Notice on all the home run trots, no stylin' and profilin'. A different class of players. Class being the key word. I'm glad I had the chance to see all of those greats.
Just watched George Foster hit a home run and almost catch the guy on 1st, that's how fast he rounded the bases.
I remember watching this game when I was 11 years old. Jackson's home run was quite memorable. Thanks for putting this out there.
It really was. I had heard about this home run and glad it was part of this episode. It's great to hear Gowdy talk about Hank's chase of the home run record. Thanks for tuning in Kevin and leaving your comment!
Me too, I saw this when I was 9 years old. I remember most of it too....
@@dollarjilt1 Those memories were terrific. I also saw the 1969 Mets win and that was great too!
Thanks for the memories. Such great players we grew up with. Baseball was baseball then. Just professional & no showboating & stupid uniforms.
Thanks Mike!
This may be the greatest All-Star Game ever played. Six future Cooperstown enshrinees hit HR with four of them finding a Hall Of Famer on base (Stargell, Aparicio, Carew & Kaline). Ten different immortals scored the 10 runs.
26 individuals who would be inducted were there, including 21 players, both managers (Weaver & Anderson), another manager who served as a coach (Alston), a player who would enter the Hall as a manager (Torre) and an umpire (Doug Harvey). Amazing !!! ⚾
You hit it out of the park Luis! Excuse the pun lol. Incredible collection of professional baseballers.
@@BIU2330 Yeah 😂, Thanks, loved the intended pun ⚾. I was 12 at home in Puerto Rico when I saw this game via satellite, my first ASG live (we had a Super 8 silent movie of the previous year's contest, with Yaz getting 4 hits and Rose barreling into Fosse), and when those 6 players homered I felt history on the making right away. Jackson had played winter ball here, with my Cangrejeros managed by Frank Robinson and Clemente was the skipper of the Senadores. Bench was a fan favorite in my street, Killebrew was one of the greatest power hitters in the AL and Aaron was pursuing The Babe. What a game ! Losing Roberto the following year only made this game even more special. Bendiciones desde San Juan 🇵🇷
I was at this game, albeit only 11 years old. Sat in the left field seats. What a fantastic game this was! Loved the original Tiger Stadium.
Wow! Any stories you can share? Any player interactions?
I met Al Kaline the following year when our Little League named our primary field after him (Kaline Field Number 6). Nicest man you could ever meet. He loved baseball, took the time to talk with us kids without hesitation. He certainly appeared to be thoroughly enjoying himself. So glad he was a shoo-in to the Hall of Fame. @@BIU2330
So was i ,,12 at time ,any chance this is Bob that was Golightly teach ....
Met one of my Cubs heroes playing here, Don Kessinger at a minor league game outside of Chicago along with Jody Davis. They both signed our son's gloves, wish I had kept them, but the boys weren't really interested. Met Reggie at a local Pacific Beach bar when he was calling the WS between the Padres and Tigers. I was talking to him and a local about 5 minutes before I realized who he was. He didn't have his glasses on and wore his t-shirt inside out. Very down to earth, just chilling out like another local. Great memories here. Thanks for posting this.
Great story about Reggie! Appreciate the commentmake sure to sub!
@@BIU2330 You got it 👍
I was at this game.. 12 years old. I think I still have the program somewhere
Wow! You have to look for that BP. How great would it be to read about the game/players at that point in time? Any specific memories from the game? Thanks for letting us know.
That's awesome..those huge blasts are so much better in person.
The Reggie Jackson home run...
Probably the most famous All-Star home run ever!!
So true!
Johnny Calison's walk-off Homer in '64 I believe, is another famous one.
1941 ted williams hrs won.the all star game.
1941all star game, ted williams hit a walkout hr
On the original telecast, the Jackson Dinger was panned upward by a camera view that showed the ball smashing a light on the light tower with electrical Sparks flying about.
Did not know that, thanks for sharing.
I remember watching it but cannot recall seeing any electrical sparks. Is there video evidence of that anywhere? I just remember them talking about the "light transformer".
I think you dreamed that, but I don't blame you 😄, I was 12 and wished the telecast had a lot of cameras available then, the same way they do today. The only one tracking the Home Run did a poor job, focusing on the fans seated at the upper deck and not following the ball, I suppose the cameraman wasn't expecting such a blast (no one was). ⚾
I was watching the game with a buddy, and when Jackson hit that one we both jumped and went OHH!! OHH!! and nearly spilled our beers lol.
Having grown up in the Detroit area, I remember this game well. This was the only All-Star Game won by the American League between 1962 and 1983 and I was so happy it happened in Detroit. The leagues had more stability and identity in those days. Most of the '71 NL All-Stars had never played in Tiger Stadium before. In today's game, several of one year's NL All-Stars will be on the next year's AL team and vice versa.
Yeah, as an Orioles/AL fan, was frustrating losing this game many a time.,
I read somewhere that when Reggie was chosen to replace the injured Tony Oliva in the ASG, his teammate and captain Sal Bando advised him 'Don't embarrass us by striking out'. After two strikes you can see Reggie choked up about an inch because he was determined to make contact and keep from being struck out, still hearing Bando's words on his head.
Loved those As teams
Wow! Thanks for sharing this! I was only 1 when this game happened but I love watching them hit!
Thanks for watching and commenting Todd! This was a fun one to put together. The players bring back so many memories. Appreciate the support.
Great upload
Thanks Fortynights! I appreciate the view and comment.
I loved Tiger stadium back when it was all green. I went to a game in September that year and you could still see the stars on the outfield grass
The baserunners before those home runs were all future Hall of Famers: Stargell, Aparicio, Carew, and Kaline.
Good call Paul!
I was 10 watching Reggie hit that bomb on our B/W tv with aluminum foil on the rabbit ears.
Damn.....rabbit ears...they worked good! lol
Has to be a record for the amount of Hall of Famers
Not a bad group of players there.
Those line ups were stacked!! So so many great names. We were so fortunate to have seen them play!
Curt Gowdy. Tony Kubek. #thehighestquality
Loved Gowdy and Kubek puts me right back in that era.
great seening this old footage,.... when players were players,... what would most of these guys cost salary wise today????? makes you think, they are way better than todays players
Reggie tags the generator box!
Vida Blue. He needed the money!
Those HOFs put on a clinic! Great game!
They sure did!
@@BIU2330 i was 5 and saw johnny bench constantly after this but love revisiting these all time greats being all time greats. thank you.
@@marcyfan-tz4wj My first game ever was a Reds/Mets game in the 70s with the Big Red Machine invading Shea Stadium. What a team, what a player Bench was.
@@BIU2330 well, your team had tom seaver (until they dumbly traded him to the reds). the fascinating thing about the 71 all-star game is the reds almost got vida blue at the same time they got seaver. of course the reds traded frank robinson to baltimore so...
That hit the transformer off there! There’s no transformer on a roof. Ridiculous.
6 HOFers homered thats great and reggies 3 inning blast was something else
Classic ASG.
Sad that Vida Blue didn't fulfill his awesome promise.
