Really digging on that color and fade, I really couldn't figure why the blade wasn't deployed as a dipping handle but who who cares, live and learn. The scales are too cool.
You did a killer job! I personally never would have thought about that colorway but the more I looked at it the more I dug it, it kinda reminded me of a desert sunset.
Nice! I just got the lime green Native 5 that I want to do a blue to green fade on and I'm glad I saw how you did it first! Can't wait to get my Native 5 and do mine now! Hope it comes out as awesome as yours did!
I know this is four years ago, but I just glad this exact dye job on my new Native 5 Salt Magnacut and it turned out amazing. I used the racing red synthetic Rit Dye and it worked perfectly. I did it exactly like you did in the video and I’m so happy. Mine wasn’t a seconds so I was a little nervous, but it worked flawlessly. Thank you 🙏
All done dying two knives. I used a quart mason Jar instead of a metal can and when the dye cools I'll put a lid on the jar and save it for more knives. Thanks for the inspiration!
I just died a pink native.... I pretty much dump the whole thing super quick and then worked on the blend and it did blend out pretty smoothly... Pink Knight blue rit ... purple result
Hot damn, well done! I've been grail-drooling over the native 5 salt for the past couple months, watching any reviews and vids I can to look for any issues I might be overlooking and came across this vid. I was already thinking of going brown scales but the fade To brown could be a cool way to go too. Great job, cheers!
@@inkiron3907 just did it today, yellow to brown, came out rad! If I could link a pic I would. I uploaded on reddit knifeclub, just sayin thanks for the inspiration!
Dang that is awesome! I just picked up 4 knives from the Spyderco Factory Seconds sale, 3 of which are gray Maxamet. I've never dyed scales before but I'm interested in doing something with the gray on those. The Maxamets are: PM, Para 3, & Native 5. I also might want to patina but blade like you did with your Manix 2 Maxamet. The 4th knife I got is a camo Para 3, which I'd also be interested in dyeing. Thanks for the info! 😃
SUp bro i dyed my pacific salt yellow in Shadow grey and it turned out Dark Burgundy !!! i love it !!! THanks for the Can tip !!! it was usefull !!!!! CHEERS FROM QUEBEC
Hey buddy great job! I just ordered a manix 2 in M4 and mint green FRN scales. Im gonna try this but M4 is not very corrosion resistant. Gotta be real careful! Thanks for showing your technique! 🤙
Someone else commented that could have opened the knife before doing this dunk into the dye. For LC200N it wasn’t a problem, but you should consider it for the M4! Tape up the edge so you don’t get cut. The steam is enough to deal with without a live edge in your hand
Personally I would have just took the scales off ransom wire through there and it would have been way more easier and you can prevent rust and other damage to your bearings or if there's a Spyderco sometimes they use spots for bronze washers which you don't want to ruin the elasticity on that on those❤
The whole time I’m thinking if your not going to dunk it higher than the pivot why not just hold it buy the blade and not expose it to the solution, good video though, well made good results, looks awesome
hi great job!!! looks awesome.. ive got several spyderco knives, will your method work on any steel.. or should i remove scales on other stainless steel knives in my collection??
Can it be done with food dye as well? Edit: it sort of works. I had a knife with dark green micarta scales. I had previously sketched a pattern into it with marker which had stayed so I put them in bleach before trying. Then I boiled water, put in a little vinegar, put in food coloring, and left the knife scales in. I definitely didn't leave them in long enough as they are faded but it definitely has a distinct color change(except the areas I had marked on, the marker wouldn't come off) overall if you want single color on micarta food coloring DOES work, it'll look similar to the way micarta always looks with a slightly faded pattern. I think it's pretty cool even though mine doesn't look at all professional
So far it looks the same as the day I dyed it and I’ve washed it with soap, water, and isopropyl alcohol multiple times. It seems to penetrate the plastic enough to last
Great job! How long does the dye last? Does it penetrate the nylon, or is it only on the surface? Like if you scratched the red spot, would yellow show? Thanks
My dye still looks the same to this day. I have washed the knife with soap and water, sprayed with disinfecting bleach, and swam in pools and the ocean without any fading. It definitely doesn’t rub off and minor scratches have not shown yellow under the surface. The dye appears to have seeped deeply into the plastic and is remarkably durable
ok now I want one lol. nice work. I always wanted the Caribbean but thought it was gonna be too big/heavy for edc. But i’m hooked on LC200N. Did you get the native as a downsized carry alternative to the Caribbean?
Save the vinegar for the French fries. It's not actually needed. I fell for that idea that it helps until I didn't have any vinegar and tried dying my scales in just dye and water. Honestly made zero difference
For this video I used the cotton version but it took like 30 min. The synthetic can do the same thing in about 5 min. I’d recommend the synthetic “Dyemore” for that reason

I did not disassemble my knife because it is made to tolerate corrosive environments like the ocean or a dye bath. I would take apart any other version of the Native 5 before dyeing. I used Scarlet RIT Dye for this
Just received my native 5 salt. Enjoyed the video. I’m thinking of dyeing the scales for mine as well. I saw you didn’t disassemble yours. I was just gonna dunk it in. Any issues Or recommendations?
I know your vid is a bit old, but I plan on dying my burnt orange spyderco. What would you recommend? I'm thinking red would be easy but something fancier is welcome.
Good work all around, especially on that Caribbean. The knife from factory is ugly as sin imo, but you made it awesome. I may get that knife after all. Ive never seen someone just dunk the whole knife. They usually take the scales off. I may have skipped over the explanation on that one. Are the salt models pinned construction?
@@inkiron3907 thank you for the reply and hopefully you don't scratch it up as looks amazing. But if do that would be nice to see if dyes all the way through
The blade tapers from the thumb hole to the tip starting right there. It’s not a crack, but it can sometimes look that way. Not sure why they chose to start it there but it’s not noticeable in use.

That vinegar steam will scorch your blade unless you cover it with tape. On D2 anyway.

You are correct. This knife happens to be incredibly corrosion resistant which is how I got away with sloppier technique
hi great job!!! looks awesome.. ive got several spyderco knives, will your method work on any steel.. or should i remove scales on other stainless steel knives in my collection??
I would remove the scales before dying them on most knives. This is a special knife in terms of corrosion resistance.
Awesome job
Thanks 😁
Not sure why you did not just flip the blade open and dunk it from holding the blade? Could tape cardstock over the edge if that was the concern.
Yep, others have said the same. This blade is wildly rust resistant so I got away with it
U probably could use like an brush to made the fade into the yellow
Maybe an air brush... I don’t have one unfortunately
Very cool. I just got an orange FRN Dragonfly in VG10. Any idea on colour choices on the orange FRN?
I think you could use red, brown, or black effectively. I aim to try a red/black fade in the future; it’s one of my favorite combos
.. Is the white vinegar necessary in The Dying process ?.
No, and it smells awful. RIT Dyemore works faster than the standard RIT liquid, so try that instead
Looks pretty great
Very cool! Why didn't you open the knife and dunk it holding it by the Spyder hole?
Because I was testing the rust resistance, but next time I’ll hold the blade!
@@inkiron3907 That makes sense. I was just curious. 😁
The yellow plastic straw, how *dare* you…! Joking aside, it was actually a perfect test/trial for the dye job lol

I don’t think so
Let us know if the dye comes off overtime. Ok?
So far so good and I even washed it with Isopropyl Alcohol twice 👍 will update if it changes though
Try holding it by the blade next time so you don't risk smudging the scale
Thanks 👍 will do
Also helps protect the heat treat on the blade I think.
Very cool!
Does the dye last or do you find yourself having do redo the job after a while?

Why tho yellow is the best color for plastic scales.
Dye always makes the handle darker. Yellow is good to start because most colors are darker than yellow! 😎

Definitely not for the LC200N model! And other models should work as well, as long as the blade steel doesn’t touch the dye

Killer handles. I don't get the point dipping the blade in
There isn’t, most blades should be opened for this process. LC200N is essentially rust proof though so I didn’t bother
