15 Things I Learned In 2021

- A new growing season is slowly starting, and at this time of the year I find it useful to look back at the previous year, to identify some of the many things that I learned in and around the vegetable gardens.
Help me develop these gardens and make more videos through regular contributions / redgardens
Or use www.paypal.me/redgardens as a simple, once-off way to support this project and the time and energy that goes into making videos. Thanks so much!

Been following for 3 years now, and I still consider this channel to be a valuable gem. It's hard to find this kind of objective and factual gardening content nowadays.
Same it's a great channel
Thanks! Very good to know my approach to all this is valued!
Same same. An inspiration for investigation for a time of changes. Greetings from mexican semi-arid lands.
@@betrocoli7319 Hey there, in a place so very different from Ireland ... thanks!
This is my annoyance with gardening I've been growing veg for about 3 or 4 years and whilst it feels a long time it's only 3 or 4 lessons if you know what I mean, (and why videos like this help alot)
I absolutely love your videos. No intro and no begging for likes and subs before I have even watched. You explain the purpose of the video and get right to the info. I really hate it when a video says I will see/learn Process A, but first we need to make breakfast, feed chickens, fix fence, water pigs, and 25 minutes later we can start Process A after another lengthy explanation. Thank you for continuing to show your successes, failures, goals and obstacles. You have grown into an amazing garden over the years and I love it all.
Active engagement here from the US to help your analytics. Thanks for the vids.
Thanks for the engagement!
2021 taught me how to say NO with confidence and love.
The greatest lesson of my life ❤️☘️💪
Good lesson!
Woooow
I have been following you diligently for quite some time and I'm amazed by the power of knowledge you share with a passion and consistency 👌
Be blessed always 🙏🙏🙏
If even HALF the world had your thoughtful, analytical, measured, rational approach to situations and problem solving - the world would be a far better place! Thanks for these videos - they are an oasis of true calm in a crazy world! Fond greetings from Australia!
Thank you! What you describe is pretty much my main objective, but I would be glad of a much smaller portion of the world taking a more considered approach.
You're a total legend, have found your videos to be amongst the most detailed, truthful and realistically inspiring of all the big RUclipsrs in the world of gardening.
Ahhh, thanks!
Glad to stumble across your page and will be a subscriber. Constructively, you may want to look at the cadence of your speech... I do understand there is a large impact on attracting new persons. Best wishes. Your garden is inspiring!
@@ashleilarman2096 Thanks for the comment and the feedback.
@@REDGardens I enjoy the cadence. I find the videos relaxing and they are already detailed and relatively short for all the information provided. Not to say the above comment is wrong, opinions are subjective and I just have a different one.
@@JOHNOOH Thanks. I don't like listening to how I speak, but I am glad some people do 😁
At first I wasn't quite a "fan" of the channel, perhaps I got the wrong impression, but I noticed after watching a couple of video's I became addicted to them. You are probably one of the most humblest of persons. I must say, and you can see this as a tip perhaps - I was a fan of the "series" you did about tomatoes. I think this keeps people hooked and wanting to see more.
Wow, thanks for that comment. I often wonder what attracts people to my channel, and if they are interested for the start. It is good to know there are people out there who 'warm' to it.
I'm a big fan and honestly I'm continuously surprised that you don't have more followers. Possibly because you avoid catchy click bait-y titles and thumb nails, and instead focus on a fact driven, dispassionate discussion of your observations. Honestly your channel is what we need more of in this world and I have faith that in time your channel and name will come to rank with some of the big names of organic gardening/farming. Keep it up please.
Hey there! I am a bit surprised too, keep waiting for that increase to happen. I know the click bait titles work for drawing attention, but I don't think they work for sustaining interest, and getting people to grow a lot more food. But I need to think more about how to frame things so they are a bit more accessible and interesting to others. Thanks for your confidence in me!
@@REDGardens thumbs up emoji👍
I’ve got a lot of old seeds and I think I’ll just throw them all in this year to see what happens 👍🏼
I appreciate your ability to observe and assess what goes on in your garden. And how well you communicate the information!
Thanks for that comment, skills I am trying to develop!
I've been watching Red Gardens for about a year now and I keep coming back because the author clearly cares about the value of objectivity. He presents what he has learned in an honest way and seems to have no problem pointing out what he have have done wrong and leaves the reader to draw their own conclusions from his research. Clearly a scientifically minded individual which is such a breath of fresh air from the majority of others who claim to have all the answers, oversimplify to a fault or worst of all are just selling product disguised as advice. Bravo!!
Thank you for that encouraging comment! It is great to know that people really appreciate the way I approach all of this gardening stuff.
Bruce, you are the best! Thank you for presenting ideas which I may never have considered. Your work is so valuable to me and others as you present in an honest and generous manner!!!
Ah, thanks for that really encouraging comment!
I am glad you had some help this year. I think the most important part of planning to not being around is teaching what you have learned. Good luck this year.
Thanks, it has been a rewarding year in the way.
Thanks so much Bruce! I love how you approach things. I'd be lucky to have 1% of your skill set.
:)
Thank you for sharing this information! This is something we all should start doing ourselves within our own communities and neighborhoods. Getting back to basics, less reliance on outside factors. I know it’s a lot of work, but the result is so worth it! 😁
👍
I've been gardening all my life and pushing 70 now - (and yes age matters)! This channel has been so refreshing. There is not one video where I haven't learned something new, or haven't been inspired to try something outside my comfort zone. You are a continuous inspiration and very much more interesting than you think. I wish I could be another helpful neighbour (but Canada is a bit far)
Ah, Elizabeth, that is a lovely comment to read. Thank you.
I'm very proud to call myself a loyal supporter via Patreon since the beginning. I wouldnt know what I know in tackling issues in the gardens (for example did I have the same issue with dried-out compost this past year), so simply working along this strategy, learning and adapting is why I am still, and will be until the end, a Patreon.
Keep on Gardening, Bruce & Kris!
Thank you so much for being a Patron for so long!!!
I completely LOVE how you are experimenting with different methods of growing, it gives us an abundance of knowledge and a basis of how we can approach our own gardens.
Thanks! It really helps to know that people out there appreciate and get something out of my efforts!
It's has been great following along with you and the development of RED Gardens over the past five years. I imagine you got a significant surge in viewership as Covid home bound people turned to gardening, and I wouldn't be surprised if that source of surge has plateaued. I hope your great channel has contributed to keeping many of them as life-long gardeners. As always, thank you, Bruce, for all you do and share.
Yeah, it did get that initial surge, but basically plateaued since then. The thing about channels like this is I have no way of knowing about or tracking what really matters, as you identified, contributing to people becoming life-long gardeners. Thanks for watching and consistently offering valuable feedback!
There might have been a bump in viewers from Brexit as well. People starting up their own veg garden just in case the world ground to a halt in the UK.
I watched in 2021 and even moreso in 2020 the huge surge in first time gardeners. These were people that couldn't even identify when to harvest a zuchinni. I know the seed shortage of 2020 was very real and across many of the biggest suppliers. I also seen many of these influxes of new people interested in foraging and medicinal herbs as well. I suppose ultimately it has been more people interested in self sufficiency and less reliance on the supply chain. This has also been seen in people trying to escape into more rural areas where they can do just that.
@@TNBushcrafter Yeah, there was definitely a significant shift, with a lot of people taking things like food growing more seriously. Many of them seemed to have faded away, but there is definitely more going on now.
@@REDGardens yeah for sure. Forgot to mention the canning, dehydrating, and food preservation groups as well. We live on a farm out in the woods and all that is just a way of life. We've done all of it for generations.
Love hearing your successes and failures. We learn a lot from you. Keep it up!
:)
Hi Bruce I love your channel and always learn a lot. You have inspired me to carry on and even to carry out experiments of my own - thank you very much 👍
Thanks, as always, you for your helpful and thoughtful words.
:)
Beautiful greenhouse and useful information. Thank you!
What an incredibly interesting and helpful video. SOOOO much info here, showing what goes right and how things can go wrong. Way more helpful than focusing on only what worked. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️
Here from the start - still here - still interested.
Always fascinating
Thanks for continuing to watch, through all those videos!
I always appreciate your very helpful tips and this end of the year--what I learned one is a favorite. I've gardened for over 30 years, and I am STILL learning new things all the time. One of the great joys of gardening is that you can always improve. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. It is most appreciated!
I look forward to your videos as I like a little experimentation and enjoy the results. Looking forward to the 2022 garden videos 👍 thanks!
So cool to know that people look forward to my videos, thanks!
You host one of the most consistently useful and informative channels I visit. Your focus on learning through sharing experiments is very impressive. Please keep it up and I am sure growth will follow in the future. All the best.
Thanks Norman, and thank you for consistently watching and commenting!
Super grateful for your videos, I find the scientific way you approach a lot of your gardening helpful for me who also loves to keep records and numbers to see how my garden is going and progressing so that I can make changes each year to try and improve. Thankyou!
It is so good to know that people find these videos helpful, thanks!
We're new to gardening last year and were lucky enough to come across your channel. I've learned from you and your community through reading the comments. There is a collective wealth of knowledge here.
Cheers from Victoria Canada
Btw We're trying your tomatoe technique this year 🌱🌱🌱
Glad you found my channel, and found it useful! Hope you have great tomatoes this year, over there in Victoria!
You have a great channel. Probably the best there is. I understand you as my channel went thru the same issue. I decided to eliminate adds during the videos and saw a positive change in subscribers and average video duration. Keep up, please. This is a great channel.
Yes. I unsubscribe from channels with mid-roll ads - no matter how good the channel or how much I like the presenters and admire their work. I try to engage first but, often, giving any kind of gently critical feedback is met with indignant pushback.
Thanks! And thank you for the insight about mid-roll ads, which I have always avoided.
@@AtheistEve Yeah, I don't like mid-roll ads either!
@@REDGardens Unfortunately, because of RUclips’s policy on ads, I took down my videos (not that there were many of them). I don’t want any ads on my channel, but RUclips shoves them on anywhere it wants now, even if a channel is not monetized by the channel owner. I don’t know if it places ads on videos marked private.
good news i turn off so many yt vids now because of adds, hope others do as you do regards.....
Love the lessons learned video. I wish more people would share their lessons learned. Keep up the good work.
👍
I love your content, keep up the great work. I know a lot of people like me who are still wanting to get started with gardening but are a little unsure where and how to start. A back to basics series this spring might be helpful. You know laying out a garden plot, starting seeds, how to transplant, watering, weeding, pruning, and so on. An everything around the garden for those of us who know nothing, or less than nothing.
Your videos continue to inspire! I can associate with most of these points. It's a fascinating introspection to the entire process of gardens, at every level.
Best channel i ever watched; worth waiting to hear from you when you have something to say. Take the time you need, no-one has escaped the realities of the current state of things.
Just do what you do best; we'll be here.
Ah, thanks. Thank you for that supportive message, it helps.
Hello, thank you for sharing all your knowledge in this thoughtful video! I loved hearing your observations and good advice and learned a lot! Your channel just got recommended to me today (lucky me~), looking forward to more! Happy gardening :)
Thanks, glad you found my channel!
Having an extra pair of hands to help is a God send! 2 people helped me with prep and winter clean up yesterday and we got done in 5 hours what would have taken me days! What a blessing!!!
it can really help, especially with big tasks.
I am assuming due to the algorithm your videos have not popped up in my recommended/feed for a long time for me… im not sure what made THIS video pop up but I watched the entire thing and it was incredibly thought provoking and enjoyable. Thankfully I now have a binge session to look forward to. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into documenting your discoveries and assisting those who are less experienced🙏
Thanks! And hope you enjoy the other videos!
First time on your channel and I loved the video concept, and the work you've been putting in. Subscribed and looking forward to watching and learning more from you :) I've been growing some of my food in my small backyard but there's still so much to learn. Hoping to soon buy a bigger lot where I can keep some animals too.
Hurrah! It's a brilliant learning synposis. - - I have no idea why the channel views have plateaued. It's the best horticultural channel I have found, in years of searching. Some people want content that affirms their biases and political learnings. Most people, I think, love polemic, and easy answers, not genuine learning, an X-ism or an anti-Y-ology; trumpets, sabres and flags.
Thanks! I think that 'easy answer' thing is a big part of it, that there is a limited pool of people who are interested in this type of channel. But I guess the purpose of this channel is to encourage more people into that group!
@@REDGardens I have messaged you a few time via Patreon. Could you check?
@@FireflyOnTheMoon Yeah, apologies again for not replying to your Patreon messages. I really need to get better at keeping an eye on that side of things!
Big thanks to you for sharing your gardens, tips&tricks, experiments and so much more with us 🌻
:)
You have no idea how much this videos common sense-types of information Actually HELPED IMMENSELY!!
Thank you so very much for providing this video as it gave at least me personally a good starting pointers to keep in mind for the future to keep in mind as I hopefully & finally will be able to eventually achieve!!

Man, your work is one of the best and Iam so thankful for finding your channel years ago.
Love your eloquence, the factual straight to the point approach,
the profound insights and detailed documentation.
I have and will watch every video with great appreciation no matter how long the time in between.
If more videos means diluted content or filler topics, please don`t.
That is one of the main reasons I unsubscribe from channels every time it happens.
Good content is very much like growing plants... you can not pull them to make them grow faster.
Wonder if ilfe sent you the helping hand to understand the topic of teaching more deeply
(at wich you are exceptionally good at already imo) to prepare for the book
that I have no doubt you will write one of these days.
I can not wait to lay hands of one of the first printings.
Very heartfelt greetings from Hungary.
Hi, new subscriber from the Netherlands, interesting vid thanks.
I've used a drip watering system in my greenhouse, I think that consistent slow amount of water helps to avoid split tomatoes, at least I didn't have any in the 2 years I've been growing 💚 good luck!
Hello there in Netherlands! I have shifted to drip system as well, though I think I leave it on too long each cycle, which is causing some issues.
Well done Bruce , your work is an inspiration.
I’ve followed you since the beginning and learned such a lot.
I’m glad to see that you are getting help from Chris.
Thank you! And thanks for watching my videos for all these seasons.
Very informative and to the point. I enjoyed the content and look forward to viewing more... a lot more! Thank you.
Epigenetics is how your garlic learns. It’s an amazingly adaptive mechanism.
Amazing stuff indeed!
There's always something new to learn! Thanks for your work, I've been watching I believe since 2019 and I'm still enjoying your videos!
Excellent! Thanks!
So good to see your video on what you learned 2021. I always look forward to what you have to say which can help us even out here in the desert. Sending all good wishes for 2022.
Thank you! I find it so fascinating that people in very different climates get stuff out of my videos.
Just found your videos today, and they are much appreciated! Keep up the Good Work :)
Each and every one of your videos is an absolute treat. I know it will always be something thoughtful, innovative and different. I have a feeling that those who started gardening with oodles of enthusiasm have now plateaued off of gardening themselves, when going back to work, or getting back to life as they knew it. This includes the boring task of supermarket queues, rather than not being interested in what you do and say. I know which I'd rather do :D. What is a supermarket anyway?
Ah, thanks! I think you are probably right about the enthusiasm trailing off, and people getting busy. We need to get more and more people going more of their own food, but I guess we need to accept the ebb and flow of interest.
@@REDGardens Yes we most certainly do. I hope when spring comes that people at least grow basics, such as salad crops and potatoes. Lots of things are going to be massively expensive, not just food. So I hope this pushes more people to grow. The UK is underfunded as far as allotment space goes, and I can only hope that farmers can see the benefits of letting out land for this purpose. Fertilizer for farmers has quadrupled in price at least, not to mention feed prices; plus there are crop disasters abroad such as tomatoes with droughts and other problems. I'm hoping the upward swing of prices will encourage more to grow food if they have the space.
Your work is inspiring by the way 👍
Thanks!
I love the footage of your garden and the highlights of your learning. Thank you!
😀
This was a really great update on the things you learned, and made me consider some ideas I hadn't had before!
😀
I appreciate your videos very much. Keep them coming. Anything you have learned in your gardening Journey helps me tremendously. Thank you and we need you don’t tire out my friend.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you for organizing your thoughts. I will find this extremely helpful as I kick off my new gardens soon. Your message is one I understand well
Glad it was helpful! And thanks for watching!
Hello Bruce,
I really enjoyed watching this clip and I am grateful for you sharing your knowledge. With great Thanks, Aimee
Thank you , glad you liked it!
Your work is great, informative, and honest. Thank you from LA, Calif.
Thanks! Hello there in LA, in such a different climate/context!
Every one of these lessons is applicable to so much beyond the garden without much translation. Thanks for the deep thoughts and inspiration as always.
Thanks for that. I definitely take a lot of lessons with me from the gardens into the other areas of my life!
Thank you for the update
What an incredible video!! We love what you do and the detail in which you share your new knowledge!
😀 thanks!
Ok this video just came up on my feed today, so its a much watched, liked and well commented video that are put at the "must watch" list. Great content. Very simple, but good ideas (what every gardener needs). Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!

What a great report! You always get my creative juices flowing. Thanks for your work and your thoughts.
Awesome!
I love every one of your videos Bruce, keep em coming :) Those clips been using for years, they are and so easy to attach.
Thanks. Yeah, those clips are great.
Love the information that you are sharing and hope to implement some of the techniques this season.
Cheers!

I like how considerate you are. Keep going. We watch
🙂
incredible channel! thank you for sharing your passion
After using your carrot planting techniques I've found great success in growing big beautiful carrots. Love everything your doing . I use different techniques depending on the crops I'm growing based on your experiences. Thanks! I love burgundy bush beans. I've done comparisons on different varieties of bush beans and they are my favorite thus far. My kids call them magic beans because they change color when cooked. I also love your homemade weeding tool. I even made one I can use while standing up.
Thank you very much for sharing your beautiful gardens. You are an amazing artist who truly love what he does. Thank you for sharing.
That is a lovely thing to say, thank you.
Have been following a number of years and I still get excited when I see a notification saying you have uploaded a new video. Your videos give amazing food for thought and are well developed and presented
Ah, thanks! Knowing there is a bit of excitement out there helps me to keep going!
From one nerdy gardener to another, well done, sir! I loved hearing about what you learned! So inspiring!! Best of luck in 2022!!
Thanks so much!
Every year I plan and set goals for the garden. This is a good reminder that wrapping up the year by noting the lessons learned is important too.
It has become an important thing for me, which I try to do at the beginning of each year.
This channel is a gem! The algorithm brought me to you a few days back and i'm so grateful for that.
I don't have a garden right now, just growing some plants in my living room.
So now is the time to soak up many informations for the future where i have my own (big) garden and your channel is perfect for this!
Thank You for doing this and please keep at it!
Thank you. Really glad you found my channel and are getting a lot out of my efforts!
Thank you for your knowlegable, experienced, and humble approach. I so appreciate it and you. Thanks.
So nice of you
Hello Red Gardens! I've just subscribed to your channel! Something that I have found extremely useful last year - I run a 30 bed kitchen garden for a client, we set it up over 18 months and were growing and building at the same time last year. We have a 30 ft tunnel in which we grew tomatoes, melons, peppers, aubergines, and grow salads during the winter. I grew all our Augbergines from seed, but bought just one different variety in - it was the only one that got mould on it, but what stopped that dead in it's tracks was a spray of Colloidal Silver. This is fabulous diulted, as it kills the nasties, bolsters the plants and makes for healthy young plants. I dilute 20ppm by 50% and have a spray bottle handy.
Thanks for the tip.
Wow! thank you for sharing your experience!!!!
🙂
Thank you for your contribution to evidence based gardening, something more sorely needed in popular gardening. Much Love ❤
🙂
Definitely a nice recap. Thanks Bruce. Been watching your stuff for only 2 years, but it's been valuable for sure. I have to massively adapt things to my own climate and availability, but the way you present it makes this easy. Many channels are very country-centric when they talk about plants and tools and currencies, but you are quite open and honest about things. Keep it up, and thanks for helping me too, get in front of a camera (I remember your video about that too). Never back down!
Thanks for the feedback. Good to know that people are able to adapt what I talk about to their own different context and climate. That is what I aim for. I had a quick look at your channel, and definitely a very different context!!
This is my first time watching your video. It is very helpful and I really love it. Thank you for making such a great learning video. :)
I just watch your video for the first time and I have to confess that I learned a lot.
Thank you.
I have been planting a vegetable garden, for a great while. and up to now thought I was an expert,
but now I know that I am not.
I like the out.lines of your video making it easier to follow.
Thank you again
Eduardo
Thank you for the great comment! Glad you found my channel!
Thank you for you videos, you'd become my favorite garden channel since OYR stopped posting 2-3 years ago
Wow, thanks! It is a shame OYR stopped.
Thank you for sharing your experiences
👍
I learned a great trick!
I used alfalfa pellets meant for horses as a side dressing fertilizer for everything and it all thrived!!
I'm trying it this year.
Thanks for sharing your tip! I will try it.
That sounds like a good source of fertility. It seems that anything we can feed to horses, or other livestock, can be used for fertilising our plants.
Thank you for sharing your observations & knowledge.
You are welcome!
I think we learn every year and no one is like the other! Please more? Thank you very much!!! Best greetings from Austria.
😀
Thank you for this thoughtful reflection on lessons learned in your garden. Your efforts were well worth the stop, and got my brain thinking about a few of my own lessons from the past year, and how some of what you shared can be applied to enhance my own efforts to bring joy to my community. 🙏
🙂
I just saw your channel today, watched this video and subscribed before video was over. I'm looking forward to binge watching everything over the next short time period. That makes me happy. 😁
Yay! Thank you! 😀
This is a great video!! You displayed what you learnt that year greatly!
Thanks!
Another great year ! Yup the algorythms were not ’pushing’ your videos froward to me this year. I’ll put the Bell on.
Thanks!
Excellent as always Bruce.......great video
Thanks Jim!
2nd video of yours I’ve watched. You got a new sub; thank you for this.
