There are so many great drummers today, but the richness of His vocabulary, phrasing, studio and live experience, versatility and genial ferociousness are still one of a kind.
I don’t believe in greatest anything, but Vinnie is my favorite.
Vinnies capabilities and his style are unique in my opinion. Always an endless pleasure to watch and hear him play!
Vinnie is utterly magnificent .. Nobody has touched him since Buddy passed away. Buddy was the best we’ve ever had. Only my two cents, but I’m sure many of us would agree.
To me, yes, Buddy was phenomenal. But it was one dimensional and really just jazz/swing.
Vinnie has done it all.

Vinnie has to be the greatest...there has been no one else, in his life life time, that has had his name in the title of drumming videos, as much as him.
I don't even need to watch this to agree. He remains the only drummer I've ever heard who plays every genre of music as if it's the only genre he's ever played. Forever an inspiration

Disagree, respectfully. He is the only drummer who could pull this off: 1 month span he cut a straight jazz album with Herbie Hancock, rock album with Sting and a metal album with megadeath. There is no such thing a goat of drumming, But out of all the drummers ever, Vinnie is definitely the closest to being the greatest drummer ever.
I would rather say that Vinnie is my FAVOURITE of all time.

Vinnie had a goat quote one time I read....he said basically a drummer should just find a comfortable groove and practice it, and get in touch with it, fall in love with it until it's all they want to play. Vinnie!!
It's a matter of taste too. Some guys would prefer a particular drummer over another. What happens with Vinnie Colaiuta is that no other drummer in history has been or is able to do so many great things and do them really great: sightreading (like the direct to disc Bill Meyers album in the eighties), studio experience (a vast discography), stylistic versatility (Holdsworth, Megadeth, Sting, Corea, Los Tigres del Norte, McLaughlin, Faith Hill, Zappa, Hancock, Quincy Jones Big Band, etc.), technique (his teachers Richard Wilson, Jim Chapin and Gary Chaffee have said great things about him), groove and feel (more than forty years being hired to play for so many artists speak volumes), creativity (always comes up with fresh ideas), plus amazing ability to play complex arrangements including bizarre note groupings, artificial notes, polyrhythms in any time signatures. No other drummer has been or is that well rounded!
Not only his versatile influences, but also what he plays.. odd time fills, odd time signatures.... He's just a natural, born to play. I've never heard better.
Don't forget he also is the studio drummer on a Megadeth album. Most insane, technical, cross-genre drummer EVER.

i've wondered about it. he used matched grip with Zappa and Joni Mitchell, and then the next time after that where he used matched grip was the Songs and Visions concert in 1997. i'm not entirely sure if there's any notes about his rationale for switching between the two. i don't think we will ever know what grip he used for the Megadeth album, which is kind of cool. unless someone asks him specifically

In a one month span he record the album with Megadeath, a rock album with Stjng and a straight jazz album with Herbie Hancock. No other drummer could do that in a lifetime let alone in 30 days
The only thing is he’s never been the member of Yellowjackets band. He has been playing with the members of that band in various different situations for many different artists

The guy plays EVERY style like a master. Megadeath to Metheny! I mean, come on! Can sight read like no other. Has it all covered. A drummers drummer. Artists love working with him for what he brings to the table, no matter what style. And his pocket is one of the best also, no matter what style. Innovate chops, great feel, perfect time / etc. Truly one of the greatest drummers and overall musicians of our time !

The Yellowjackets ? That's new to me ... Which Albums were played by Vinnie ?
Vinnie can do anything. I mean, there's a lot of drummers who are versatile and can really play all genres, but Vinnie's proficiency and mastery is just second to none. I can think of a few who can match him but I don't think anyone beats him. So yeah, you could make the case that he might be the GOAT.

This started off good but nosedived when you went into his supposed career with the Yellowjackets. Vinnie was NEVER in the Yellowjackets. That was Will Kennedy and formerly Ricky Lawson RIP

Yes, they were a trio called Jing Chi and have recorded 2 CDs.
I don’t remember Vinnie ever playing with Pat Metheny either.
He was never in Yellowjackets as the previous poster said. The gig you’ve got footage of was a charity gig with Russell Ferrante and Haslip. It’s not Jing Chi either - that’s with Robben Ford and Haslip.

Even all the greats simply refer to him by his first name. There isn’t a more versatile drummer on the planet who can play any genre and sight read every complicated drum chart and play it to perfection the first few times through.
Having a picture of Travis Barker while talking about Vinnie LOL I mean I'll try and be nice and hold back, but that just blasphemy! When Vinnie was a kid he had to pay to *pay $* to see the tattoo freaks at the Circus, seriously, yep we actually paid extra $$$$ to see the tattoo freaks. Not knocking tattoos just saying our generation was different, not better just different. So yeah to see the tattoo freaks nowadays if free -- and sincerely that's super cool! Saves A LOT of money. Kinda like lol when we were kids pigs had nose rings so they wouldn't dig under the fence. Now we got humans with nose rings so *they* won't dig under the fence. Cool shat!! And cool vid btw! Peace
Please keep in mind there are many, many GOATs with respect to every instrument. Mr. Vinnie C. is on the level of Mr. Freddie Gruber in terms of versatility, and style.
At a certain level I don't know how you can name any one drummer over another. My personal favorite is Weckl. You don't hear him doing the variety of music Vinnie does and Dave isn't as explosively choppy but he's so damn musical and silky smooth.
Love Vinnie and Dave. Both amazing. Vinnie is so versatile obviously but Dave's smoothness, nuance, effortless swing just grab me. As amazing as Dave was in the 80s, he's gotten better and better and better with age. It's astounding! To me there's Buddy then there's everybody else. Dave may be at the top of that everybody else!

Greatness can be measured in many was. The number one criterion is innovativeness. In other words, did this person change or alter the course of music/drumming - conceptually and stylistically? Now think of this inversely, what preceded this person stylistically and conceptually? The answer to these two questions will unveil the true GOAT…….and you better “believe it.”

There is a guy on tiktok who 's beyond amazing. He has no real history in studio work or playing with many great artists. However, I think he is the GOAT. I don't know his name, but he is amazing.

Remember that Buddy was just a jazz drummer (great drummer) but Vinnie plays all styles💪🏽
