    I received a code for a free copy of Keys From the Golden Vault, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on the book overall. Does it have heist mechanics? Are there a lot of new magic items and monsters? I also previewed the first adventure in the anthology.
    Thanks for watching!

    I should point out that in Prisoner 13 there is some "alertness" mechanics, as well as Patrol routes, and how that plays with the overall "alertness" of the prison overall. Definitely should look into that!

      The lack of press is most likely due to the OGL mess.

      @James Chapman DragonLance had a huge push because it was the first DL book we got since 3rd edition. They knew fans would eat up the DL 5e Book. This is like any other Adventure book has been other than DL. I see no difference in advertising or hype.

    A DM could have the Party working for The Golden Vault vs an NPC Party working for Acquisitions Incorporated.

  • @KevinVideo
    @KevinVideo Год назад +14

    That's a neat concept for a heist, and could add some complications if you have a GoO warlock in the party. That could add a new layer of an issue, but it could add another wrinkle in the works for there being a second party trying to free it. Might be a bit much for a 1st level party though.
    Definitely more interested in the magic items and monsters.

    The moving McGuffin is a pretty classic trope in heist stories. As is the other team. So it does make sense to be their, but you would think it wouldn't need to be said. It would have been really nice if they have more then the two ideas.

    Why do I feel like a more useful source for learning how to run a heist RPG is Seth Skorkowsky’s video on running a heist adventure? It’s probably just my WotC cynicism but they’re not exactly known for providing decent GM advice.

  • @JackOfHearts42
    @JackOfHearts42 Год назад +6

    It would be cool if during the heist, everything goes wrong, but then you do this flashback type montage and let the player describe how it actually all went. It'd be like the reveal at the end of Oceans, where everything going wrong was actually all part of their (the characters) master plan that they (the players) didn't know about.

    I'm curious - is any player facing map, in any adventure, "wrong"? What I understand the maps for players are "in world" handouts, hand made by quest givers, etc. Is there an adventure where provided map does not 100% corellate to actual dm provided map, where players need to adapt to the fact the rooms are a bit different, or a door that should be there are not there?
    That's another cool complication that could (have?) been added.

    • @sjcaustenite

    Bleach… just the usual anachronistic awfulness that always results from WoTC trying to shoehorn a completely different genre into DnD. If I want to play a charlie’s angels/mission impossible knock-off there are dozens of far better rule sets out there to do that (five torches deep is a good one, so is Fiasco). And, if I want to insert a rehash of overused heist tropes into a fantasy game, I can steal a mission impossible plot directly. I don’t need to pay WotC for a sloppy re-write of a stolen plot.

  • @toddpickens
    @toddpickens Год назад

    First of all thanks for the video review.
    Full disclosure, I haven't even finished the video but this is driving me crazy. They actually refer to this person as a doctor? Not a scholar or similar? Doctor implies an entire academic structure within the world and system of licensing. Is this still a fantasy setting?
    And then key cards, seriously how about an amulet that nullifies the magical field or acts as a ward that enables you to pass through the zone without triggering the alarm. Any characterization that would be on model with the D&D universe would be better.
    Form is function in some cases and I feel like the terminology being used here is lazy on their part.
    I probably should have waited to watch the whole video before commenting 🤷‍♂️

    • @Phlickit
      @Phlickit Год назад

      I think this is a pretty minor thing and it's exceptionally easy for you to just say "The staff all have jeweled pins on their cloaks that allow them to pass the magical sigils". I think the language used is just to very clearly communicate the function to the DM so that they immediately understand what they do. I wouldn't use an actual key card when running this, but aside from the flavour, they're absolutely serving as key cards functionally.
      But yeah, the style of this one is a little more modern than some other adventures out there. There are some descriptions of outfits that feel more Victorian than Medieval, so you might need to just adjust the descriptions to fit your world if that's your thing. This book is trying to capture a certain feel, and it's closer to "James Bond in a Casino" than "Robin Hood looting the Castle".

    • @toddpickens
      @toddpickens Год назад

      @@Phlickit yeah that's kind of my point, it is a very easy. Which is why I find it all the more egregious. It's lazy riding expecting lazy thought from the player.
