      I kept my broken one from when I was 5 and eventually fixed it. No power. The PSU DC cable had shorted to the braid and I had an AV adapter cable kit that matched the socket. I soldered it ok but it's a tight fit.
      I made a SCART cable which worked great on our Sony, but gets double vision on my Samsung TV/PC monitor upstairs so I lost interest.
      The tape belt had also become oval so didn't load games well until replaced. I think the head needs cleaning often with alcohol.

    I'm from the UK and it is always interesting to find that some of our old retro stuff can occasionally be rare in the States. Mind you - on my trips to the USA I loaded up on NES titles that were as common as muck to you guys but super scarce in the UK, that makes retro trips in other countries great fun. Ghosts n Goblins, £30 plus -unboxed for NES, $10 on your patch.

    It amazed me a few years ago that rare stuff in the UK was considered common disposable in Japan. Oddly talking to store staff in Japan revealed that the same devices as UK spec were coveted in Japan. I gave contact details to one store owner for my local games store as they had shelves full of gear they cant shift in the UK. The two stores set up a system where one would send JP spec and swap for UK spec. They sold each device for double what the native consoles sold for.

    Some nice finds indeed.
    I got a crystal xbox earlier in the year from a charity shop I volunteer at for £10 boxed with 2 controllers and splinter cell, also got a gamecube from them for £10.
    Also found a S&R PS4 for £10 the other day on FB marketplace, there's plenty of deals to be had you just got to be in the right place etc.
    I often take a look around local charity shops and car boot sales to find games/dvds that I can flip at CEX for instore voucher credit, although most people have wised up to what they have so the rarities are really hard to find and you may be able to get a slim margin for other things.

    That ZX Spectrum +2 keyboard fault *could* be a simple fix. I’m pretty sure it has a two layer membrane (mylar) in it, if you part the layers and give the contacts a wipe over, then put it together and re-assemble the keyboard, it will quite likely work. I’ve done this myself a few years ago.

    The original rubber keyed and 128k toaster Spectrums are the ones valued by collectors in the UK. The models with built in tape recorders are Amstrad manufactured and don't have the design style of the original Sinclair computers but are more practical. Amstrad made a very unsuccessful Europe only console GX4000 but sold it with faulty power supplies

    • @BorderlineOCD
      @BorderlineOCD  Год назад +1

      Yeah I gathered this while looking at the available models and reading up about it. I really liked the appeal of the all-in-one unit though as a first comer to the system. I guess given I lack any nostalgia with it I didn't really mind.

  • @Adrian_Finn

    I recently fixed a master system 2 that only produced a black and white image, could be the same issue as mine, it turned out to be a bad crystal that had gone out of spec and couldn't produce an adequate colour burst frequency. I couldn't get hold of a replacement crystal so I did the DFO mod (Dual Frequency Oscillator) that uses a programmable CDCE913 clock synthesizer chip to generate the correct frequency and is mounted on a tiny PCB that is available online and is the same footprint as the original crystal, it is a drop in replacement.
    I also did the RGB and 50/60Hz mod on mine.

    • @BorderlineOCD
      @BorderlineOCD  Год назад +1

      Thanks very much for this info, very useful. Did you get the CDCE913 preprogrammed from somewhere or did you also get the programmer and do it yourself? I'll do a bit more research on this.

    • @Adrian_Finn
      @Adrian_Finn Год назад +2

      @@BorderlineOCD I programmed it myself using the programmer you build as part of project, search for DFO mod nfggames. I wired this in conjunction with the 50/60Hz Switch mod so I get the correct frequency selected when forced into PAL or NTSC. This was originally designed for the Mega Drive but uses same frequencies as Master System, I just had to reverse which frequency was selected when 5v is applied to the pad of the DFO by swapping the values around in the programming software since its the reverse in the Mega Drive.
      The PAL/NTSC Pin 57 of IC5 of the master system has to be lifted and connected to the middle pin of a SPDT switch, 5V and GND can be found local to IC5 and connected to the outer pins of the switch, A wire from the 5v side of the switch is also connected to the pad of the DFO) when switched to 5v it forces IC5 into PAL mode and sends 5v into the DFO and selects 53.203424 MHz (PAL frequency), when switched to ground it forces IC5 into NTSC mode and no voltage (not connected) on the DFO means it will select 53.693175 MHz (NTSC frequency). Hope all this makes sense, Also check out the rest of the thread for some essential info, like links to a more detailed thread and adding 22ohm resistor to programmer for better reliability.
      I believe there are similar projects knocking around, maybe prebuilt, this is just one I came across and went with. Maybe this could also be incorporated with a switchless 50/60Hz mod.

    12:06 that's the third ever (and second oldest still trading) CeX, which is on Tottenham Court Road (TCR) in London and opened in 1995, replacing the first ever one which had opened in 1992. The one on nearby Rathbone Place was the second ever (and very oldest still trading) CeX, opened in 1993.
    I went to both in 2018 after learning about them, when the TCR store still had its old silver frontage sign with Computer Exchange, "cex" and "buy sell exchange" on it, (but after the windows had been painted red), but I since saw on a The Retro Future or Elliot Coll video that it been replaced with the standard red national chain CeX frontage sign in 2019. I expressed my disappointment in the comments, and someone told me that the old sign had been put inside.
    Sure enough, at 12:12, they have recycled part of the old sign, albeit with added red, into some sort of "EST. 1992" wall piece thing. I'll take it!

    Just a couple of interesting points:
    CEX is actually not called C.E.X…… it is called SEX. Even in their tv ads they unbelievably call it SEX (odd I know !)
    You also said about the warranty being a couple of days when you buy from them, it’s actually 2 years. Everything they sell comes with a standard 2 year warranty. I have actually bought from them used rather than new from another retailer for the reduced cost plus that extra cover.

    Hey! Great to see you back online.
    Interesting that you gravitated to CEX, which is a store with a lot of important UK gaming history. Back in the late 80's/early 90's, the UK was undergoing a massive boom in Japanese/US imports, and one of the original/best stores was a little shop in London called the 'Tottenham Court Road [C]omputer [EX]change. This was a big player in the import scene, but eventually became a national franchise when the popularity of imports died down, and they sold more 2nd hand stuff.
    They are considered expensive over here, but if you're happy with what you paid, thats the only important thing.
    Did you manage to get a PAL Gamecube as suggested? The only variant that outputs native RGB 😀

      It feels like CEX basically stopped doing retro game stuff at all around the early 2000s and just did ipods and DVDs for a while, nice they've sort of gone back to their roots more recently, even if it's mostly second hand stuff rather than imports.

      @@icenode The reason they stopped doing imports was from direct pressure from Nintendo and Sony to ask them to stop selling them, as at the time NTSC imports would often come out before official PAL versions, "spoiling" the official UK releases, but they also blocked import games that you couldn't get in the UK in any form. One week my local CEX had things like Sin and Punishment JP boxed, the next all the imports were gone from the store. Think was about 2007 or so.

      @@BorderlineOCD you will need to swap out the PSU for a North American one for it to work without an adaptor. You can use your copy of splinter cell and a save game soft mod to edit the eeprom and change the region to ntsc. That'll get it working. It's likely a 1.4 so I would also tsop flash it so that it is region free but your really should miss it worth ntsc eeprom region so it can do up to 1080i with component or hdmi. Euro consoles top out at 480p if they aren't eeprom changed to ntsc.

    I have that exact model ZX Spectrum. Once you open it up you'll see that it isn't a very complex machine. If your only fault is the keyboard, there are a lot of sites selling replacement membranes but you might just actually need to cleanup your original membrane and socket in the first place. Good luck with games via tape. :) The more data they have, the longer it takes, Lotus Challenge takes nearly a full 20mins. There are flashcarts available that will allow you to load games instantly off of SD or CF cards.

I think that would be the easiest fix as the mainboard was still similar to the 16K/48K models and the keyboard was a simple ribbon attachment. They could easily come loose if owned by someone who got easily angry at games (!) Glad you got some bargains, sorry about the strikes and lastly I'm jealous of that sweet, sweet exchange rate you have right now.
