    I wanted to mention that I ran some experiments to see if different homemade solutions could effectively get the wax off of produce. I wasn't satisfied with the results, so I'm testing further. If you have any tried and true tips -- leave them below! I'll share my own results soon.

      Chitosan is the easiest wax. It can used as organic fungicide and repellent most bugs for fruit care treatment. For post harvest it can extend shelf life 5 days for freshly harvest mango, 9 days on Pitaya/Dragon Fruit, 18 days on snake fruit, up to 2 months on apples at room temprature

    • @sekenpolansky5008

      Chitosan devided in 2 types, Industrial and Food Grade. Both can be used to coat/wax our fruit. Food grade one is 2-3 times price than industrial. Usually the food grade one, applied for thin skin fruit or fruits that we use to eat the whole without peeling it skin like guava, rose apples, lemon and lime (can be extend the shelf life about up to 6 month if green harvest). Industrial chitosan used for peeled fruit like jack fruit, mangosteen, etc

      to remove wax in a natural non chemical way ..... squeeze a ripe lemon's juice into 1 liter of warm water and rinse the fruit you want to clean with it. the lemon is a natural oil and wax stripper without the nasty side effects of chemicals... natural vinegar will also help but vinegar leaves a slight after taste that you need to rinse again after removing the wax.

    For years I kept a worm composter in my classroom. Students would feed and care for the worms and learned so much in the process. One day a student discovered some 'trash' in the composter - a huge surprise. It was actually the remaining plastic coating from an apple half; the worms had eaten the apple but wouldn't touch the plastic, which was stretchy and crinkly much like produce bags at the store.

      With the possible exception of morphaline (and even then, lots of countries disagree), there is absolutely nothing in the video that suggests there's any reason to fear the coating. You should still wash your food before you eat it, but that's in order to wash away potentially harmful bacteria or parasites. The wax itself is totally harmless.

    • @komutsky1879
      @komutsky1879 5 лет назад +2

      @sheldon pereira It can be.
      There's a saying in medicine- the poison is in the dose. At high enough doses, pretty much EVERYTHING can kill you. Too much oxygen? deadly. Too much vitamin A? you're dead. Too much water? you'll be swimming with the fishes.
      Conversely, almost every chemical is totally harmless at low enough doses. You could add a tiny amount of cyanide to every single drink you ever drink for the rest of your life, and you will be totally fine. Hell, your own body is constantly making countless different potions, from formaldehyde to the active ingredient in bleach, chemicals that will pretty much kill all organisms (not just fungi). That's why simply stating that a food contains a certain chemical is utterly meaningless. The real question is what chemicals are found at sufficiently large quantities to have any effects, and whether those effects' risks outweigh the benefits.

    We're now fortunate enough in the UK to get unwaxed lemons, limes and oranges at most decently sized supermarkets, so i'll typically go for them. I have no regular farmer's markets around here so I sorta rely on my local stores. I know in some countries it would be strange to use wax, but we just can't grow citrus properly anywhere here, so it has to be imported.

    With some vegetables, I can understand why they use wax. With the ongoing war on plastic, a local supermarket recently stopped wrapping their cucumbers in it. The cucumbers on offer are now shrivelled, dry and awful, because I guess they didn't realise they still have to retain that moisture somehow. Citrus have natural oils that are inherently fungicidal, so wax isn't necessary for those in my opinion. Beeswax sounds like a great option, due to the natural antibacterial substances that bees use to keep their hives clean being present in the wax.

    Yet another very interesting video that has brought up US/UK differences. In the UK, the majority of citrus are labelled ‘unwaxed’; certainly all organic citrus is unwaxed. We are also brought up to wash fruit when we buy it because it’s rarely coated. Our apples, for example, are not shiny. Plums usually have their bloom still on them, as do other fruits, but I guess it’s true that the shelf life is shorter without artificial coatings. Do you refrigerate most fruit in the US? Here only bananas are kept in a fruit bowl full time; most fruit is kept in the fridge to preserve it until a few days before eating where it’s transferred to room temperature. Looking forward to the organic video as I’ve been brought up eating organic.

    • @TrueFoodTV
      @TrueFoodTV  5 лет назад +1

      Always love hearing from you, Thomas. It's true -- the variety of unwaxed produce in the UK is far greater than here in the US, and it may be a reflection of that tighter policy toward chemical coatings. Even with all the coatings, we still tend to keep our fruit in the fridge until eating.

    There was a lot of information presented on the types of wax, but very little (in comparison) presented about the emulsifiers and fungicides. I feel like the two were just glossed over and presented as "chemicals = bad."
    I'm usually very critical of people who go "chemicals = bad" since literally basically everything is made of chemicals. What matters isn't so much whether the chemicals are 'natural' or synthetic, but the dosage you get.
    I'd really appreciate if there was a follow up concerned about the specifics of the fungicides and emulsifiers. :)
    It's an interesting video either way, so keep up the good work!

      The main concern is the lack of regulations, many companies can just do their own biased research and the FDA will approve of it. Also many synthetic substances are known to bioaccumulate in bodies and the environment, and we don’t know what the long term consequences are and how they can be affecting our health and the environment.

    I used to work on an organic farm. And helped the farmer go through the process of being certified organic. I can tell you the process is not perfect and has many loop holes. While not all farmers take advantage of these and are instead dedicated to providing a quality and wholesome product, there are still those that do making it to be that you can't always trust the organic label. Because of this it is still best recommended to buy local from a trusted source. Thankfully there are changes being made to the organics regulations to eliminate some of these loopholes and provide more reliable and quality products to stores.
    Keep learning and growing and cooking fellow foodies.

    As a molecular biologist and food scientist, I am a firm supporter of foods that aren't "organic" (as well as GMO foods) because I know the science behind them.
    I really enjoy your videos, so I just want to say that if you'll do a video on "oragnic" and "non-organic" foods, PLEASE include the insights of credible scientists

      I specifically choose food that doesn't say "non gmo" even if it'sade from a crop that doesn't have a gmo variety yet. The anti gmo movement drives me crazy because there's no solid fact.
      One thing I will say is that there is a concern about lack of diversity within a crop which I understand.

    Thank you for telling us. I never knew, but it sounds typical of the FDA.
    Just like jellies quit using pectin, which I noted because my nails didn't grow morelike they normally do.
    Which like Bama jelly, in the 70's, this might just be me, but like the apple jelly, it had more flavor in the 70's than modern time. Which it wouldn't surprise me if they changed using something cheaper, eitheir a supplier or ingredient.

    Love your informative videos! One thing I wonder about is the economics of transporting fresh produce. I also live on the East Coast of America and I recently bought red bell peppers that were from Denmark. I can't understand how it is economical to transport such an easily grown produce from Denmark instead of, say, Georgia or Louisiana. Southern US states could easily grow red bell peppers nearly all year long.

      It's a topic I've often thought about myself. International shipping seems to be bonkers cheap -- you've heard, right, how fish might be caught somewhere like Iceland and it's cheaper to ship it to China for processing and then on to US groceries? I smell a topic for a future video!! Thanks for the recommendation.

    About the anecdote of the farmer
    There seems to be a big misconception about the effects of certain chemicals. Just because a chemical prevents a piece of fruit from going bad, does not in any way mean that it is harmful to us. The same goes for pesticides. Just because certain chemicals kill bugs, does not mean they do the same to us. Take coffein for example. In nature, plants use it as an insectacide, killing any bugs that come across it, yet it has no harmful side effects in us, in normal doses. You do not fall over and die just because you take a sip of coffee.
