker sidekick without interesting abilities or personality.
I like her as a character, but im sorry you are being too naive
She is a crazy, attractive (in design) girl, she is basically made to be hot, and thats why she is so famous
Yes but if Harley isn’t hot, she isn’t interesting. It’s hard to explain, but the way she acts really only works if she is hot.
A female character running around in a tight suit who flirts with all the men only works of she is hot. Otherwise it’s just cringe.
WRONG!!!!
